MV MUSEUM AND JFK HYANNIS MUSEUM PRESENT
TWO DAYS IN JUNE: JFK AND THE 48 HOURS THAT MADE HISTORY
Thursday, July 21st at 5:30pm at the Federated Church
Edgartown, MA—July 6, 2016 — The MV Museum in collaboration with the JFK Hyannis Museum is
welcoming author Andrew Cohen to the Island to present Two Days in June: JFK and the 48 Hours that
Made History. Island resident, writer, and longtime Kennedy friend Rose Styron will introduce and moderate
the talk.
Looking back at John F. Kennedy’s presidency, two issues dominated the country whose effects are still felt
today: nuclear arms and civil rights. Andrew Cohen tackles both of these in Two Days in June as he explores
two speeches JFK gave in June of 1963. His speech on June 10th led to the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
of 1963, while his speech on June 11th led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Using newly uncovered
documentary film from the White House and the Justice Department, recently gathered interviews, and a
resurfaced draft speech, Cohen takes the 1,036 days in JFK’s presidency and focuses on two of them.
Andrew Cohen is a professor of journalism and communication at Carleton University in Ottawa as well as a
journalist and best selling author. Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Cohen pursued undergraduate and
graduate studies at McGill University, Carleton, and the University of Cambridge. He has worked for United
Press International, Time, The Globe and Mail, The Financial Post, and The Financial Times of London.
Cohen has authored numerous books, many of them best sellers, and has won two National Newspaper
Awards and three National Magazine Awards.
Rose Styron is a poet, journalist, and human rights activist. She has authored numerous volumes of poetry,
and in 2012 wrote Selected Letters of William Styron, which compiled over 1,000 of her husband’s letters.
Rose has been an advocate for human rights for decades serving on the board of many NGOs including
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, The Reebok Human Rights Foundation, The Lawyers
Committee For Human Rights, Equality Now and the Project on Justice. She lives full time on the Island and
is a longtime friend of the Kennedy family.
Andrew Cohen will present Two Days in June: JFK and the 48 Hours the Made History on Thursday, July
21st at 5:30pm at the Federated Church: 45 South Summer Street, Edgartown. Admission is $15. Patron
