To Our Patients:
At Isthmus Eye Care we are passionate about serving our community. Our mission is to
enhance the awareness of not only eye health, but general health as well. Your eyes can
give clues of health complications elsewhere in your body, which is why we approach our
eye examinations with a whole-health perspective and believe in educating our patients
about healthy lifestyles.
In our effort to better serve our community, we are participating in two upcoming events
that are very important to both our doctors and staff. We want to invite you to join us in
supporting the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance Whisper Walk & 5K on September 22,
as well as the World Sight Day Challenge on October 10. Please read on for additional

Whisper Walk & 5K: September 22
Dr. Scott Jens, partner at Isthmus Eye Care, lost his mother, Pam Wilhelmsen, to ovarian
cancer on September 1, 2012. In the four-plus years from her diagnosis to that day, Dr.
Jens committed to her that he would join her in increasing awareness of this "whispering"
women's cancer. It is a very silent cancer that whispers its symptoms to women who
suffer, by bloating, indigestion, frequent urination or feeling full. Over 80% of new cases
are diagnosed at Stage 3 or 4, and his mom was diagnosed with stage 3C. Today, the
Isthmus Eye Care team is pleased to support Dr. Jens' efforts to educate about ovarian
cancer and is happy to announce the first-ever Madison fundraising event sponsored by
the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance. To see Pam's story and to register for

World Sight Day Challenge: October 10
How You Can Help
The World Sight Day Challenge is the
largest annual global fundraising
campaign to address avoidable blindness.
Optometric offices worldwide will celebrate
World Sight Day on Thursday, October 10.
This year, we invite you to celebrate with
us the entire week starting October 7.
During that week you can donate by
calling or stopping at either Isthmus Eye
Care clinic. Each dollar you donate will be
matched by the Isthmus Eye Care doctors.
Our goal this year is to raise $500. Please
help us transform lives through the gift of
vision.

What Is Optometry Giving Sight?
More than 600 million people around the
world are blind or vision impaired because
they do not have access to an eye
examination and glasses. Your donations
allow Optometry Giving Sight to fund the
solution by supporting programs that train
local eye care professionals, establish
vision centers for sustainability and deliver
eye care and low cost glasses.
Sight can make the difference between a
life of poverty and a life of opportunity.
Since 2007, Optometry Giving Sight has
distributed funding to more than 60
projects in 38 countries including Uganda,
Afghanistan, India, East Timor, Peru,
