The legend of Jimmy’s Rope
By: Nature John
By: Annie J. • Teepee
First thing last Monday morning they
shouted from the horse barn, “Help! We have
a MONSTER here.” It turned out that they
found a Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar – a
ferocious looking five inch green critter with
black spines all along its back and large horns
on back of its head. Once it pupates, it will
emerge as a Royal Walnut Moth. As the week
progressed, the caterpillar began to shrink
from 5 to 2 ½”. Then it crawled out of its
skin and changed colors from green to yellow, white and finally to black and it is now a
cocoon. We hope to see it emerge as the moth.
Several weeks ago we saw several green
caterpillars wrap themselves in leaves and
seal the openings. They are now hatching into
beautiful Luna Moths. We had the latest one
hatch on Wednesday during lunch hour. When
they are strong enough, we release them.
This week as usual, kids found many crawdads (also known as crayfish)
In the small aquarium we have a small
frog, many crayfish, and a 12” water snake
that likes to rest on a stick. On Wednesday,
Log Cabin camper Max Pruitt caught his first
fish ever and Archer Heeren caught a rather
large blue mouth fish. On Thursday, Parker
Friton caught the first cat fish of the summer.
It’s currently residing in the Nature Museum.
One day Counselor Kris caught a 46”
Black Rat snake. He transported it to the Nature Museum in a Lost and Found bin. I transferred it to the medium size aquarium. Within
a half hour or less that snake started slithering
out of the aquarium and in among the logs
of the museum wall. I grabbed hold of the
posterior 12”and tried to pull it back out. I
could not budge it. I could only see about 2
inches of the snake in a space between two
logs and even that was gone when I returned
from lunch.
A long time go a camper named Jimmy went tree climbing and did not tie any safety knots and he slid all the way
down and died. And he was buried in a mound with all his
stuff; helmet to rope. It might be true, it might not… just
the counselors know. Part of his rope is still up there. If you
touch it you’ll be cursed for ten years. It’s really high up and
I touched it. I may be cursed for ten years or I may not.
Farm Update
By: Farmer Fred
Support your local farmer- lower your carbon footprint.
The Whippoorwill organic garden is mere yards from where
the campers prepare and feast on the bounty of the earth. The
potatoes and beans have produced wonderfully. The tomatoes were late. Everything is tasty. A raccoon has devastated
the corn. Eat your okra!

Leadership Challenge!
For the past two weeks, ten brave, headstrong, vivacious
high-schoolers have been living in the loft above the horse
barn. Unlike other campers, these children, enrolled in the
Leadership Challenge Program, have gone through rigorous
get-to-know-you games, violent name games, and one excruciatingly beautiful day spent on the Harpeth River.
Each camper has learned invaluable lessons on the importance of leadership while simultaneously empower these
skills in real-life settings. After several in-house and guest
lectures each camper will leave Whippoorwill as strong, confident leaders capable of leading any person, place, or thing
they will ever come across. We had the BEST time this week
and will miss you all terribly!

This week at camp was zoo week. Campers
dressed up as their favorite animals on Thursday and
participated in a costume contest. Counselor Kris
brought his pet yellow belly slider turtles to show the
camp and Vince the Log Cabin counselor brought his
pet python, Monty to camp for a day.
On Friday, Walden’s Puddle a rescue and rehabilitation center in Joelton TN came to visit. They talked
about rescuing animals and even brought some critters out to show our campers. For more information
about Walden’s Puddle, visit their website at www.

Addison’s Alien Name
By: Luke Lapre • Teepee
If you’ve been in Teepee you know Addison has
many nicknamed. It’s like he doesn’t know what to
call himself. That’s because he is an alien with an
alien name! His real name is “Muhama Junga-Junga!!” So this is what I want you to do. Call the cops
and S.W.A.T. and arrest Addison. Together, we can
end world hunger.
The garden
By: Hart • Log Cabin
In the garden you see flowers of all kinds, vegetables and corn. A lot of insects live in it. There is
a tree and a scarecrow in there too. The garden is a
very nice place.

Whippoorwill is so fun. I am a camper!
I saw a worm and I saw a snake and I
went on a scavenger hunt.
Teepee campers, Roy C. and Molly N and Leadership Challenge par tic pant, Laura B. made cards
for Jett the dog and Barrett the Marine who are both
in Afghanistan serving our country. Barrett was a
former counselor at camp. Camp Whippoorwill has
been raising money all summer to send care packages to the 3rd battalion 4th Marines kilo company.
Our second care package will be mailed out next
week and will include homemade pickles and blackberry jam from camp, chap-stick, homemade cookies, beef jerky and powdered gatorade. Thank you
campers and families for a summer of support!
