This presentation also discusses how the UK GVA relates to the US Victory standard and how interoperability may be achieved. 1 August 2014 5 Real life issues… “ A dog’s breakfast of federated sub-systems” “Bases where nothing is integrated; multiple sets of cabling, laptops and antennas” 1 August 2014 “Soldiers carrying up to 75kg of badly integrated equipment, with many different types of batteries” “Power anarchy’; about 50 different types of generator in service” 6 Army 2020 Transformation Open Architecture – what is it? • “An architecture whose specifications are public. This includes officially approved standards as well as privately designed architectures whose specifications are made public by the designers.” Wikipedia 1 August 2014 8 Land Open Systems Architecture • • • LOSA is the architecture for the Land Environment and is owned at 3-Star level at Army HQ Its purpose is to ensure the delivery of integrated, interoperable, agile force elements It operates in 3 domains: – Operational, which describes the operational need and use – Capability , which describes the functional requirements – Technical, which describes the technical solution space • • It provides a well defined boundary with other environments Working with industry & building on 15+ years of joint research CAPABILITY OPERATIONAL LOSA TECHNICAL Land Open Systems Architecture CAPABILITY OPERATIONAL LOSA Land Land Maritime Air Common Open Interface (Land) TECHNICAL Joint Enablers Vehicles Soldiers Bases C4ISTAR Training Logistics Weapons Coalition 1 August 2014 10 Land Open Systems Architecture Land Open Systems Technical Architecture Common Open Interface (Land) (COI(L)) Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) Def Stan 23-09 GVA Generic Base Architecture (GBA) Def Stan 23-13 GBA Generic Soldier Architecture (GSA) Def Stan 23-12 GSA Def Stan 23-14 LOSA and COI(L) Defence Standards, Joint Service Publication and Joining Rules Other Domains: Maritime Air Joint Enablers: •C4ISR •Weapons •Logistics •Training Coalition and NGOs Civil Emergency Services OGDs External Standards and Rules Standards are not a design! Victory DB PLATFORM - A GVA DDS PLATFORM- B HOST NATION owned ITAR partition? 1 August 2014 19 Conclusions By mandating the adoption of open standards, UK MOD can realise: • Improved operational effectiveness: – – – – Rapid response to changing situations. Reduced training burden. Increased platform availability. Improved interoperability and easier system management. • Reduced cost of ownership: – Faster, simpler, and cheaper procurement. – – – – The ability to procure heterogeneous, multi-vendor open systems. Easy to upgrade. Reduced TL costs. Prevents proprietary lock-in. • The possibility of coalition interoperability Thankyou for your attention… Questions? 1 August 2014 21
