PASTOR’S PEN
Our Gospel reading for today contains a very
interesting confession, twice repeated. The
confession comes from John the Baptist and
concerns Christ: "I confess that I did not recognize
Him." When you stop to consider it, that's a rather
striking statement, coming as it did from the man
who was sent to prepare the way for Jesus. This
was his total commitment, his consuming passion,
his singular mission -- getting people ready for the
coming of Christ. Then, when Christ came, John
says, "I did not recognize Him." A truly remarkable
and interesting confession.
any of it. The Psalmist had a totally different
experience from a much lower vantage point. He
stood in the middle of a Judean desert, looked up
at the night sky and said, "The heavens declare
the glory of God and the firmament shows His
handiwork." The difference is that one man was
looking through eyes trained to see God, and the
other was looking through eyes trained to see
nothing but a material universe.
The training of the eye has a great deal to do with
things that we see and fail to see. So does the
condition of the heart. Some people can look at
a sunset and see God; others can look at the same
sunset and see nothing but the welcome end
of another drab and dreary day. John the
Baptist was a rugged outdoorsman. He lived in
the wilderness and doubtless had many times
seen God in the beauty of a starlit night or the
awesome power of a desert storm. Yet for
some reason, this man who could see God in the
wonders of nature did not recognize Christ in
Jesus of Nazareth. John simply did not expect the
Son of God to look so very much like one of us.
We are still making that same mistake today. We
may occasionally see God in the beauty of nature,
but it seldom occurs to us to look for Christ in plain
ordinary people like ourselves. We can read about
Him in the Bible; we can hear about Him in the
sermon; we can experience Him in the Mass, but if
we will open our eyes, we can see Him in other
people as well.
I have to believe that if that kind of thing could
happen to John the Baptist, it could happen to
nearly anybody. In fact, it happens to us all the
time. Christ walks into our world, but we don't
know it because we fail to recognize Him.
One reason we fail to recognize Him is because we
don't expect Him. This was not the case with the
Baptist. He was waiting on Him, looking for Him,
and still missed Him. So what chance have we got,
when we don't even expect Him? We remember
how He said, "Where two or three are gathered
together in my name, there am I in the midst of
them." But when it comes to expecting Christ to
walk into our world and really be a part of our
lives, that is often one of the furthest thoughts
from our minds. And it can be difficult to recognize
someone whom we do not expect. Our minds are
so filled and preoccupied with other concerns that
there is little room for spiritual awareness. We
seldom if ever look for Christ; and if we do, it's
here at the Church when we attend Mass. But out
on the streets of life, we never see Him; or at least,
if we do, we don't recognize Him, not because He
isn't there, but because we're not looking for Him.
It's very difficult to recognize someone we do not
expect to see.
Whenever we see an act of sacrificial service, in
some small but real way, we are looking at Christ.
Whenever we stand in the presence of human
need, in a very real sense, we are standing in the
presence of Christ. You remember how Jesus said
that when we feed the hungry, we are feeding
Him; when we clothe the naked, we are clothing
Him; when we care for the sick, we are caring for
Him. What we need to realize is that Christ is here
among us, involved in the human drama, revealed
in the lives of plain, ordinary people. And this
presents us with a two-fold challenge. One is to
recognize Him in the lives of others; the other is to
make Him more recognizable in our lives.
Remember the Russian cosmonaut who a few
years ago came back from orbiting the earth and
announced to the press that he did not see God
anywhere. What a pity that a man could fly among
the stars, see the wonders of nature in a way that
few have ever seen them and never see God in

ARCHBISHOP’S CHARITIES AND DEVELOPMENT DRIVE
Your ABCD contribution supports many of the good works done by
the Church for our brothers and sisters in need, including:
58 YEARS OF PARISHES AND MISSIONS
and children to safety and independence. Your gift
resounds throughout our community and gives
hope to those who most need us.
The heart and soul of our Archdiocese are our
parishes and missions. Even before our community
became an Archdiocese, our parishes and
missions served the faithful and reached out
into our communities. Gesu, our first church, was
established in 1896, the same year Miami was
founded, and our latest parish, Blessed John XXIII,
was founded in 2001. Your gift helps to keep the
doors of struggling parishes and fledgling
ministries open to all who wish to enter.
58 YEARS OF ANSWERING THE CALL
The first priests assigned to minister to the faithful
of South Florida reached our shores from Europe
in 1868, and immediately faced the challenges of
multiple languages, races and cultures. St. John
Vianney and St. Vincent de Paul Seminaries have
graduated nearly 1,000 young men and prepared
them for ordination, most of whom remain to
serve the people of our Archdiocese. Your gift
supports our shepherds by providing for them and
forming strong, capable young priests prepared to
serve the faithful.
58 YEARS OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
The Catholic Church in South Florida has been
educating our children with lessons in values and
responsibility since Mary Immaculate School was
established in Key West in 1868. Our schools blend
a faith-centered way of life with a curriculum that
prepares our children for the future. Your gift
in support of schools that serve our poorest
neighborhoods, brings enlightenment to the little
ones who witness the hardships of life around
them.
58 YEARS OF SPIRITUAL FORMATION
Each of us is seeking our path to become one with
God the Father, and along the way, our need to
understand Him blossoms and matures. Ministries
are dedicated to helping the faithful reach this
understanding and have abounded throughout our
Archdiocese since missionaries first arrived in
South Florida in 1567. Your gift enables faith
programs to enhance spiritual life for all of us
through retreats, encounters, and direct ministry,
forming a greater understanding of our faith and
our mission as one body on earth.
58 YEARS OF HELPING THE POOR
Jesus calls on us to care for the poor who are
always with us. Catholics in South Florida have
always supported good works - from the Sisters of
St. Joseph who ministered to former slaves at the
turn of the century through the establishment of
Catholic Charities in 1931 to today’s parish-based
St. Vincent de Paul Society conferences. Working
side by side, the many ministries and services of
the Archdiocese feed the hungry, care for the
afflicted, ill and dying, and lead abused women

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The next session of our Baptism
Preparation Program will be held
on Saturday, January 28.
A BEAUTIFUL THING
As 2017 starts, we often wonder what will the
New Year bring? We are sure some of the
following events will occur in our extended
family…a baby will be born, someone will buy a
new home, others will be financially successful
while others may lose jobs; some will graduate
from high school or college, others may become
desperately ill, and someone will probably die.
The program runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
at the Epiphany Parish Center.
Attendance by the parents
is a pre-requisite to the child’s baptism.
BAPTISM
Life is a circle of events starting at birth. No one
can escape them or try to outsmart them. They
will occur.
How do we cope? What is that
special gift we need to live our lives, when we
are thrown a curve ball striking us out?
Baptism was not over and done with
the day we were taken to the font.
We are baptized by all that happens to us in life.
We are baptized by hardship; in its turbulent
waters we are purified of all that is false and
useless. We are baptized by suffering; in its
gurgling waters we experience the goodness of life.
We are baptized by love; in its singing waters we
blossom like flowers in the sun.
Baptism is like the planting of a seed.
It will take a lifetime for this seed to grow and ripen.
Let me tell you a true story. John Edwards was
the father of four children, ages 17, 15, 12, and
8…all boys. At work, John got a telephone call
from the school his 17-year old was attending.
His son, Johnnie, got into a fight with another
student, and the other student stabbed him with
a knife, and he was in critical condition at St.
Mary’s Hospital.
John rushed to the hospital but only to learn his
son Johnnie was dead.
He went ballistic,
throwing chairs and sweating revenge on the
student who killed his son.
As he cried and
raved, his wife Sarah said “John…stop! I am as
devastated as you are…my heart is broken, and I
am filled with sorrow.
But our other three
children need us now more than ever. Why this
happened we will never know, but unless we put
our trust in God, we will never survive.” They
hugged each other and cried.
Imagine how your life could change if you had
a profound encounter with God in Scripture
and began relating to Him in a personal way.
Fr. Ireneusz invites you to take a journey through
the entire Bible and deep into each period of
salvation history, where you will discover the
amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture.
What saved this family?
Faith! What gives
them the courage to live their lives with this
tragedy? Faith! How did they survive this
devastation? Faith!
REMINDER:
The Gospel According to Mathew
second session of this six-week session
will take place on Thursday, January 19, 2017
from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
in the Parish Center.
If you don’t have faith, you will be miserable all
the days of your life Faith is a gift…don’t ever
lose it or take it for granted. Pray every day
that your faith will grow.
In the circle of life, faith will carry you through
any crisis. Faith--- “A beautiful thing.”

ARCHBISHOP’S CHARITIES & DEVELOPMENT DRIVE
Archbishop Wenski reminds us that we are the Catholic
Community of South Florida that changes lives. Because of our
commitment to share our generosity and faith with others,
Catholic Charities continue to make a difference in the lives of
children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and the poor
through ministries providing help and hope.
Next Sunday is the Archbishop’s Charities Drive. The Archbishop
is inviting all of you to be One in Faith, One in Hope, and One in
Charity for the most abandoned. Your gift will make a difference
in the lives of children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and
the poor.
Most of you have already received a letter from the Archbishop,
and probably have responded directly to him with your pledge
or gift. Those of you who have not, will have the opportunity to
make that pledge on the weekend of January 21-22.
Because of you...
The Archbishop’s Charities Drive changes lives.
