Legal Representative: Mr. Stuart Margetson (Chair)
Stuart is a Consultant in the Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department at
Matheson where he advises on dispute resolution in the areas of product liability,
administrative and environmental law, professional negligence and commercial litigation
generally. Stuart is also a senior member of the firm's Life Sciences Group and advises many
clients in the life sciences sector. Stuart is a CEDR (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution)
Accredited Mediator and has experience in representing clients in the mediation of
disputes. Stuart is a Panel Member of both The Solicitors Mutual Defence Fund and the
Medical Protection Society. Stuart is a member of DRI (Defence Research Institute) Europe;
the editorial board of the Irish Planning and Environmental Law Journal and Union
Internationale des Avocats. He is a founder, former Chairman and present Honorary VicePresident and Council Member of the Irish Environmental Law Association. He is a founder,
former Chairman and present Council member of the Irish Commercial Mediation
Association.
Clinical Representative: Dr Faisal Sharif
Doctor Sharif is a senior lecturer in regenerative medicine in National University of Ireland,
Galway and a consultant cardiologist for Galway University Hospitals.
He completed his general professional training in medicine at Galway University Hospital
and completed his Specialist Training in Interventional Cardiology under the Irish Committee
on Higher Medical Training from Royal College of Physicians Ireland (2000-2008). He
acquired his PhD in vascular biology and Gene Eluting Stents from the Regenerative
Medicine Institute (REMEDI) at National University of Ireland Galway (2003-2006). He also
holds a Diploma in Health Care Management from Institute of Public Administration in
Dublin (2005-2007). He was elected to a two year Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology
between Clinique Pasteur, Toulouse France and St James Hospital Dublin (Boston Scientific
Travelling Grant). During his tenure in Toulouse, he worked closely with Dr Jean Fajadet and
gained expertise Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) via transradial access. From
2009-2010 he worked at OLV Cardiovascular Centre, Aalst, Belgium and worked with
Bernard De Bryune, William Wijns and Jozef Bartunek, among others. During his training
abroad he has been actively involved with the EuroPCR. In addition to PCI, he has gained
experience in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic stenosis, closure of
septal wall defects and percutaneous stem cell injection into the
human myocardium. In October 2010, he returned to Ireland to take up the position of
Senior Lecturer in Regenerative Medicine and Interventional Cardiologist at Galway
University Hospitals in Ireland. His key area of interest is translational medicine focusing on
cardiovascular clinical trials for medical devices and basic science.
Patient Representative: Dr. Muireann Cullen, CEO, St Mary’s Telford, Dublin 4.
Muireann assumed the role of CEO of St. Mary’s Telford, a nursing home for visually
impaired women, Merrion Road in January 2017. This is following a nine year stint as
manager of the Nutrition & Health Foundation in Ibec. Muireann holds an Executive MBA
from UCD Smurfit Business School (2015), a PhD in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from
Trinity College Dublin (2001), a degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Trinity College
Dublin and a diploma in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Dublin Institute of Technology
(1997). She has a wide range of experience spanning research, clinical and private practice,
regulatory, public health and industry previously working in a number of hospitals, the Food
Safety Authority of Ireland and Cow & Gate. She was also the resident dietitian with TV3’s
The Morning Show. Muireann has also lectured in communications on the Human Nutrition
and Dietetics & Public Health Nutrition courses for DIT. She is also on the Board of Directors
of the Irish Tourist Assistance Service.
Industry Representative: Jerry Kiely, ex General Manager, Teleflex
Jerry Kiely was General Manager, with Teleflex Medical OEM, Limerick from 1997 to 2013.
Prior to this Jerry also held the position of General Manager with Amicon Ireland Ltd,
Limerick from 1979 to 1997. Jerry has 34 years’ experience in the Medical Device industry.
Over the course of Jerry’s career he implemented key strategies, including the development
of new and improved products and processes. During his period with Teleflex, the company
designed, developed and commercialised the first Hemofilter, trade name Diafilter. They
also launched the first Hemofilter for treating paediatrics called Minifilter, and developed a
range of produces for Hemoconcentration, including launching the first non-rinse device.
Under his leadership Teleflex, Limerick won the Medica Compamed Innovation of the year
award 2012.
Patient/Research Representative: Mr. Neil Johnson, CEO Croí
Neil Johnson is Chief Executive of Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation which is a
registered Irish charity. Appointed in 1993 as its first CEO, Neil has led and managed the
development of the charity whose funding of pioneering initiatives has positively impacted
at every level of cardiac care, from pre-hospital to post-hospital recovery & rehabilitation. In
2014 he was instrumental in establishing the National Institute for Preventive Cardiology as
an affiliate of NUI Galway which is actively involved in research, education and training.
Croí has more recently expanded its work into the areas of stroke, diabetes, and obesity.
Among its milestones, the opening of the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre in Galway in 2012 - a
first in Ireland in the areas of prevention & rehabilitation; research; education; patient &
family support. The Centre has established links with universities and institutions in Ireland
and abroad and provides a range of evidence-based programmes and interventions
delivered by a specialist health team.
Neil holds a Master’s degree in Psychology from the National University of Ireland Galway.
He is the current Chair of the first Saolta University Healthcare Group Patient Council. Neil is
also a founding member and trustee of iHHub (the global network of heart failure patient
organisations) and is an Honorary Clinical Fellow of the School of Medicine, NUIG where he
leads an undergraduate special studies module on the ‘patient voice’.
