Hypertonic: High solute concentration, the environment has a higher solute
concentration than the cell. The environment is hypertonic to the cell. Water will leave the
cell, the cell will shrink.

Hypotonic: low solute concentration, the environment has a lower solute concentration than
the cell. The environment is hypotonic to the cell. Water will move into the cell, the cell will
swell.

Isotonic: the concentration of solute is equal in the environment and in the cell. Water will leave
and enter the cell at the same rate. The cell will stay the same size.
