When Molly Wizenberg married Brandon Pettit, he was a trained composer with a handful of offbeat interest: espresso machines, wooden boats, violin-building, and ice cream making. So when Brandon decided to open a pizza restaurant, Molly was supportive not because she wanted him to do it, but because the idea was far-fetched that she didn't think he would. Before she knew it, he’d signed a lease on a space. The restaurant, Delancey, was going to be a reality, and all of Molly’s assumptions about her marriage were about change. Together they built Delancey: gutting and renovating the space on a cobbled together budget, developing a menu, hiring staff, and passing inspections. Delancey became a success, and Molly tried to convince herself that she was happy in their new life until in the heat and pressure of the restaurant kitchen she realized that she hadn't been honest with herself or Brandon. If you are interested in joining or for more information, please call the West End Branch at 337-923-6205. BERWICK BRANCH ADULT BOOK CLUB The Berwick Branch Library Book Club for Adults will meet on Thursday, August 18th at 6:00 p.m. to discuss the book “The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend” by Katarina Bivald. Broken Wheel, Iowa, has never seen anyone like Sara, who traveled all the way from Sweden just to meet her book-loving pen pal, Amy. When she arrives, however, she finds Amy’s funeral guest just leaving. The residents of Broken Wheel are happy to look after their bewildered visitorthere’s not much else to do in a dying small town that’s almost beyond repair. You certainly wouldn't open a bookstore. And definitely not with the tourist in charge. You’d need a vacant storefront (Main Street is full of them), books (Amy’s house is full of them), and… customers. The bookstore might be a little quirky. Then again, so is Sara. But Broken Wheel’s own story might be more eccentric and surprising that she thought. A heartwarming reminder of why we are booklovers, this is a sweet, smart story about how books find us, change us, and connect us. If you are interested in joining or for more information, please call the Berwick Branch Library at 985-385-2943. Lagniappe August 2016 PATTERSON BRANCH ADULT BOOK CLUB The Patterson Branch Library Book Club will meet on Thursday, August 18th at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the book “Blessed Child” by Ted Dekker. The young orphaned boy was abandoned and raised in an Ethiopian monastery. He has never seen outside its walls at least, not the way most people see. Now he must flee these walls or die. When relief expert Jason Marker agrees to take Caleb from the monastery, he unwittingly opens humanity’s doors to an incredible journey filled with intrigue and peril. Together with Leiah, the French Canadian nurse who escapes to America with them, Jason discovers Caleb’s stunning power. But so do the boy’s enemies, who will stop at nothing to destroy him. Jason and Leiah fight for the boy’s survival while the world erupts into debate over the source of the boy’s power. We are sorry to announce that we are now at our capacity for our Adult Book Club. CENTERVILLE BRANCH ADULT BOOK CLUB The Centerville Branch Library Book Club for Adults will meet on Wednesday, August 24th at 10:30 a.m. to discuss the book “The Silent Sister” by Diane Chamberlain. Riley MacPherson has spent her entire life believing that her older sister Lisa committed suicide as a teenager. It was a belief that helped shape her own childhood and that of her brother. It shaped her view of her family and their dynamics. It influenced her entire life. Now, more than twenty years later, her father has passed away and she’s in New Bern, North Carolina, cleaning out his house when she finds evidence that what she has always believed is not the truth. Lisa is alive. Alive and living under a new identity. But why, exactly, was she on the run all those years ago? What secrets are being kept now, and what will happen if those secrets are revealed? As Riley works to uncover the truth, her discoveries will put into question everything she thought she knew about her family. Riley must decide what the past means for her present, and what she will do with her newfound reality. Told with Diane Chamberlain’s powerful prose and illumination into the human heart and soul, The Silent Sister is an evocative novel of love, loss, and the bonds among siblings. If you are interested in joining or for more information, please call the Centerville Branch Library at 337-836-1717. Page 5 ADULT PROGRAMS BAYOU VISTA BRANCH COLORING FOR ADULTS Coloring is an activity that we tend to associate with children. As we grow older, we put aside our crayons and colored pencils in favor of more respectable writing utensils like pens and highlighters. However, it turns out coloring can be beneficial for adults — namely for its de-stressing power. The practice generates wellness, quietness and also stimulates brain areas related to motor skills, the senses and creativity. In fact, publishers have lately been launching coloring books specifically for adults. The trend is alive and well in countries in Europe and North America. Come join us on August 26th at 10:00 a.m. for some coloring fun! Coloring pages from books designed especially for adults as well as colored pencils, crayons and refreshments will be provided. For more information please call 985-399-9866. PATTERSON BRANCH PAINTING WITH CAROLINE Local artist, Caroline Simoneaux, will hold a painting program at the Patterson Branch Library on August 25th at 6:00 p.m. Each participant will paint a Fleur De Lis, but each individual’s artwork will be unique and embody the personality of the artist. This program is open to adults only. Registration is required and participation is limited to only 10. For more information or to register, call the library at 985-395-2777. WEST END BRANCH NUTRITION PROGRAM Come join us on Tuesday, August 30th at 6:00 p.m. at the West End Branch to learn about nutrition with registered dietitian, Becky Smith. This free program allows parents the opportunity to share books every day with their child. The goal is to read 1000 books before your child starts kindergarten. Reading to or with your child daily helps them develop the pre-reading skills necessary for them to be successful readers in kindergarten. Families with babies and children not yet enrolled in kindergarten are invited to come to the library and register their children. Upon registration you will receive a reading packet complete with program information, reading logs, bookmark, and incentives for the start of a fun reading journey.
