All candidates for the B. Kenneth Simon Free Enterprise Scholarship must complete a research paper between 2,500 and 3,000 words on the subject:
“Fifty-five delegates crafted the U.S. Constitution at a convention in Philadelphia in 1787. These men identified themselves as lawyers, planters,
merchants, businessmen, physicians, inventors and politicians. They included Elbridge Gerry from Massachusetts, James Wilson from Pennsylvania
and John Rutledge from South Carolina. Discuss the contributions these three men made at the Constitutional Convention. For each of them, discuss
the manner in which his family background, educational background, trade or profession, and residence in a particular state affected his views on
the proper provisions to include in the Constitution.“(See application packet for more information.)
The research paper must include footnotes, references to sources and a bibliography page. A checklist will be provided to all
applicants at the mandatory orientation session on Thursday, March 13, 2008
