grocery shopping - Imagine Education Australia

GROCERY SHOPPING
Everyone needs to eat, right? We thought we'd pitch Australia's top three
supermarkets against each other to see which one came out on top in terms of price,
quality, and variety of food. We took our list to Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi and
bought the same 10 items at each store and the results might surprise you!
OUR LIST:
Loaf of wholemeal bread; 3L milk; 12 free range eggs; coffee; toothpaste;
500g beef mince; baked beans; 2 minute noodles; chocolate; toilet paper
COLES (Australia Fair)
WOOLWORTHS (Australia Fair)
ALDI (Southport Park)
First impressions? Nice big store, but can
be quite busy during the middle of the day
(lunchtime rush). There is lots to choose
from, including an international section
featuring foods from various countries
around the world. The fresh fruit and
vegetable section is small and so is the
bakery, but the essentials are all there.
First impressions? The Australia Fair store
is bigger than Coles, with a larger variety of
fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and bakery
products available. It is, however, in a busier
location and can become quite crowded
during the lunchtime rush-hour.
First impressions? Located across the road
from the Main Campus but external to the
shopping centre. Aldi isn't as big as Coles
or Woolworths and doesn't stock as many
of the brand-name items. You have to pay
$2 to use a trolley (which is refunded to you
upon return) and you have to pack your own
grocery bags – but the waiting time at the
checkout is not as long as Coles or Woollies.

Comments: Most prices are quite
comparable to Woolworths but coffee is
more expensive (and coffee is an essential
for any student!)
Comments: Overall, the cost was very
similar to Coles, but the variety available in
store was by far better at Woolworths.
Comments: While you don't get the same
brand-name items at Aldi as you'd find in
Coles or Woolworths, the quality is still high
and the price is the best.
