SEPTEMBER 2016 Dear Friends in Christ, The writer of Hebrews, in a section of the letter in which he is calling his readers to persevere in their faith in Christ, wrote: And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV) There is a strong emphasis on supporting and encouraging one another in these verses. Snuggled in the middle of this comment is a phrase I want to focus on: “not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some.” Over the last several months, this space has been focusing on what it means to be a member of St. Paul. We reach a portion of the material on membership in our constitution that is not pleasant to approach— Termination of Membership. Outlined in our constitution are the means by which an individual or household may end their membership of the congregation. The first two are quite simple: 1) transferring to another LCMS congregation; and 2) being released from membership to join a congregation outside of the fellowship of our congregation (a non-LCMS congregation). The other methods are not as simple and certainly not as pleasant to deal with: whereabouts unknown, self-exclusion, and excommunication. While not pleasant to deal with, it is necessary to do from time to time, thus important for us to consider. We will focus on two of those statuses in this writing. According to our constitution, if the address and contact information of a member cannot be established within a six month period, that member shall be removed from the membership list of the congregation and be placed in a file designated “Whereabouts Unknown.” Their membership shall also be terminated in the congregation by action of the Pastor and the Board of Elders and reported to the next regular meeting of the Voters. The congregation cannot minister to an individual or family if the congregation is not able to get in touch with those people. A little more touchy is the “self-exclusion” category. Members who have excluded themselves are defined as those who “has not utilized the means of Grace in Word or Sacrament in the congregation for a period of at least three months.” Those members are to be contacted by the Pastor or 4 It’s brother against sisters when a father’s estate is in limbo. In the midst of grieving their father and settling his estate, the Byler family faces some of life’s hardest challenges—sickness, disaster, loss. When Joel should be stepping up as the man of the family, his selfish determination continues to cause chaos. Can the family pull together , or will the prodigal son defy his father’s last wish and part the family for good? Book 6: The Selfless Act True compassion restores a family and a romance. Joel finally stops running from responsibility for his actions and takes a good long look in the mirror. Seeing how far he has digressed from the man his parents raised, can Joel return to the faith he once held and break the grip money and possessions have had on his life? Will his family and Kristi believe he is able to change after causing them so much pain? The Artisan’s Wife by Judith Miller Delightful Blend of History and Romance Ainslee McKay's world is shaken when she discovers her twin sister has not only eloped with a man she barely knows but now Ainslee must fulfill their obligation at a tile works in Weston, West Virginia. Ainslee must learn the ropes and, if she can keep the tile works profitable, her brother will help her sell the business. When Levi Judson arrives and shows Ainslee his designs for new tiles, she's impressed by his skill and passion for the business. But he's hiding his true reason for coming to Weston. And Ainslee knows he'd be crushed to learn his plans for a long career at McKay Tile Works are in vain since she intends to sell. Can the growing feelings between them survive if the truth comes to light--or is a future together as untenable as the future of the tile works itself? The Executioner’s Redemption by Rev. Tim Carter The wrenching account of one man’s journey from executioner to pastor. When young Tim Carter started working at a prison to make money for college, he didn’t realize that he was signing away his life, his heart, and his very self to a career of brutal violence and routine executions. In the midst of the darkness of prison life, the light of God’s Word shone in front of him. Condemned inmates were brought to faith and given eternal life. Families of inmates and victims took immense comfort in God’s justice and redemption. But inside Carter’s heart, a fierce battle raged. Was he carrying out God’s will by wielding the sword of the state? Or was he actually doing more harm than good? In these pages, you’ll walk with Tim into the violence and through death 9 Hannah Scott, Andrea Huedepohl, Aaron & Jacob Andrew, Kristin, Nathan, Allison & Emma Ward What would we do without our faith in God???? We are blessed!!! IN YOUR CHURCH LIBRARY ~ Adult books—The Amish Millionaire Series books 1—6 by Wanda Brunstetter Book 1 The English Son The Prodigal Son Returns. When Joel Byler turned eighteen he left his Amish roots, but living the good life out in the world requires money, and he finds himself going back home to ask his wealthy and eccentric father for a cash loan—again. How many times can Joel expect to be welcomed back before his father’s patience with him wears thing? Book 2 The Stubborn Father The Amish Millionaire of Holmes County Widower Eustace Byler stands out in his Amish community for his eccentricity and his wealth. He mourns the loss of his son to the world like he mourns the physical loss of his wife. In the past, Eustace has freely loaned Joel money, perhaps hoping to entice him back home, but now Eustace is done and moving on to fulfill some of his own dreams. Can father and son come to an understanding about their different choices in life before time runs out? Book 3 The Betrayed Fiancée Adversity exposes her fiancés flaws. Kristi Palmer thought Joel Byler was the man she would marry, until she suddenly learns he has been hiding a lot from her. He never told her about growing up Amish, but the bigger problem is that he rebelled from all that was good in his upbringing and has put his selfish desires first. Now he has stolen money from their joint account, and she is done with the relationship. Can trust broken ever be mended? Book 4: The Missing Will A Family in turmoil after the death of their Patriarch. The Byler family is on a hunt for the father’s will while relations continue to deteriorate among the siblings and between Joel and his fiancée. Joel is desperate for closure to his father’s estate, but how far is he willing to go to restore the chaotic turn his life has taken? Will his quest ignore the needs of those closest to him? Book 5: The Divided Family 8 an Elder in order to encourage active involvement in the body of Christ through a life of worship. If inactivity persists after a second contact from the congregation, “the member shall be informed that if such continued neglect of the means of grace continues, it shall be interpreted as indifference to church membership, its rights and privileges, and the member shall have, by personal lack of involvement with God’s means of grace, ‘self-excluded’ himself/herself from membership of the congregations along with its rights and privileges.” Our congregation is a portion of the body of Christ that meets in this location. It is important for individual members to be active in that body in order to receive that encouragement and “stirring up” of which we read in Hebrews. That happens in a special way when we gather together for worship. That is why we receive the admonition to not neglect our meeting together. We need all of our members active and involved for the congregation to be its healthiest. The Board of Elders has started discussion in looking at this issue within our congregation. There may be some of our members that we might have to consider “self-excluded” due to lack of involvement in the life of the congregation through worship and the reception of the Lord’s Supper. This is not taken lightly. And to some it might be considered overly harsh. One analogy that I have heard used is one of an athletic team. If a member of the team does not show up for practice on an ongoing basis, no one would expect that team member to be allowed to play in a game that follows. In essence, what a person’s lack of involvement in the worship life of a congregation says—provided there are no extenuating circumstances such as health or other limitations—is that they really do not feel the need nor the desire to be a part of our body. We lament that if that occurs, but it is the reality. Of course, we are always ready and eager to welcome back with open arms any who would re-engage in their worship life, and that is always our aim. If you know of someone that fits this category within our congregation, you are encouraged to encourage them in their life and membership at Paul. It is not a task that should be solely left to the Pastor and Elders. Who knows? You may be the instrument through whom the Lord works to restore a brother or sister in Christ. In Christ, Pastor Ogilvie A Letter of Encouragement to Be Studied 5 The Church often finds herself in trying times. In such times, we within the Church need encouragement. Our Lord knows this and offers that encouragement through His Word. A special—and often mysterious—word of encouragement is found in the book of Revelation. This final book of the Bible—the last prophesy yet to be fulfilled—offers hope and strength for God’s people as they live in the End Times. The Sunday morning Bible study will be engaged in a study of Revelation beginning on Sunday, September 11. All are welcomed and encouraged to join us in the study of this book of the Bible. The Sunday morning Bible study meets in the Chamber Room each week beginning about 10:15 and concluding at 11:15. Sunday School and Teacher Recognition News It is time for Sunday School to start up again! Sunday School classes will begin on September 11th. We will have offerings for students from Pre-K through high school. On Sunday, September 18, we will have a special and exciting RALLY DAY celebration! On the 18th, all Students Pre-K through 8th grade will meet in the Choir Room to start this event! Be ready for singing, games and a balloon launch to celebrate Christ’s love for us! Also on the 18th, we will have our Teacher Recognition for Sunday School, LIS, and public school teachers. All teachers are invited and encouraged to be present for worship that day for a time of recognition and prayer upon the work that you do in your special role as a teacher. Christian Education Sunday Will be in October The scheduling of Education Sundays in our area is being handled differently this year than in previous years. This year, one Sunday a month is being set aside as Education Sunday in one of the congregations in the LIS association. The date for Education Sunday at St. Paul is October 2. We thank everyone involved in the education of our young people. Following worship, there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall in their honor, allowing time for our members to visit with our teachers. Long-Range Planning Continues September 11 We have made progress in the long-range planning process for St. Paul. We have spent time establishing and affirming the basics of our life and work together in this place. Now, it is time to starts laying groundwork for the future of the ministry. As we, with God’s help and guidance, explore how we might most effectively carry out our ministry in the Gospel, we will be setting 6 directions for years to come. For this to be most effective, in addition to God’s help, we need the help of as many members of our congregation as possible. Members of all ages and all levels of involvement are asked to take part. It is especially important that we have people in congregational leadership positions present for this meeting. TOGETHER IN THE WORD. We have completed one round of reading through the Bible. That does not mean we are done with the Bible, however. We can never read through the Bible too many times. Thus, we begin again, and we go back to the beginning. To understand who we are as human beings, it is necessary to understand creation and covenant—two blessings God freely gives us. Our reading through 16 Genesis 27 & 28 the book of Genesis will give us an 17 Genesis 29 & 30 understanding of these concepts. 18 Genesis 31 19 Genesis 32 & 33 January 1 Genesis 1 & 2 20 Genesis 34 2 Genesis 3 21 Genesis 35 & 36 3 Genesis 4 &5 22 Genesis 37 & 38 4 Genesis 6, 7 & 8 23 Genesis 39 & 40 5 Genesis 9 24 Genesis 41 6 Genesis 10 & 11 25 Genesis 42 & 43 7 Genesis 12 26 Genesis 44 & 45 8 Genesis 13 & 14 27 Genesis 46 & 47 9 Genesis 15 & 16 28 Genesis 48 10 Genesis 17 & 18 29 Genesis 49 11 Genesis 19 30 Genesis 50 12 Genesis 20 & 21 13 Genesis 22 & 23 14 Genesis 24 15 Genesis 25 & 26 The family of Shelly Brecht want to thank all of our St Paul's church family and beyond when she had her heart issue for your phone calls, inquiries, thoughts and prayers.
