This is our fourth summer season as a swim team in the Metrolina League. If this is your first summer with us, we look forward to getting to know you. If you are returning, we hope you will find that we offer some of the fun you enjoyed from past seasons along with a few new things to try out this time around. Backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle make up all of the four competitive strokes. Swimmers – don't worry if you can't yet do all of the strokes, we are here to help you learn. It is our hope that you will improve each of your strokes so that you can improve your performances at the meets. Swimmers will be practicing at specific practices based on their age and in specific lanes based on their abilities. When swimmers work harder and swim faster, they might move up to a faster lane. All swimmers will be expected to bring cap, goggles and fins to all practices (we supply kickboards and pull buoys). Head Coach: Cynthia Roeth Assistant Coach: TBD This great handbook was originally designed by Coach Katie Bayag. I am so impressed with her layout and content that I have only updated it for this year. And from what I hear, Coach Katie has promised to stop in and see us along the way, which we all welcome as we embark upon another season together. If you have any further questions, please email me or a member of the Parent Executive Committee. Let's have a safe and fun swim adventure together! —Thanks, Coach Cynthia •Thepalisadessports Jr. Coaches: TBD Please bring your goggles, cap, fins and water bottle to ALL practices! c o m p le x • 13417 G r a n d P a lis a d e s Pa r k w a y • C h a r l o t t e , N C 2 8 2 7 8 • Palisades Swim Team Handbook 2013 SWIM TEAM INDIVIDUAL RECORDS 6 & U N D ERS GIRLS YEAR TIME EVENT BOYS YEAR TIME Eva Pocci 2011 24.03 25 Freestyle Derek Van 2011 27.47 Colin Roop 2011 34.68 Doren Eva Pocci 2011 27.93 25 Backstroke 7 & 8 GIRLS YEAR TIME EVENT BOYS YEAR TIME Alondra 2011 16.76 25 Freestyle Zane Zielinski 2011 15.62 2011 22.45 25 Backstroke Zane Zielinski 2011 22.88 Morgan Kidd 2011 27.16 25 Breaststroke Zane Zielinski 2011 22.25 Alondra 2011 20.65 25 Butterfly Zane Zielinski 2011 18.38 Nieves Alondra Nieves Nieves 9 & 10 GIRLS YEAR TIME EVENT BOYS YEAR TIME Isabelle 2011 16.69 25 Freestyle William 2011 18.64 2011 23.4 2011 2.05.19 2011 24.54 2011 28.53 Percoco Delaini Nagy Trowbridge 2011 23.45 25 Backstroke William Trowbridge Isabelle 2011 1.42.69 Percoco Isabelle 2011 23.76 100 Individual William Medley Trowbridge 25 Breaststroke Percoco Ann Mason William Trowbridge 2011 23.2 25 Butterfly Nico Fano McConnell •Thepalisadessports c o m p le x • 13417 G r a n d P a lis a d e s Pa r k w a y • C h a r l o t t e , N C 2 8 2 7 8 • Palisades Swim Team Handbook 2013 SWIM TEAM INDIVIDUAL RECORDS 11 & 12 GIRLS YEAR TIME EVENT BOYS YEAR TIME Emily Phillips 2011 33.73 50 Freestyle Eldon Graham 2011 34.23 Hannah Grimm 2011 41.01 50 Backstroke Zac Zielinski 2011 37.89 Emily Phillips 2011 1.32.78 100 Individual Zac Zielinski 2011 1.36.45 Medley Haden 2011 48.25 50 Breaststroke Eldon Graham 2011 44.12 2011 39.12 50 Butterfly Eldon Graham 2011 41.38 McCarter Haden McCarter 13 & 14 GIRLS YEAR TIME EVENT BOYS YEAR TIME Bailey Ellis 2011 28.4 50 Freestyle Tyler Boozer 2011 28.34 Bailey Ellis 2011 39.5 50 Backstroke Tyler Boozer 2011 34.77 Courtney Forbis 2011 1.19.53 100 Individual Tanner Mann 2011 1.30.88 Medley Courtney Forbis 2011 41.35 50 Breaststroke Tyler Boozer 2011 36.45 Courtney Forbis 2011 36.08 50 Butterfly Tyler Boozer 2011 33.03 BOYS YEAR TIME Charles 2011 24.94 2011 32.67 2011 1.05.96 2011 33.31 2011 28.46 15 - 18 GIRLS YEAR TIME EVENT N/A N/A N/A 50 Freestyle Graham Stephanie 2011 30.4 50 Backstroke Bayag Stephanie Graham 2011 1.08.88 Bayag N/A Charles N/A N/A 100 Individual Charles Medley Graham 50 Breaststroke Charles Graham Stephanie 2011 29.19 50 Butterfly Drew Walker Bayag •Thepalisadessports c o m p le x • 13417 G r a n d P a lis a d e s Pa r k w a y • C h a r l o t t e , N C 2 8 2 7 8 • Palisades Swim Team Handbook 2013 KEY CONTACT INFORMATION CO A CHES Position Name Phone Number Email Address Head Coach Cynthia Roeth (704) 840-7501 [email protected] Assistant Coach TBD PARENT E X E C U T I V E C OMM ITTEE Position Name Phone Number Email Address President Leah Trowbridge 704-201-2001 [email protected] Vice President/League Tracie Zielinski 704-999-1067 [email protected] Secretary Teresa Fano 704-953-3173 [email protected] Treasurer Kris Hopkins Fundraising Brittany Padgett 803-322-4759 [email protected] Volunteers Lu Gibbs 704-560-7660 [email protected] Club Liaison Dorthe Havmoeller 305-528-4966 [email protected] Swimsuits & Apparel Teresa Fano See Above See Above Representative Volunteer Staff ALL SWIM TEAM PARENTS Registration Fees MAKE ALL CHECKS PAYABLE TO: PALISADES PIRANHAS SWIM TEAM Palisades Country Club Member 1 Swimmer Each Additional Swimmer $100 $75 Each Non-Members 1 swimmer Each Additional Swimmer $125 $100 Each ***Be sure to check out the Summer Swim Team Membership deal now being offered*** •Thepalisadessports c o m p le x • 13417 G r a n d P a lis a d e s Pa r k w a y • C h a r l o t t e , N C 2 8 2 7 8 • Palisades Swim Team Handbook 2013 POLICIES & PROCEDURES 1. Swimmers 10 and under must be able to swim the length of the pool unassisted with forward motion. Swimmers 11 and up must be able to swim 2 lengths unassisted with forward motion. For the safety of all swimmers in the Metrolina League, we will not allow in water assistance at swim meets. 2. Fees are non refundable except for those 6 & under who cannot swim the length of the pool. 3. Our youngest swimmers are referred to as “Shrimps” in the league. This is the 6 and under age group. For safety reasons, parents of shrimps are required to be at the pool at all times when their child is in the water. It takes more effort and attention to ensure the safety of these little ones. If the parent is not present, the child will not be allowed to enter the pool. 4. Without parent volunteers, this team is not possible. All parents are required to sign up and fulfill volunteer positions for five half meets plus either the invitational or championship meet (depending on where your child is placed). 5. Practice is VERY important. We need all swimmers to attend their scheduled practice time so that the coach can help them reach their potential in the sport. If you are unable to attend any practice, please notify the coach. A prize may be given out at the end of the year for those swimmers with perfect attendance. 6. Many parents like to “coach” their children from the side of the pool, sometimes giving incorrect information. We ask that parents refrain from “coaching” their children during practice time. Please let the coaches do their jobs. 7. Please do not take practice time away from our swimmers in order to talk with the •Thepalisadessports coaching staff. The coaches need to give their full attention to our swimmers. Please speak to the coaches outside of practice time. Email is the best way to reach them. 8. PLEASE ADVISE THE HEAD COACH, IN WRITING, IF YOUR SWIMMER WILL MISS ANY SWIM MEET BY 9:00 AM THE EVENING PRIOR TO THE MEET. This is very important. The coaches spend many hours planning for a swim meet. If your child is entered in an event and does not show up, it affects all paperwork for running the meet. Also, not letting the coaches know about your absence or leaving a swim meet early may cause us to scratch a relay. This means that three other swimmers who were in the relay with your child will not be able to swim. 9. If your children would like input on their swims, please, come see one or all of the coaches after each swim. We can give your children tips that will help them drop time on their next swim. As coaches, we have the best view of each swim. Sometimes we can help the average swimmer improve more than the best swimmer. We are here to help everyone compete at his or her best. 10. In case of severe weather, please always check the team website, www.palisadespiranhas.com, before assuming a meet or a practice has been cancelled. If it is not thundering/lightening, we will still be swimming!!! Also come prepared with dry land apparel (shorts, t-shirts, socks, shoes, etc.) to all practices. If we are forced to get out of the pool at any time during a practice due to weather, we will be doing some dry land activities. This year we hope to meet indoors at the sports complex, even in bad weather, to watch videos and do dry land activities together. c o m p le x • 13417 G r a n d P a lis a d e s Pa r k w a y • C h a r l o t t e , N C 2 8 2 7 8 • Palisades Swim Team Handbook 2013 PRACTICE SCHEDULE We will practice Monday through Thursday with various optional practices on Saturday mornings. The order of events are listed below: o Medley Relays o Freestyle o Backstroke o Individual Medley o Breaststroke o Butterfly o Freestyle Relays Each age group breaks down each event, and each age group is broken down into male and female events. The age groups are listed below: o 6 & Unders (only swimming the freestyle and backstroke) o 7-8 o 9-10 o 11-12 o 13-14 o 15-18 There are two relays, a medley and freestyle. There are two age groups for relays, 10 & under and 18 & under. o The Metrolina League rules state that the 10 & under relay must consist of 1-4 swimmers from the 7 & 8 age group and no more than 2 swimmers from 9-10 age group. o The Metrolina League rules state that the 18 & under relay must consist of 1-4 swimmers from 1112 age group, no more than 2 swimmers from the 13-14 age group, and no more than 1 swimmer from the 15-18 age group. Because most pools have only 6 lanes, only 6 swimmers will participate in an event at one time. Each event is broken down into heats, determined by the swimmers’ times. Therefore, each swimmer is placed within a heat with the closest times of other swimmers. Please keep in mind that only the top six swimmers overall in each event will receive a place ribbon. This means that your swimmer may win his or her heat, receiving a heat ribbon, but someone in another heat may swim a faster time. Invitational Meet and Championship Meet All swimmers will have an opportunity to participate in either the invitational or championship meet, but not both. Please let the coach know if your vacation schedules conflict with either of these meets. The order of events follows the same order as a dual meet. However, at the championship, each team is limited to three swimmers per event. This means that the top three fastest participants in each event will qualify to participate in the championship meet. All other swimmers have the opportunity to swim in the invitational meet. Swim suit, swim caps, and goggles. Having extras on hand is helpful. Towels. More then one per swimmer. Team T-shirt and Sweatshirts Suntan lotion and bug spray. Our meets start while the sun is still high in the sky and end just as the mosquitoes come out. 5. Small, quiet games. Recommended items are cards to play and small games like scattergories, battleship, and connect four. These types of items are great for kids to play with their friends. 6. Folding chairs for parents and blanket/rubber mat (doesn’t get soaking wet) or a chair for swimmers. 7. Food to occupy your child. If you want your swimmers to swim their best in a meet, consider the following food suggestions before and during meets. All food for competitions should be high in carbohydrate and low in fat. Before and during the meets, fried foods and heavily spiced foods should be avoided. Make sure your swimmers stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Swimmers who are not properly hydrated or fed cannot swim fast and may even get sick. a. Suggested Snacks During Meets: Fresh Fruit Bagels Rice Cakes Plain Pasta/Noodles Yogurt Juice Sports Drinks WATER Crackers Peanut Butter Baked Potatoes Graham Crackers Cheerios Granola Bars Fruit Snacks Pretzels 8. Helpful Notes for Parents and Swimmers a. Swim meets are supposed to be fun!!! Please respect yourself, teammates, coaches and parents – Strive for personal goals – Commit to your team and yourself to be the best swimmer you can be – and of course bring all the team SPIRIT you can. GO PIRANAHS!!!! b. Disqualifications (DQ’s) are not meant to dishearten swimmers. DQ’s serve as a learning experience for all swimmers. I know it’s hard to believe but even Michael Phelps has been DQed at some point in his swimming career. But he took his disqualifications and learned how to do it better for next time. c. Any male swimmer without a buzz cut must wear a cap. d. Parents please make every effort to have your swimmer at practice and meets on time. e. Realize that your child is working very hard. Give them and the team all the support that you can. f. Swimsuits need to be washed out in cold water and hung out to dry. DO NOT wash suits in the washing machine or put them in the dryer. •Thepalisadessports c o m p le x • 13417 G r a n d P a lis a d e s Pa r k w a y • C h a r l o t t e , N C 2 8 2 7 8 • Palisades Swim Team Handbook 2013 LEAGUE POOL LOCATIONS Directions to the Palisades: From Uptown or South Charlotte • Take I-77 south to Carowinds Boulevard. • Turn right on Carowinds Boulevard. • Turn left on Tryon (Hwy 49).Follow Tryon (Hwy 49) for approximately 4.6 miles. There were many questions as to what these numbers mean. I hope to explain this as easily as I can for those who are new to a swim team and meets. The E ( ) located on the hand below stands for the Event in which a swimmer is swimming. Events are always called out in numbers. Boys events are always even numbers and girls events are always odd numbers. The H ( ) stands for the Heat. There can be one heat for each event or multiple heats for each event. The number of heats depends on the number of swimmers swimming that particular event. The L ( ) stands for the Lane the swimmer is in. The number of lanes differ from pool to pool. The Landing has 5 lanes where as the Palisades have 6. The pictures below show examples of different places your child can have their numbers written on. E # 22 #42 # 58 •Thepalisadessports H 4 1 6 L 5 2 2 E # 22 # 42 # 58 H 4 1 6 L 5 2 2 c o m p le x • 13417 G r a n d P a lis a d e s Pa r k w a y • C h a r l o t t e , N C 2 8 2 7 8 • Palisades Swim Team Handbook 2013 H E L P F U L I N F O R M A T I O N CONTINUED Relays Another thing we had questions on were the medley relays. Medley relays are swam in the following order…Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Freestyle. The medley relay is swam differently then the Individual Medley (which only one swimmer swims by themselves). The Heat sheet is read left to right The first swimmer is the Backstroker and will always be listed first, since they are in the water first. o After the Backstroker the next person listed is the Breaststroker. o Bennett Garcia is swimming breaststroke in the example above. Next is the Butterflyer. o Je’Len Wilkins is swimming backstroke in the example above. Lance Wilson is swimming butterfly in the example above. And last is the Freestyler. o Addison Garcia is swimming freestyle in the example above. When writing relays numbers on swimmers hands, we advise you to write the event number, heat number, lane number, AND the number in which the swimmers swims in the relay. For example, in the picture above, we would write on Addison’s hand E 2, H 1, L 2, 3rd. Addison is swimming butterfly, which is third in any medley relay. Backstrokers would be 1st, Breaststrokers would be 2nd, Butterflyers would be 3rd, and Freestylers would be 4th. There is also a Freestyle Relay at the end of each meet. We advise you to again write the number in which the swimmer is swimming, but they need to realize that it is a freestyle relay and all members in the relay will ALL be swimming freestyle. •Thepalisadessports c o m p le x • 13417 G r a n d P a lis a d e s Pa r k w a y • C h a r l o t t e , N C 2 8 2 7 8 •
