From The Principal - Denise Lockrey
Term 3 commences Tuesday July 19 for students
Monday July 18 the teachers at Wentworthville will be engaging in Professional learning at
Pendle Hill High School with our colleagues from all the schools in our Toongabbie Learning
Community. We will be learning about change and how to most effectively manage that within
the framework of our changing educational environment. No students come to school on
Monday July 18 as it is a Staff Development Day.
The next day – TUESDAY JULY 19, we welcome all our students back to WPS in readiness for a
wonderful term of learning.
Staffing News
Our newly appointed Senior Admin Manager Mrs Lynn Deuis started last week and is settling
into Wentworthville well. Ms Noni Kiernan, our new class teacher of 1-4H visited on Monday and
enjoyed meeting the students and spending time with Mrs Hussain with a class briefing and
handover. Ms Kiernan will commence teaching 1-4H at the beginning of term three.
The other exciting news (but sad for Wentworthville) is that Mrs Vanessa Rogers has been
successful at Merit Selection and will be commencing term three, 2016 as the new Deputy
Principal at Jasper Road Public School. Mrs Rogers has been a valuable teacher and leader at
WPS for the last eleven years and I have personally benefitted from her leadership as I have
settled in as the new principal at WPS. She has contributed greatly to the school and her calm
and considered manner will be missed. I am sure you will join me in congratulating Mrs Rogers on
her achievement. Our loss is Jasper Road’s gain. We wish Mrs Rogers all the very best as she
starts her new role and continues her professional journey.
New Class 1/2N
After careful planning, consultation and logistics the newly formed stage one class started as
1/2N on Monday! Ms Brittany McDermid is very excited to be the teacher of 1/2N for terms
three and four and the students are settling in well to their new learning space. Some photos of
the move – furniture arriving, being sorted and 1/2N settling in.
School Captains welcome Ms Owens (Member for Parramatta) and receive flags
for our school!
On June 9 our school captains and Mrs Eastwood welcomed our local member Ms Julie Owens MP
to our school as they had written her a letter requesting brand new flags – Australian,
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. These flags will fly with pride when we get our
current flag poles fixed! Well done captains!
Multicultural Public Speaking Competition
Two students Zahra and Isaac represented our school in such a positive manner recently at the
Multicultural Public Speaking competition. I was so proud of their speeches. I asked them if
they would be willing for me to publish their speech for you all to be impressed with the calibre
of their speeches! Well done students.
The following speech is from Zahra who presented a speech on Bullying
“I will be telling you a story about my great, great grandma Jamila that has got to do with bullying - ‘’SO LETS GET
STARTED’’
One Day, Jamila went for a holiday in Turkey. She decided to go shopping. She bought all different sorts of things for
her family in Africa.
Suddenly a random man came out of nowhere and said ‘’Madam do you need help’’ Jamila said “No thank you’’ but the
man kept on following her.
The next day Jamila went shopping again and the man was still there. Then he said’’ Madam today at 9:30pm there will
be a free dancing show in Istanbul” so Jamila said ’I will be there ere straight away thank you’’ Meanwhile it was
9:20pm so she took a train to Istanbul . When she reached Istanbul there was not even one sound except a cricket
chirping.
Then Jamila thought to herself “I have a feeling that man was lying to me. Just because I am from Africa and don’t
have the same skin colour as him”.
So she had to go back to the train station and wait for the next train. The End.
Now that is my story how about yours? Now I will tell you about 2 forms of bullying. First one is Racism then cyber
bullying.
Firstly racism is a form of multicultural bullying. Racism is a form of bullying when people bully you about your culture,
religion, or even skin colour.
An example of racism was used on the news. Does anyone remember the hostage at the Lindt café? Well since that
happened millions of people have been racist to people who are Muslim.
Just because of a few Muslim terrorists that attacked the café! Well anyway let’s move on to the next form of
bullying, which is called cyber bullying.
Cyber bullying is when people bully you on the internet or social media. Cyber bullying makes people scared and hurt. It
can also make people feel depressed.
Did you know that bullies of any type bully you because they are probably jealous and want to be like you? Also just to
let you know bullies start out like nobody.
I remember I used to have a friend who was being bullied every month. So that’s why I know it’s a very bad and painful
thing. I you ever do get bullied ignore them and play with someone else.
In conclusion I strongly believe that bullying is a very bad thing and shouldn’t even exist. If it didn’t everyone would be
happy. No one should bully each other to create peace.
Be strong put your head up high and to stop bullying and remember bullying is everyone’s business  Thank you  “

Sport In Schools Australia - Term 3 Program
As part of our school’s strategic directions and in consultation with the staff we are relaunching
our wellbeing programs within our school this year (PBL and KidsMatter). The school received
some Wellbeing funds from the Department that enables us to use moneys flexibly to support
out students in a range of ways and increasing learning outcomes. We have used part of the
funds this year to implement the Sport in Schools social skills program. This program will be
conducted each Wednesday in term three (except for Wednesday July 27 –which is our
school’s athletics carnival). In consultation with the Principal at Toongabbie East, Miss Colleen
Potter, I have invited some of their stage two and three students to also join us during the
program. Toongabbie East PS is part of our Toongabbie Learning Community and we are building
positive links between the two schools.
SiSA - Social Skills Program
The Social Skills Program is an initiative that supports values education and character
behaviours. The program has been designed in recognition of the generational change of social
interaction amongst primary school children. In the “technology & indoor generation” this
program is a direct response to the current indoor focus of play and interaction and focuses on
the development and consequences of good social skills.
The program offers a unique experience for students to participate in a wide range of team
building and co-operative learning activities. With an improvement in Social Skills, students will
be armed with social skills that will allow them to strengthen interpersonal relationships and
facilitate success in the school. The positive consequences of improved Social Skills include ·
Positive and safe learning environment
·
Student resilience in tough times
·
Students who seek appropriate and safe avenues for aggression
and frustration
·
Students who take personal responsibility for promoting school
safety
·
Improved peer negotiation / problem solving
·
Active listening and communicating
Our program delivers a practical based program to support and re-inforce the theory based
programs of PBL, Bounce Back, You Can Do it, Kids Matter. Delivered utilising an outdoor,
engaging learning experience, the learning outcomes of the Social Skills program can be applied
across all K-6 students and the improved social skill and behaviour have a direct correlation with
broader educational outcomes and learnings. Underpinned by the be a recognition that students
who engage in practical based learning retain a much higher percentage of learning outcomes,
the Social Skills program aims to compliment any classroom based positive learning / Social
Skills theory and allow student to put that into practice. The program is delivered using
specialised equipment that gets children interacting in a fear free environment (no competition).
Kindergarten Enrolments
We are accepting enrolments for Kindergarten 2017. If you know of anyone who intends to enrol
their child at WPS in Kindergarten next year, please let them know that now is an ideal time to
have forms lodged. This allows time to commence planning for next year and communicate about
transition dates and assists us knowing how many Kindergarten students will be joining us in
2017.

History and Geography
This semester, your child's report will identify two new Key Learning Areas; History and
Geography. Report comments for both History and Geography will be located within the broader
title of Human Society and its Environment (HSIE).
Wentworthville PS teachers are adhering to the mandatory timelines for the implementation of
all new syllabus documents. In 2016 all students have been learning outcomes from the new
History syllabus.
It is important to note that primary schools also have the option to introduce Geography in
2016. It is at the discretion of the school how this occurs. At WentworthvillePS all teachers
have implemented the Geography Syllabus, within the Semester One reporting period.
From 2017 with the mandatory implementation of K–6 Geography all primary schools will be
expected to fully implement all of the new K–10 syllabuses.
Should you have any questions regarding the Semester One Report and the new syllabus
documents and their implementation, please speak with your child's teacher.
