Headmaster‟s
comments
brought forward
Our 2009 NCEA results have been finalised and as our results
show, we have much to be proud of. Hastings Boys‟ High School
was the top state school in Hawke‟s Bay in NCEA Levels 1. 2 and
3. What is also pleasing is the historical improvement over the
recordable period of NCEA. There are very few schools in the
country that can boast such results. Clearly, Hastings Boys‟ High
School is “meeting the needs of young men of Hawke‟s Bay.”

Debating and Public Speaking news
Michael Findlay, Deputy Head Boy, represented the school at the Rotary
International District 9930 Speech Contest on Wednesday 3rd March. Michael
spoke for seven minutes in response to the topic “Count Your Blessings” and
delved into a comparison between young people‟s experiences in his
grandfather‟s generation and those of his own „Pot Noodle‟ generation. He
got commended for a well researched speech.
We are also delighted to be fielding three teams in the Hawke‟s Bay
Secondary Schools‟ Debating competition for 2010 under the guidance of Mrs
Annabel Harris. The Junior team comprising of Jesse Nugent-Tompsett, Nickalis Jablonski, Ethan
Dempsey-Wilkie and Julian Brown are debating against St John‟s College on Monday 15th March as
the affirmative „that problem children are the result of problem parents‟. Nickalis brings with him so
much prior experience that he is debating above his age in the Year 10 division. This team is also
grateful to Prefect Piripi Nelson who is coaching the team. Two Senior teams are being coached by
Mrs Harris and Mr Lee and are debating the negative „that the youth of today are a credit to their
country‟ away at Karamu and St John‟s on Wednesday 24th March. The Year 13 boys who make up
these teams are Matt Bartlett, Ben Phibbs, Ryan Jones and Josh Horne (Team Harrris) and Tipene
Apatu, Michael Findlay, Piripi Nelson, Liam Grant and Te Aranui Ngawhiki (Team Lee). We wish them
good luck.
New Zealand Blood Service
will be collecting blood at Hastings Boys‟ High School on
Wednesday the 21 April. The Care of Children Act 2004 allows people 16 years and over to make
their own decisions about whether or not they wish to give blood. Senior students may choose to
donate blood at this session. It is important that we encourage students into a lifetime habit of
donating blood and making a worthwhile contribution to their community. Please support your son‟s
decision. For more information call 0800GIVEBLOOD or look at www.nzblood.co.nz

Junior Health Education at Hastings Boys’ High School
The junior health education programme at Hastings Boys‟ High School reflects the philosophy
of the New Curriculum and has undergone a tremendous amount of change.
Through evaluation and re-evaluation coupled with fresh ideas from well equipped and
enthusiastic staff we have moulded together an effective health programme that meets the
expanding demands of our pupils.
The aim of Health programme is to ensure all individuals are provided with the opportunity to
develop personal skills to promote the health and well being of students and staff.
Health is not a fixed concept and our programme has endeavoured to consider it in the
„Hauora‟ sense - physical, emotional, social, and spiritual.
To fully promote the students‟ personal health skills all of the teachers call upon the resources
available in the wider community and employ dynamic and varied teaching approaches both in
and out of the classroom.
The teacher is always a good role model, promoting interest, enthusiasm, and enjoyment for
the students. In doing so he also is able to cater for the individual differences of the students in
Health Education.
Junior Health Mission Statement
“To promote the students’ well-being at Hastings Boys’ High School the health
programme will promote physical, social, mental/emotional and spiritual development
appropriate to our learners’ needs and to maintain this process throughout life.
Learning outcomes are written to reflect the needs of pupils, staff, parents and the
community.”
The Health Programme
Health in year 9 and 10 at Hastings Boys‟ High School is taught one period per week. This
period is allocated at the start of the year. They are taught by their Physical Education teacher.

Mrs J Field – Returning Officer
Art Deco at Hastings Boys’ High School
A new venture for the school was for the staff to „dress-up‟
Art Deco style to celebrate the Art Deco weekend in
Hawke‟s Bay. Mrs Read „stole the show‟ with her fur and
matching dress and hat.
Mr Sturch related the history of the Hawke‟s Bay
earthquake and how the Art Deco fashion was created in
this region to the Friday morning assembly.
Leadership Camp
The 2010 Leadership Camp was again held at
Omatua Guide Camp from the 7th to 9th February.
The camp was designed to test the 21 Year 13
students‟ teamwork and leadership skills which
are a requirement of being a prefect at this
school.
The boys were involved with firemen‟s training at
the Napier Fire Station, together with a trip on the
waka on the Ngaruroro River at Clive. The boys were also involved in a
Royal Marine training course and different police codes demonstrated their
skills. The camp concluded with a four-hour bike ride back to school. This ride tested the boys both
mentally and physically but they said they had an awesome and inspiring time and were appreciative of
the staff involved, as well as Mr Sturch who even rode back to school with the boys!

Return of the „Leadership Camp‟
Ngati Kahungunu Waka Experience
During week 2 of this year the schools year 9
classes all had the opportunity to take part in
paddling the Kahungunu Waka which is situated at
the Hawke‟s Bay Rowing Club on the Ngaruroro
river.
Classes were taken out by bus and on arrival were
met by kaumatua Jim Edwards. The boys were
told of the origins of the waka and the history of the
Kahungunu rohe. Once this had been completed
the class was taken through the chants that were
to be used and the mechanics of getting the waka
moving.
Classes and individuals working together as one was the call and most classes did extremely well in
getting the waka moving and manoeuvering it around the river. Special mention has to be made of 9Mu
form class as they were voted the most proficient paddlers of their year group.
This experience was well received by all involved and served its purpose of uniting each form class.

Basketball
Czebalos Smiler has put in many hours of pre-season work training up to 10
hours a week with the Hawke‟s Bay Hawks National Basketball League
Squad.
This has lead to his recent selection into the starting five, playing point
guard as previous NZ Tall Black Players - Paul Henare and Jarred Kenny
have been out with injury. As it is only the pre-season, it has been a huge
accomplishment as he is the youngest player at 16 years of age. The next
youngest starting player is 24 years old.
Czebalos has described the experience as „good and it has also toughened
me up‟.
Czebalos has performed consistently in training and is very confident for his age. He has an excellent
basketball mind beyond his years and his defence is what coach Shawn Dennis is impressed with the
most. This training will ultimately benefit HBHS as this year continues. Czebalos will grow as a leader
and nothing should get in his way of pursuing the National Secondary School Championship with his
fellow HBHS team mates.
On Wednesday 3rd March Czebalos travelled to Christchurch to play the Rams in the Hawk‟s first NBL
game of the season, narrowly losing this game by 3pts. He then travelled to Invercargill on Friday to
play Southland. The Hawks won this game in overtime.
Czebalos described the road trip as a big
learning curve. He learned how serious you have to be to compete at the NBL level and will try to
transfer this professional attitude over to his HBHS team mates when his duties are finished with the
Hawks.
Basketball
Mataeus Marsh recently competed in Australia at the twin cities of
Albury-Wodonga as part of the U14 New Zealand Development Team.
His Kea team beat the Victoria Goldminers 71-41 in the final. Mataeus is
a fearless point guard who is very quick and has great vision with his
main strength being able to penetrate and dish the ball out to his team
mates. A wonderful achievement for a junior of our school.
Rugby
With the return of the Senior Rugby Academy a number of excited young men have been given the
opportunity to use sport as a tool to help their goals of achieving Level 3. Within this class the students
are given the opportunity to train, learn about training, and set goals. This is conducted by both staff
within school and external facilitators such as the Hawke‟s Bay Player Development Strength and
Conditioning Coach Karl Bloxham. Students within this class all learn aspects of professional sport as
players, trainers, coaches, physios and nutritionists.
Junior Sports Academy In the second year of this Academy we have another very high quality of
student entering in Year 9 with a view to developing skills which are required to participate in the Super
8 competition. Added to this, the selected Year 10‟s have returned for a second year in the Academy
to reach or better the potential that they displayed as Year 9‟s. The new Academy top has also
promoted a sense of pride in the boys.

School Canoe Polo
The year has started in a busy fashion for Canoe Polo. We entered two teams into the Art Deco
Tournament held on the 20th and 21st February that were comprised of a mixture of junior and senior
students. The aim was to give boys a bit of match practice before Regionals held on 6th and 7th March.
The school has recently purchased a fleet of 7 carbon-Kevlar boats and it was imperative that we
became familiar with them as they are faster and more manoeuverable than boats we have used in the
past.
Both teams struggled on the first day of the tournament as we lacked match fitness and struggled with
the speed of the other teams. The boys learned fast however and on the second day won three out of
the four games played. The teams came 5th and 7th which was very pleasing for a first up effort.
The goal now is to get at least one team to the National Schools Tournament that is to held in
Wellington in late March. To do this we must qualify by doing well at our regional tournament. The boys
have practiced hard and with some luck we will make it.
Watch this space!!
We will also be looking forward to winter league this year as we have an unprecedented number of
boys wanting to play for the school. It‟s pleasing to see so many year 9 boys wanting to play the sport.
The future for the Canoe Polo at Hastings Boys‟ High School is looking bright.
