Tufts Medical Center is uniquely located in the heart of Boston’s Chinatown, a culturally,

We have enjoyed longstanding partnerships with a wide variety of community-based

of our neighbors in the Asian community, including the Asian Health Initiative, Asian
Pediatric and Adolescent Clinical Services, , and the Kidney and Blood Pressure Center.
We also have established newer programs in the past decade, including the Asthma
Prevention and Management Initiative, See, Test & Treat (an annual women’s health
screening), OB/GYN Asian Access Clinic, and Asian-Pacific Liver Wellness Program.

Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children are well equipped to meet the basic
and complex medical needs of the Asian community, from newborns to teens, young adults,
mothers-to-be, adults and seniors.

The adult primary care practice, anchored by bilingual, Cantonese-speaking physicians
Myron Siu, MD and Elaine Choi, MD, now has increased capacity for new patients with
the recent addition of bilingual, Mandarin-speaking primary care providers Wei Wang,
MD, Jenny Gao, MD and Yueling Guo Moran, MD. Dr. Wang and Dr. Gao are accepting new
patients for appointments in our Boston primary care clinic. Dr. Moran is accepting new
patients for appointments in our Quincy clinic, located within walking distance of the
Quincy Adams T Station stop on the red line.

Adult experts in other medical sub-specialties include Rheumatologist Janeth Yinh,
MD, who speaks Spanish and Cantonese and Ophthalmologist Susan Liang, MD, who is
fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin. Dr. Liang specializes in glaucoma, cataracts and other
diseases of the eye, and has a special interest in preventive eye care for seniors in the
Asian community.
Finally, the Asian Clinical Services Program, led by Sue Chin Ponte, CPNP, MEd and
Haiyun Gong, MD, provides culturally and linguistically appropriate primary care to the
Asian community’s kids, youth and young adults. They have a strong network of pediatric
specialists at Floating Hospital for Children to whom they refer patients to for more
complex health care needs. Liwen Tang, MD, a pediatric cardiologist fluent in Mandarin and
Cantonese, Ju Tang, MD, PhD, a pediatric neurologist who speaks Mandarin and Vicki Chen,
MD, a pediatric Ophthalmologist who speaks Mandarin are all excited to be a part of the
Floating Hospital team and have the opportunity to serve the Asian community.

ASIAN GENERAL PEDIATRIC AND
ADOLESCENT HEALTH SERVICES
This pediatric and adolescent clinical program was established in 1997 to provide pediatric
care that is culturally and linguistically appropriate to the Asian patients of the Floating
Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. Sue Chin Ponte, CPNP, MEd, oversees the
program. She has over 30 years of experience in working with the Greater Boston
Asian community.
The clinic provides a full range of primary care services, from routine visits and immunizations
to acute urgent care and referral assistance. Clinicians are very accessible and ready to help
their patients, with the clinic providing 24-hour emergency on-call service for their patients.
The clinic works closely with numerous specialty clinics within Tufts Medical Center,
including: The Center for Children with Special Needs, a program that provides health
resources for children diagnosed with autism, pervasive developmental delay or ADD/
ADHD, for whom they assess and evaluate the children for these issues; an asthma clinic;
and a dental clinic that includes dental care for both babies and school-aged children. Staff
also provides consultation and expertise to several Chinatown community-based child care
providers and organizations.
The team consists of bilingual and multilingual clinicians and staff, who blend trusted and
traditional Asian therapies and health beliefs and practices with complementary Western
treatment protocols. This balanced approach respects Asian cultural beliefs, and meets the
needs of patients and families. Clinicians and staff speak English, Cantonese, Mandarin,
Toishanese, Taiwanese, and Fujianese.
Sue Chin Ponte, GNP, and pediatrician Haiyun Gong, MD, are both available to see patients.
Combined they see over 2,700 patients, for approximately 8,000 patient visits in any
given year.

The Division of Gastroenterology at Tufts Medical Center provides diagnosis and
treatment of both common and rare gastrointestinal, biliary, and pancreatic disorders.
Patients receive care from gastroenterologists who are specially trained in advanced
therapeutic endoscopy. They work with a multidisciplinary care team, including GI
procedure nurses, interventional radiologists, gastrointestinal surgeons, oncologists,
pathologists, and radiology technicians.

Recent advances in endoscopic technology have equipped our team with the tools and
resources to provide extraordinary care with greater efficiency, safety and precision.
Endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure used to examine a person’s digestive tract. Your
doctor can view pictures of your digestive tract on a color TV monitor by using an
endoscope, a flexible tube with a light and a camera attached to it. There are many
types of endoscopy, each of which is designed to look at a certain part of the intestines,
bile ducts, pancreas, liver, and/or other surrounding organs. Endoscopy is one of many
therapeutic interventions that doesn’t require a single incision, and can help avoid the
need for more invasive surgeries and procedures.
The Therapeutic Endoscopy Center at Tufts Medical Center offers many endoscopic
procedures including:

The Asian-Pacific Liver Wellness Program, which has dedicated clinical and frontline staff
and Asian language interpreters and is committed to offering comprehensive evaluation for
patients with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and other liver problems and providing the most up to
date treatments for all liver diseases.

HBV is a silent killer among Asians and Pacific Islanders: In the United States, HBV is 20
times more common among Asians than non-Asians. Approximately one in every 10 Asian
Americans is living with chronic HBV, and about two-thirds of them are unaware of their
condition due to lack of symptoms during the early stages of the disease. According to the
Asian Liver Center at Stanford University School of Medicine, without appropriate monitoring
or treatment, approximately one in four Asian Americans with chronic HBV will die from liver
failure or liver cancer.
Globally, HBV is the most common underlying cause of liver cancer and is the second-most
common cause of cancer in the world, after only tobacco. Most HBV infections among
Asians are acquired perinatally during birth or early in childhood, due to blood-to-blood
transmission. HBV infections among Asians are not generally associated with alcohol,
sexual activity or illicit drugs, though alcohol consumption after HBV infection may
worsen the condition.
All Asians living in the United States should be tested for HBV. It is an easily preventable
infection with an effective vaccination. Getting screened, especially at a younger age, lowers
the risk of developing complications of chronic HBV. Early detection and regular monitoring
often leads to earlier intervention and treatment, which may prevent complications. Without
treatment, many who have HBV may not develop symptoms until more serious or irreversible
liver damage (cirrhosis) and liver cancer have occurred. If you do not already have HBV, it is
still important to receive the HBV vaccinations from your physician to greatly reduce the risk
of future infection. You will need three shots to be fully protected.

Kidney and Blood Pressure Center
In the United States, kidney disease occurs more frequently in racial minority groups than
in the general population. Asian Americans are twice as likely to develop kidney failure
as Caucasian Americans. Diabetes, which increases the risk for kidney disease and is the
leading cause of kidney failure, is a growing problem in the Asian population. Other risks for
chronic kidney disease include high blood pressure, heart or blood vessel problems, family
history of chronic kidney disease or being over 65 years old.

of the complications of chronic kidney disease can be prevented, including the progression to
kidney failure and the development of heart disease,” according to Andrew Levey, MD, Chief
of the Division of Nephrology at Tufts Medical Center. “People who are in a high-risk group
should ask their doctor to perform these three tests: a blood pressure check; a blood test
to estimate glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which measures kidney function; and a urine
dipstick test for protein in the urine.”
The Kidney and Blood Pressure Center at Tufts Medical Center serves a population that
is more than 50% Asian, and interpreters are available for all clinic visits. The staff of
the Kidney and Blood Pressure Center participates in many outreach events in Asian
communities to screen for high blood pressure and identify people at risk for developing
kidney disease.
Klemens Meyer, MD, one of our kidney specialists, has provided educational programs about
high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease to the Asian community. Dr. Meyer is the
Medical Director of the Dialysis Clinic, Inc (DCI) dialysis unit, which serves members of the
Asian population who need kidney dialysis.
The Kidney and Blood Pressure Center and the Dialysis Clinic are located at 35 Kneeland

New Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery James Yoo, MD launched the Colorectal
Cancer Center at Tufts Medical Center in March 2014. The multidisciplinary program is
designed to enhance the patient’s experience in addition to providing top-notch clinical and
surgical care. Lilian Chen, Colon and Rectal Surgeon, is also a member of the department.
Dr. Chen speaks Mandarin and Cantonese.

Colorectal cancers develop when single cells begin to lose their ability to control their
growth and usually begin to form polyps before becoming true cancers. While some forms of
colorectal cancer develop due to this overgrowth, others tend to be hereditary.

The Asthma Prevention and Management Initiative (APMI) was established in 2006 to
reduce health disparities by improving asthma care through education and environmental
management and decreasing urgent clinic and Emergency Room visits for asthma-related
problems. APMI provides asthma self-management education in the clinics and local schools;
home-based environmental assessments and interventions; and bilingual workshops to local
community agencies and parent groups. APMI aims to improve the quality of life for children
with asthma and their families who live, work, or attend school in the Chinatown community
and the surrounding Boston neighborhoods. Bilingual and culturally competent staffs
facilitate effective communication with patients and families who speak English,
Cantonese and Mandarin.

It is APMI‘s goal to identify, serve, educate and collaborate with our partners, to reduce or
eliminate environmental asthma triggers. A major component of APMI is to conduct home
visits to asthmatics who have difficulty controlling their asthma. APMI staff provide asthma
control packets and supplies, which include a bilingual DVD, to help caregivers and patients
learn about the dynamics of asthma and understand the impact of asthma triggers.
APMI has built effective collaborations with organizations and groups working to improve the
quality of life of asthmatic children and their families, particularly those who live in subsidized
housing and are not native English speakers. At the request of community members, APMI
also offers workshops and classes on other health topics — including allergies, medication
administration, stress management, growth and development, ADHD and others — that are
common in vulnerable populations. APMI’s educational programs for parents and community
members are led by Tufts Medical Center health care providers who are experts in their
respective fields.

ASIAN LUNG CLINIC
Tufts Medical Center provides interpretation services, at no cost to the patient, in more
than 70 languages to facilitate healthcare access for non-English speaking patients and to
communicate with their physicians, nurses, social workers, make a medical appointment,
and more. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for in-person or phone
interpreting.
The Asian Lung Clinic at Tufts Medical Center is a specialized pulmonary clinic that provides
comprehensive services for patients of Asian descent. The clinic is the only one of its kind in
Boston. What truly sets the Asian Lung Clinic apart from other general lung clinics in Boston
is that our staff is dedicated to providing culturally-sensitive and expert care.
On-site, Asian language capacity is available in several Chinese dialects (including
Cantonese, Mandarin, and Taishanese), Vietnamese, Japanese, and Khmer. In addition, we
have an extensive pool of freelance interpreters for languages less often requested or as
back-up for regular and per diem staff.
An interpreter will be made available to you at any hospital or clinic visit. Planned visits are
scheduled in conjunction with interpreter availability for the language requested.
Chinese-speaking patients may call 617-636-5331 and Vietnamese-speaking patients
may call 617-636-5765 to connect with an interpreter who can help schedule or cancel
appointments, request prescription refills, help contact providers, or answer patient
questions.

The clinic is staffed by an interpreter who stays in the clinic throughout the session and
offers translation services to any patients who may need it.
Comprehensive lung care for patients of Asian descent
Our pulmonologists have expertise in diagnosing and treating lung conditions that commonly
occur in patients of Asian descent, including but not limited to:
• Pulmonary infections
• Smoking-related diseases such as COPD
• I nterstitial lung disease such as pulmonary
• Lung nodules
fibrosis etc.
• Chronic cough and shortness of breath
• Abnormal lung x-rays or CT scans
• Asthma
We work closely with our colleagues in other departments throughout the hospital to
provide patients with best and most comprehensive care possible. We communicate
with the patient’s primary care provider to ensure appropriate transition of care.
