The project was designed specifically to involve our regional youth. Schools from across the J2G region can create an introduction community video and have the chance to win a $1,000 scholarship and internship at a local television station. In September 2015, J2G and four of its implementation partners, CEDA, RAEDI, Red Wing Port Authority and Winona Port Authority, hosted a regional familiarization tour through DEED for a national site selector from The Prager Company out of Chicago. During the two-day regional tour, the consultant toured the area and attended a regional reception that included the hosts, J2G representatives and several regional businesses including Harmony Enterprises, Inc., Bowman Tool & Machining, AcenTek, IBM and WinCraft. Nearly 40 attendees boarded a chartered bus on Thursday, July 21, 2016, for the first ever Regional Development Tour. Partners, CEDA and J2G, developed a pilot project tour that visited four communities: Blooming Prairie, Byron, Dodge Center and Stewartville. The group learned about economic activity, opportunities and interesting facts about each community. Following the tour, a reception was held at Ground Round Restaurant for further networking. Due to the success of the first RDT, plans are being made for RDT 2017. Rochester Chamber of Commerce Foundation (RCCF) is an implementation partner for J2G’s Workforce Development and Talent Committees and has a number of initiatives. Regional Transportation Priorities Transportation & Communications Committee The J2G Transportation & Communications Committee has identified the following regional priorities: • • • • Completion of Highway 14 Improvements Maximize Capacity of the Rochester International Airport Local Bridge Bonding Program Funding U.S. Highway 52 Safety/Surface Improvements between Marion & Harmony • Regional Transit Service Growth & Transit Funding Increases The committee will work with the Governing Committee to secure local business and government support as well as to secure passage of any legislation needed. Industry Roundtables Economic Committee The Economic Committee has held a series of industry roundtables throughout 2016 at People’s Energy Cooperative, Oronoco. They included food and dairy, manufacturing, technology, and tourism. The goal was to assemble a small sample of regional industry leaders to learn the challenges and opportunities they faced as a business and industry and how J2G can best serve and support their ability to thrive here. More than 25 businesses from Austin, Albert Lea, Dodge Center, Harmony, Houston, Owatonna, Plainview, Rochester, Stewartville and Winona participated. We Are More (WAM) Exhibition Diversity and Inclusion Committee The WAM Exhibition is a touring photography exhibit showcasing, celebrating, and creating conversations about the benefits of diversity and inclusion in southeastern Minnesota’s regional economy. WAM is the creation of Journey to Growth’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and highlights local people and their stories. The exhibit will kick off in the spring of 2017 and move locations regularly throughout select southeastern Minnesota communities. Hubworks.mn is an online tool created to connect people to the resources, employers, and jobs available in SE MN. It is in the prototype phase and looks to fall 2017 for a full launch. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) is in response to research that indicates art training improves cognition skills. Over 2000 regional 7-12 grade students will attend the STEAM Summit in November 2016. Job Shadow Program is a partnership between Byron High School and RCCF. Over 300 11th grade students will experience a “day in the life” of a professional in one of the fields the students are interested in. After taking their Minnesota Career Inventory Survey (MCIS), students research and rank their top three professions based on the results of the assessment.
