Though the conference’s official purpose was to “shape the center,” the
spirit of this year’s United Synagogues’ biennial would have been better reflected by the motto “embracing innovation from the margins.” Most of the sessions
were explicitly focused on reconnecting the Conservative Movement’s hundreds of affiliated congregations with a unifying set of core beliefs and practices
so that we can develop a revitalized – indeed, reimagined – sense of who we are
as a movement.
What became clear over the course of the conference – a two-day Shabbaton followed by three days of business meetings and presentations – was that
the real centers of innovation and dynamism in the Conservative Movement today lie not in its New York headquarters or in satellite field offices, but rather in
the communities in which Conservative Judaism is being lived and transformed.
There is truth to the widely held perception that the umbrella bodies and doctrinal statements that officially define Conservative Judaism have been evolving
with glacial slowness, held back in no small part by the small minority of adherents and affiliates who cling to a Judaism of yesteryear (if not a few years before that). Were that the complete picture of Conservative Judaism today, we
as an affiliated congregation would have reason to despair.
But the true measure of the potential and dynamism of the Conservative
Movement, of the form of Jewish thought and expression that we have collectively chosen to embrace, is located not in its central bodies or their official
doctrines, but rather in the periphery where the congregations themselves –
especially the smaller, more nimble, congregations like our own -- are found.
What became clear over the course of the conference was that while the
movement’s “talking heads” are laboriously debating (often behind closed
doors) what a Judaism of the 21st Century might look like, the rest of us are living it. We are actively, innovatively wrestling with questions central to our
lives as Jews – and as a people – including: intermarriage, patrilineal descent,
shifting notions of community, changes in gender roles and identity, and the
opportunities presented by new technologies (my own presentation shared our
experience at Beth El with live-streaming services). These initiatives are taking
place in parallel with efforts to address long-standing challenges such as support for those with mental illness, engaging young families and retaining our
young people as Conservative Jews through their college years and beyond.
Conservative congregations and their professional and lay leadership are
coming up with diverse, innovative solutions to these challenges, putting their
ideas to the test and refining them in the lived space of communal Jewish life.
Working in concert, we are creating a Judaism that, while the unmistakable continuation of an inheritance stretching back thousands of years, is also relevant
and resonant in our time and, as such, a bequest that our children will be eager
to own and carry forward. Congregation Beth El – its small size and less

As we prepare to celebrate Chanukah, the festival of rededication, let us rededicate ourselves to
working to make our congregation, our Eastern Connecticut Jewish community, our Conservative Movement and, more broadly, the Jewish world spaces in which we and our children joyfully choose to live,
pray and celebrate the sacred.

Our Mission Statement: The mission of Congregation Beth El is to foster a welcoming, diverse, and egalitarian community within the
framework of Conservative Judaism, and to enrich the lives of its members through worship, learning, fellowship, celebration and
tikun olam—healing the world.
President’s Message
Dear Congregants:
In this season of thankfulness and rededication, I think it is important for us to take the time to appreciate
Congregation Beth El. I also think it is important to take a moment to think about how we can continue
to thrive in Southeastern Connecticut.
During my predecessor’s term as President of the congregation, a group of members volunteered to research our options for optimizing the use of our lovely, but aging, unnecessarily large, and costly-tomaintain building. This Real Estate Research Committee meets intermittently to explore options for our
present and future facility needs.
As you may already be aware, the committee has completed some exploratory work. The first set of options that the committee has considered involves leasing out a portion of the lower level of our building.
We already lease space in our building to a number of organizations and hope to find more that are compatible with our own needs. Though the Solomon Schechter Academy uses a portion of our lower level,
the space the school leases is larger than what it requires. This creates a possible revenue stream for our
congregation, with no tradeoff for the school, which we all agree is a key asset to our Jewish community.
Another option that the Real Estate Research Committee is exploring is selling some of the land adjacent
to the synagogue.
A third option it is investigating is determining the market value of the building. The Committee has
consulted a commercial real estate specialist to help in gathering the most accurate projections possible.
Please allow me to clarify: There has been no decision to sell either the building or the land. The committee is simply gathering information so that we, as a congregation, are aware of the available options,
their associated costs or revenue streams, and their tradeoffs.
The Real Estate Research Committee is in an information-gathering phase. I will keep you apprised of
the committee’s activities throughout this research phase.
At a future time, when the committee has enough data assembled to present a list of options to the congregation as a whole, we will have an open forum. Everyone in the congregation will be invited to be a
part of the conversation, ask questions, consider the options, suggest alternatives, and vote on any actions
proposed.
If you have any questions about the committee or the options it is researching, please share them with
me.
Respectfully,
Adam Goldstein

Little League Shabbat
Saturday, December 12th
from 10:30 a.m.-noon
On Saturday, December 12, we will continue
our “Little League Shabbat” program, a morning of stories, songs and games that will give our youngest congregants a taste
of what makes Shabbat special.
Aimed primarily at children of pre-school and elementary ages, but open
to all, the activity will take place in the Chapel from 10:30-noon (in parallel
with the Torah and musaf services in the main sanctuary). Children and their
adult chaperones are then welcomed to join the whole community for a haimish
Shabbat lunch in the Social Hall.
Attention Beth El “Snowbirds”
Before leaving Connecticut for your warmer winter home, please be sure to contact the
Beth El office so that your Beth El mail can be sent to the correct address. It is also helpful if you can provide the date that you expect to return to Connecticut. Thank you, and be sure to send a postcard from your
warm winter haven!

Supper With The Author Series
Professor Simon Feldman - Against Authenticity: Why You Shouldn’t Be Yourself
Wednesday, December 2, 5:45 p.m. at Zachs Hillel House, Connecticut College
Supper and talk - $15 per person; talk only - $5 per person. Reservations required.
Please contact the Federation at 860-442-8062 to r.s.v.p.
“Be true to yourself” - it is a dictum so ubiquitous that it can seem like both philosophical
wisdom and an empty truism. Should we aspire to an ideal of living authentically? What does it
mean to be true to yourself? Against Authenticity: Why You Shouldn’t Be Yourself is a philosophical exploration and critique of the ideal of authenticity.
From reviews… “In this accessible work of philosophy, Feldman makes cogent arguments for the
view that you should be yourself only if you are a good and reasonable person—otherwise, you
should be someone else.
“Feldman’s book is, quite simply, the clearest, most interesting book on authenticity in years. Its
compelling arguments against the misuses of the concept of “being true to yourself” in ethical
thought should be of deep interest…”

Chanukah is just around the corner and two delightful books for all ages engage in the retelling
of two classical tales for a Chanukah reading audience: The Gingerbread Man and Charles Dickens’
The Christmas Carol.
The Runaway Latkes involves a whole pan full of feisty latkes that just weren’t going to be
served to the synagogue. Rebecca Bloom was preparing a latke feast when after she had finished frying
the first batch to a perfect golden brown, they all hopped out of the pan and took off rolling out the door
and down through the town taunting poor Rebecca with the following refrain:
“Big and round, crisp and brown,
Off we roll to see the town!
And YOU can’t catch us!”
And just as in the original Gingerbread Man, the whole town got involved in recapturing these
miscreants.
The chief character of Hanukkah, Shmanukkah is Scroogemacher, who probably out-scrooges
Scrooge himself when it comes to hard heartedness and stinginess. However,
he softens quicker than chocolate left in the sun when the Rabbis of Hanukkah Past, Present and Future
arrive to point out his history and destiny.
Both books have lovely illustrations that enhance the flavors of these respective tales.

Keys to the library are in the office; the checkout box is on the library window sill. Please remember to use the sign out card in the back of any book you borrow.

The Simcha Shabbat has been a wonderful success and will continue on this year! Each month
we will have one specially designated Shabbat when we will be reserving honors in the Torah
service for congregants who are marking a special occasion during the month. We will also be
serving a more elaborate Kiddush lunch that Shabbat and are asking those who are marking
special occasions that month to make contributions toward the luncheon -- and, of course, to
come along with your family members and friends! If you are interested in being a co-sponsor of
