Be Part of the 2010
One Maryland One Book Program
--Maryland's first and only statewide community reading project.
In its third year, it’s designed to bring together diverse people –
neighbors, friends, family and those you have never met in your
community –for a shared experience. Everyone is asked to read
the same book at the same time to be able to participate in
book-centered discussions together.
Outcasts United, a nonfiction work by New York Times reporter,
Warren St. John, is the selection for 2010. The story of a soccer
team of refugee boys from war zones called the "Fugees", their
coach, and the town where they live--Clarkston, Georgia--a sleepy,
southern town upended by refugee resettlement, it’s an inspiring
tale of a small town becoming global, about resilience, and the
power of one person to make a difference and the challenge
of creating community in a place where people seem
to have little in common.

Spotlight on Library Superheros:
We would like to salute some dedicated members of the community, FSU’s Center for Creative
Writing’s staff and the Allegany Arts Council’s staff, who are tirelessly networking with our library system,
to pull together our local literary community. Reading and Writing are so integrally connected!
*Don’t miss the public discussion on forging a literary community at this year’s Press Festival kick-off.*
Coordination has the center providing the literary expertise and the council aiding in the
recognition of literature as an art, thus allowing for more matching funding and richer
diversity of events; both provide beautiful and comfortable facilities for events. Their Events
Calendars, ―The Writer’s Notepad‖, and Arts Flashes link people to ―all things literary‖ in our
communities. The more people who know about what’s happening, the greater the chance is
for ensuring a base of support for programs. It’s telling that there are built- in opportunities
for the inclusion of kids into the literary community that is being built here and
that ―Pick Up That Book—Getting Kids Involved in Reading & Writing‖ a Panel
and Roundtable Discussion has been added to the Press Festival this year.
It says that our literary community here is posed for future growth!
Thank You!
