PE and Sports Round-up
Wow, January has gone so quickly and we are now
already approaching term 4. This term has been a
very busy one, with lots taking place within school.
Most recently the children have returned from Hilltop
where year 5 and 6 had a great time taking part in a
range of activities from archery to a 30 feet assault
course. I think the children all came back tired and
slept well on Wednesday night.
The children have taken part in a range of sporting
activities as part of our competition Fridays. This term
the children have competed in KS1 multi-skills, Goal
ball, Pop Lacrosse and Tag Rugby. The children have
really enjoyed learning about different sports and have
had some success with them. Well done to all those
children who have taken part.
Year 5 have taken part in Carre’s science outreach
programme, where they have attended science lessons every Tuesday at the school. The children I know
have thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and have
learnt a great deal in terms of setting up experiments
and investigating.
Thank you again this term for parental support with
children’s learning at home. It is fantastic to see that
children are reading regularly at home and even better
to see the impact that this is having on the children’s
work.
Have a Happy and safe Holiday.
Mr Clay
It has been yet another busy term, with a large number of competitions, festivals
and matches. Eight children from Year 1 and 2 took part in a multi-skills festival,
developing a number of different skills and mixing with children from other schools.
Six Year 5 and 6 children took part in a Goalball competition, a sports for the visually impaired. Two teams from Church Lane took part, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. Eight children from Year 5 and 6 tried a new sport, Pop Lacrosse, they
quickly picked up the rules and the basic skills and then took part in a competition,
finishing 3rd.
The Netball team played two matches, one against Kirkby the other against Heckington, winning both games. Their next match will be against Our Lady at the end
of February.
The Football team played three matches, Chestnut Street, Helpringham and
Winchelsea were the opponents. They lost two games and drew one. The team still
have three more matches to play after half term.
All children in KS2 took part in a Gymnastics Virtual competition, learning a set routine, which was then filmed and judged by the Carre’s Grammar School Outreach
team and students from the Girls High School. There were no winners from Church
Lane, however there were some excellent performances from the children!
Next term is again set to be a busy one, starting with ‘Dan the Skipping Man’ coming into school on Tuesday 21st February to work with the whole school! There is
also a BMX event, Volleyball, Hockey, Table Tennis and Tri-Golf competitions to
look forward to.
REMINDER: Please ensure that PE kits are in school on the first day back, all kits
MUST include, t-shirt, shorts and plimsolls/trainers.
Thanks
Miss Dix
YEAR 6
UNIFORM
It has been an exciting, hardworking start to 2017 for year 6!
This half term we have been looking at complicated areas of maths including algebra and finding missing angles. The children have really started to think about the
reasoning behind what they are doing and are making a big push towards mastery
and explanations in mathematics. They even taught some of the lessons!
The children’s English work has been based around our theme of The Hobbit; they
have written interesting adventure stories, along with some brilliant instructions
about how to care for different creatures from the stories. Along the way we used
the skills we were learning in English and decided to follow some of the instructions
we had been using by cooking.
Please ensure your child has the
correct uniform on daily.

PHOTOS
Another term comes to the end and it has truly been a fun-filled, incredible term.
In maths, the children have been working through the Fractions, percentages
and decimals section on the curriculum. The children have worked incredibly
hard, from this they have scored the highest average on their post test. A massive
82% average score – which is unbelievable! WELL DONE!!
English has been a continuation of our IPEELL scheme. This time we wrote explanation texts, explaining how solids turn to liquids and then on to gases as part
of our science cross-curricular writing. In addition to this, the children have written
wonderful narrative stories about dinosaurs in conjunction with our history/
geography dinosaur topic.
We have our first two semi-finalists in our BANANAGRAMS competition. These
children are just 5 wins away from playing in a live competition in London! Good
luck guys!
Lastly, the vast majority of the class have returned from their Hilltop residential
unscathed, thankfully! Lots of fun was had from making campfires from scratch
(with no matches) to climbing up in excess of 15m on a climbing wall and tree top
trail. I am immensely proud of all the children that went as they pushed themselves to their limit and did it with a smile on their faces…maybe not the smiles all
the time! J
Mrs Minucci was equally pleased with the children that stayed behind for their
impeccable behaviour and effort during the week!
YEAR 4
This term Year Four have been busy working on lots
of different things! In English, we have been under
taking a book study. This has been ‘The Water Horse’
by Dick King Smith, we have been busily working our
way through it. We have looked closely at each chapter and have been able to write a biography on Dick
himself as well as a fictional letter from the point of
view of Kirstie. We have been able to use fronted adverbials really well in these pieces!
In Maths, Year Four have been looking at fractions and
decimals. We are now able to order them, compare them
and use them in calculations too. In addition to this, we
can convert between decimals and fractions and can
even show equivalent fractions. Also, we have become
more confident in our reasoning skills (explaining how we
have solved the problems). The children did really well in
their post-tests! More recently, we have started a new
topic in Maths (statistics) which we will be continuing after half term.
In Science this term, we have been
looking at the Water Cycle. We were
able to draw and label it and explain
the different states that water goes
through during it. This will come in
handy next term when we look more
at different states of matter (gas, liquid and solid).
In Topic, we have started to use different mapping skills. For example, we
are now able to read grid references, use compass points and give directions. We can also read maps and understand the symbols on them too,
most of us designed our own symbols.
In Art, we have been working hard to study the work of Van Gogh. We
have produced our own still life, portraits and landscapes. Our half term
homework will include this too!
Excellent work, Year Four! Keep it up
Miss Brand
TALL OAKS
YEAR 3
What another great term we have
had! This term in Year 3 we have
been learning all about the Rotten
Romans. This has involved looking at
the ruling system, how the Romans
expanded, why the army were so
great, Year 3 even had a go at
marching in legion formation! In Art,
we have looked at a range of Mosaics
and recreated our own using card.
In English, we have been learning all about Perilus and his family
living in the Roman era. We read our first novel in Year 3 which was
a book written by Jeremy Strong called ‘Romans on a Rampage’.
We really enjoyed this book- especially croakbags sense of humour!
We used our knowledge from the text to write a character description of a Roman slave. Also, a Newspaper Report about a huge
chariot race, which shouldn’t have gone ahead, but it did thanks to
Perilus saving the day!
In Numeracy, Year 3 have looked at fractions. This included counting in tenths, finding and writing fractions of a
discrete set of objects, comparing and ordering
fractions with the same denominator. Also, adding and subtracting
fractions and then solving lots of really tricky
problems! Next we have being working on our
statistic skills, we have interpreted and presented data
using bar charts, pictograms and tables.
Year 3 can also solve one and two-step questions.
What a busy half term we have had, have a fantastic half term, get
rested up and see you back ready for Term 4!
YEAR 2
As always, we’ve had a very busy term!
Our literacy focus on Julia Donaldson has enabled the children to produce some wonderful pieces of work. We have researched and found
about this famous author, which we then wrote into a piece of nonfiction as well as some amazing character descriptions.
In maths we have done lots of practical sessions to explore fractions
and measurement. The children have made good progress.
After half term, we will be learning about shape and statistics, including
different charts and graphs.
Our English will be based around the book ‘The Secret Garden’. The
children in Year 2 will be taking their SATs during May and so reading
stamina and being able to comprehend a text will really support them
in preparation for this.
In Science, we will be learning about plants and growing and in RE we
will be finding out about the Christian festival of Easter.
Have a wonderful half term.
With thanks
Mrs Copson & Sue.
RECEPTION
This term has flown by. We have made great progress in all areas of our learning
and have been involved in some super child- led projects.
We have learnt all about:
Space and the different Planets.
Chinese New Year
How to make yummy cakes and Rock Buns
The children fully enjoyed learning about Space. See if your child can remember any
facts about some of the Planets. We made our own Spaceships and Rockets and
learnt all about Gravity and why Astronauts wear special clothing to protect them.
We used ICT to find out more about our world and the different features of Planet
Earth.
We celebrated Chinese New Year by creating our own Chinese Dragon puppet and
then used it as part of our Chinese dance. We ate Chinese food. We really enjoyed
the Spring rolls. We even tried to use chopsticks!
Our ‘Disgusting Sandwich’ storybook has proven to be a very popular story, especially with the boys! We made our own disgusting sandwiches, which we couldn’t
eat, but then Hayley helped us to make some cakes and Rock Buns to make up for
it!
What a busy term J
Thank you for your support
Reception Team
YEAR 1
Christmas seems like the blink of an eye ago, we’ve been zooming ahead on our
topic “I Need a Hero” where everything has been superhero themed. In English
we’ve embraced this by finding out about the structure of a story, we’ve used story mountains to plan a shared superhero story about Fire Boy overcoming his
weakness of water to defeat Electric Man and we’ve also planned and written an
exciting superhero adventure of our own. We know that all stories need a beginning, middle, problem and an ending and have used some great sentence openers too. We’ve looked at using adjectives to describe settings and characters and
have explored different punctuation such as exclamation marks and ellipsis to make our writing more interesting.
In Science we’ve investigated our Everyday Materials
topic. We understand and can use key vocabulary
such as transparent, opaque, absorbent, waterproof,
rough, soft, smooth and shiny. We can tell the difference between materials and objects and can give examples of their properties. We also undertook an investigation to find a suitable waterproof cape for Fire
Boy. We looked at different materials and tested them
with water to see which would be the best material for
the cape. We decided a bin liner was the perfect
choice! Our History topic was Toys and we’ve been
finding out all about past and present toys each week.
We also had a special focus on Victorian toys. We
know that some toys are still around and are the same
as children played with 100 years ago!
In Maths we have been looking at multiplication and
division this half term. We’ve been practicing our 2’s,
5’s and 10 times tables and are getting really good at
them. We have used repeated addition, sharing,
grouping, arrays and a number line to multiply and divide and are great at choosing the correct strategy to help solve a problem. Some of us still need to keep
practicing number formation as we still have some backwards 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, 6’s, 7’s
and 9’s!
We’ve also been working on becoming more independent in the classroom and
would like to ask parents where possible to drop off at the door or in the cloakroom in the mornings. We’d also like to allow all children to change for PE by
themselves with little or no adult support. We’re halfway through Year 1 now and
very grown up with it! Have a wonderful half term break and we’ll see you refreshed and ready to begin a new topic on Monday 20th February.
