Expositional Preaching from the Authorized Version of the Holy Bible
2016 VISION: Faithful in little things!
Current Book: The Gospel According to Mark – Message 60
Scriptures for Today: Mark 12:35-44 – Tuesday (Jesus’ last days); David, Scribes, a Widow
Title of Today’s Message:
Warnings and a Widow – The common people heard him gladly!
INTRODUCTION
Last week, we saw Jesus answer immediately after the greatest commandment with the SECOND greatest
commandment – to love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the
prophets! Today, we will finish chapter 12 with a question related to the Son of David, WARNINGS about
religious people, and a life lesson from an unlikely person – a certain poor WIDOW. We will be challenged to
trust our PRESENT and our FUTURE to our Lord. If we say we trust Him, then it is time for us to live by faith.
PREACHING NOTES
1. Jesus taught in the temple about the Christ, and the COMMON people heard Him gladly.
 Jesus asked how Christ (Messiah) could be the son of David and also be his Lord.
Matthew 22:41-42
Luke 20:41-44
Psalm 110:1
NOTE
“Jesus asked them, saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he?”
“How say they that Christ is David’s son? And David himself saith in the book of Psalms…”
“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy
footstool.”
In the OT economy, a Jewish father would never call his son, “Lord.” The father’s words
were to be revered and obeyed as lord of the home. The scribes taught (and Jews believed)
that Christ was to be the son of David. They must not have reconciled how that would work.
 The Son of David was present teaching on the Son of David…and the religious men missed Him.
Acts 2:33-36
Hebrews 10:11-13
NOTE
“David is not ascended…but he saith himself, “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my
right hand, Until I make thy foes thy footstool. Therefore, let all the house of Israel know
assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
“And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices,
which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for
ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be
made his footstool.”
What a thought! Jesus was teaching DOCTRINE that was to come to pass in just a few days!
As with all the Passover lambs that week, Jesus was being inspected as the perfect Lamb of
God. The common people heard him gladly. The religious leaders wanted to kill Him!
2. Jesus then told the people to BEWARE of the scribes which love preeminence and power.
 The doctrine of Jesus (sound form of teaching) included warnings of false religious leaders.
Matthew 23
“Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying, The scribes and the
Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and
do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens
and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not
move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men…And
call no man your father upon the earth, for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be
ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ…Woe…Woe…Woe…Woe…Woe...”

NOTE
May 29, 2016
In Matthew 23, Jesus preached 8 “Woes” to the religious leaders, but His heart for Israel
was revealed in verses 37-39, “O Jerusalem…how often would I have gathered thy children
together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”
3. Jesus then beheld how people cast money into the treasury – the widow cast in ALL her living.
 Jesus beheld all the people and money that was cast into the treasury – the offerings of God.
Luke 21:1-2
Proverbs 5:21
Proverbs 15:3
NOTE
“And he looked up, and saw the rich men…And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in”
“For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.”
“The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.”
In the Bible, God chose to record and preserve these words for us. Jesus knows all things,
and He knows every detail of our lives – even the very number of hairs on our head!
 As with the words of warning, Jesus took this opportunity to teach the disciples a key truth.
Luke 20:45
Mark 12:43
John 7:24
NOTE
“Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, Beware…”
“And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you…”
“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”
Jesus thought this truth was important to teach His disciples. We often judge incorrectly
based on the appearance of things. However, God looks on the heart and sees the motive.
 To Jesus, the poor widow had cast in more than all the others combined!
Luke 21:3
NOTE
“And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all”
Now that is not what we would expect for Jesus to say! There must be more to this story.
 Jesus said the others had cast in of their abundance, but she of her want – all her living.
2 Corinthians 9:7
2 Corinthians 8:2-3
Luke 21:4
NOTE
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of
necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
“How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty
abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and
beyond their power they were willing of themselves;”
“For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her
penury hath cast in all the living that she had.”
According to Webster’s 1828 Dictionary, “penury” means extreme poverty. This woman is
an example to all who trust Christ. It has been well said, “Not equal gifts, but equal
sacrifice.” As Lord, Jesus owns everything in our wallet and in our possession. Amen?
 Jesus focused not on the amount, but rather on the sacrifice and faith by which she gave.
Proverbs 3:5
1 Timothy 6:17
Revelation 3:14-22
Proverbs 27:1
NOTE
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain
riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;”
“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write…thou art lukewarm…I will spue
thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have
need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and
blind, and naked…As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”
“Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”
God connects our faith in Him to our money. He knows us better than we know ourselves.
This widow in her extreme poverty and with her sacrificial gift into the offerings of God was
saying, “I trust God more than this money!” Wow, what a thought! Lord help our unbelief!
