Helpful Information box • In 1066, the King of England was Edward the Confessor • He died on 5th January and did not have an heir. • Three men wanted to be King: William, Duke of Normandy, Harold Godwinson and Harald Hardraada. 3 Points: What was the name of the hill in the Battle of Hastings? • 3 Points: What does Heir mean? What was it called? • • Harold Godwinson made himself King. Harald Hardraada invaded in the North so Harold had to march up with his army. Harald Hardraada was defeated at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, William, Duke of Normandy had sailed across to England from France and was waiting for Harold. The Battle of Hastings took place on 14th October 1066. Wharold was defeated and William became King of England. Helpful Information Box Why did William win the Battle of Hastings? • Harold Godwinson had already fought a battle against Harald Hardraada • Harold’s men were tired and battle weary. • William’s men had been able to rest and prepare for the battle • William’s men played a clever trick on Harold’s men by pretending to retreat, then turning back. • This made Harold and his men leave their strong position on Senlac Hill. • Some people feared that Harold would lose because Haley’s Comet had appeared in the sky.
