Some people are convinced that aliens have visited earth, and, in fact,
an alien craft crashed in a storrn near the small town of Roswell, New

(a) On the night of July 2, 1947, a fierce storm raced across the
desert near Roswell. (5) The next moming, W. W.Brazel found
strange debris littering the landscape of his ranch. (6) He discovered
pieces of parchment paper, tinfoil-like substances, sffands of wire, and
small metallic rods covered with undecipherable writing. (7) It's so
weird how people always say aliens have oniy four long hngers, large
almond-shaped eyes, and greenish skin. (8) Brazel collected some of
the articles and gave them to a local sheriff, who contacted Roswell
Army Airfield. (9) Major Jesse Marcel, the intelligence office for the
509'n and member of the Counter Intelligence Corps, was sent to
investigate. (10) He, along with Colonel Wiliam Bianchard, spended
the day at the scene collecting samples to take back to the base.
(11) In l978just before their death, Marcel told researchers that he
felt the debris was "nothing made on earth." (I2) According to
Marcel, the tinfoil-like substance could even be dented with a sledge
hammer or burned with a blowtorch.
(13) At the same time, over 100 miles away, a man named
Grady Barnett came upon what he reported as a crashed flying disc.
(14) Besides it lay four sma1l dead bodies. (15) They had unusually
large heads with big slanted eyes. (16) There bodies were wearing
tight, one-piece, gray suits with no visible fastenings. (17) The
military was quick to respond, yet Barnett and other witnesses were
ordered not to speak of the incident. (18) An official press release
fbllowed in which Lt. Walter Haut which claimed the flying saucer
mystery had been solved and that the crashed saucer had been
recovered by the 509th Bomb Group. (19) His press release was

quickly canceled by General Roger Ramy who explained the saucer
wasn't no more than the unique remains of a standard weather
balloon.
