Outline Brief
This presentation suggests that within the Land domain,
there is not only a need to define an approach to open
architectures, but also to mandate their use, in order to
provide an agile framework for our fighting forces going
forward.
This presentation also discusses how the UK GVA
relates to the US Victory standard and how
interoperability may be achieved.

sub-systems”
“Bases where nothing is
integrated; multiple sets
of cabling, laptops and
antennas”

integrated equipment, with many

Open Architecture – what is it?
• “An architecture whose specifications are public. This
includes officially approved standards as well as
privately designed architectures whose specifications are
made public by the designers.” Wikipedia

Land Open Systems Architecture
•
•
•
LOSA is the architecture for the Land Environment and
is owned at 3-Star level at Army HQ
Its purpose is to ensure the delivery of integrated,
interoperable, agile force elements
It operates in 3 domains:
– Operational, which describes the operational need and use
– Capability , which describes the functional requirements
– Technical, which describes the technical solution space
•
•
It provides a well defined boundary with other
environments

GVA compared with Victory
GVA:
• The Integration of any subsystem on the vehicle
• Defined Power and Data interfaces
• A detailed description of the HMI
• A detailed description for data exchange
(using DDS middleware)
• V&V backed up by experimentation & trials
• Is being adopted by NATO
1 August 2014
Victory:
• Integration of C4ISR subsystems on the vehicle
• Definition of shared processing resources
• Data Interfaces to platform subsystems
• A detailed description for data exchange
(using Web Services)
• A robust V& V process

Conclusions
By mandating the adoption of open standards, UK MOD can
realise:
• Improved operational effectiveness:
–
–
–
–
Rapid response to changing situations.
Reduced training burden.
Increased platform availability.
Improved interoperability and easier system management.
• Reduced cost of ownership:
– Faster, simpler, and cheaper procurement.
–
–
–
–
The ability to procure heterogeneous, multi-vendor open systems.
Easy to upgrade.
Reduced TL costs.
Prevents proprietary lock-in.
• The possibility of coalition interoperability
