With this vehicle, rails which show
signs of wear, are given new profiles, in order to ensure optimum
rol­ling performance. This is a neces­
sity especially on high-speed routes. Grinding operations are carried
out 7 days a week, in three shifts.

during grinding operation, when the
traction engine needs to provide
highly accurate constant speeds
with maximum tractive power.

This ensures the high total transmission ratios of 23.898, incorporating the ratio of the summing
gearbox (5.905) and that of the final
drives (4.047). For transfer trips,
the turbo transmission is in service,
while the summing gearbox is decoupled between output shaft and gre­
ater wheel, as a result of which the
summing gearbox and especially the
hydrodynamic circuit are protected.
The L 520 rzU2 turbo transmission type is a two-speed transmission with hydrodynamic torque
converters. In the converter filled
with ope­rating fluid the power is
transmitted between impeller and
turbine wheel by the inertia forces
of the fluid. Speed shifts take place
automatically without interruption in
tractive effort, smoothly and without
wear, by filling and draining the fluid
circuits.
The driving direction is reversed at
standstill by means of an integrated
reversing mechanism. Braking is
hydrodynamic by means of an inte­
grated wear-free retarder.
