Comprehension Skill: Sequence
Sequence is the order of events in a story. Clue words such
as first, next, then, and finally often indicate sequence. If
events happen at the same time, look for clue words such as
while and during.

Background knowledge is what you already know about a topic
from your reading or from your real-life experience. Use
background knowledge before, during, and after reading to monitor

Literary Terms: Personification
Personification is a figure of speech in which human traits are given
to animals, inanimate objects, or ideas. The traits may include
personality, intelligence, emotion, actions, or speech.
Vocabulary Skill: Word Endings -ed and -ing
Read: Wilderness Camp
An ending is a letter or letters added to the end of a base word. For
example, the endings -ed and -ing can be added to verbs to
change their tense. -ed makes a verb show past action; -ing makes
a verb show ongoing or current action. Sometimes the -ed or -ing
form of a verb is used as an adjective, to describe.
