July 2015 Roseburg Country Club Newsletter Inside this issue: President’s Report Membership Committee 2 Seniors Report 2 Golf Committee 3 Well we have just completed the Abby’s Invitational Tournament. We here at RCC are fortu- Greens Report 3 nate to host this best in class event. We were pleased to receive hearty accolades from our sponsors and Membership Report 4 really owe the success of this tournament to the dedicated staff at RCC along with our many amazing Handicap Committee 4 Pro Shop Report 5 Nif Tee Niners 5 By Dennis Dietrich volunteers that continue to donate of themselves and their time to help our club in any way they can. I’d like to give a hearty shout out to Tamara and her staff in the restaurant for their fine performance, Ryan and his kitchen crew were also complimented by the Abby’s Chef, Tom Smith for really knowing their job well. Richard and his crew with the help of many volunteers had the course in the best shape I’ve ever seen. Jeff and the Pro Shop staff along with Nancy and many more volunteers ran a very smooth Board of Directors tournament. President: Dennis Dietrich Along with the other two of our Big Three, the Clint Newell and Josh Bidwell, our tournament Vice Pres: Tony DiMare revenues were down following a national trend of less golf play and tournament participation. Curt and Secretary: Linda Kerl the Membership Committee have been working extremely hard to add members and have had some good Treasurer: Rick Holland success. This is helpful but doesn’t solve our financial obligations. Your board has been working to try Hap Huffman additional avenues for revenue. The Golf Committee performed an in depth study of course play and Curt Sandfort discovered very little occurred after 1:30 pm. As we continue to try and abstain from a dues increase and/ Steve Bennett or assessment to our members the RCC Board has approved a temporary program we will call the 2015 Steve Barnhart EARLY TWILIGHT GOLF at RCC. This pr ogr am will be something completely new to all of us Craig Jackson and will run from July 1st thru October 31st 2015. We are truly trying to make every effort make some much needed revenue without impacting our members. I will layout a rough outline below while Rick Holland, Jeff Bright and the Golf Committee iron out the details and refine this experimental program. Restaurant Hours Summer Hours Monday: 10am-5pm Our members would, of course still have first preference and would continue to be able to make tee times seven days in advance. The twilight open play would only be available Monday thru Fri- Snack Menu day after 1:30 pm subject to course availability and members requests first. Tee times could only be Tuesday: 10am-8pm Lunch/Casual Dining menu made two days in advance. The open play green fee for this play would be $35 and $30 for carts. There would also be a rate for nine holes as well. Wednesday: 10am-10pm Lunch/Casual Dining menu Thursday: 10am-10pm Lunch/Casual Dining menu Friday: 10am-10pm Lunch/Casual Dining menu Saturday: 6am-10pm Breakfast, Lunch/Casual Dining menu Sunday: 6am-8pm Breakfast, Lunch/Casual Dining menu For Reservations call: 541-672-5566 Ext. 4 This idea is member driven and has been suggested by many of our members over the last few years. Your board listening and we hope to implement any solid ideas to give them a try. We’re all in this together and we would like to invite your thoughts, comments and suggestions for new approaches as we all face this financial crisis. We researched other clubs utilizing this model or something similar and decided as a board to implement it on a trial basis. It is our hope to also possibly attract a few additional members. It’s getting really hot out there…please stay hydrated! Cheers, DD R O S E B U R G Page 2 C O U N T R Y C L U B Membership Committee By Curt Sandfort Happy Summer Everyone, and just a quick update from the Membership Committee. We have been hard at work trying to increase our ranks---especially with new golfers. I would have to say that we have been moderately successful at generating new memberships, but not nearly what we would like to see. As we look back at a few years past, in 2010 we ended the year with roughly 335 golf memberships (regular, intermediate, etc…) In 2011 we ended at 279 – a big drop, but then leveled off for a bit with 277 in 2012 and 271 in 2013. However, we ended 2014 with just 236 – and that is why we had the open house, and we offered 3 months free, but still have had modest results. We are currently targeting more corporate members and a special thanks to Steve Bennett, Dan Hern, and Hank Snow for volunteering their time to work on that. So, we are making progress, I just have higher expectations! When we have looked back at what has worked before, one of the more successful Membership Drives was the “Buddy Program”. We have decided to resurrect and “tweak” this program, and it starts immediately. I call it “Buddy Program Part Deux”. We want current members to recruit their buddies to become members, so we are offering a $25 credit towards the members dues and the New members dues for a 1 year period (12 months). If you are currently paying $249 and you recruit a “buddy” that is regularly $249, then each of you would pay $224 per month for the next 12 months. There is no limit to how many members you may recruit under this program, and it is currently set to expire 12/31/2015. Your dues will not go “negative”, meaning if you currently pay $249/mo and recruit 15 members, RCC will cap your “credit” at $249/mo. If your Buddy fails to mention you at the time they signed their contract with Marya…there will not be a credit given….No exceptions. There are other details of course, so if you have questions, please call myself or Marya! We are also working on creating a new Family Night….a time for the kids (of any age) to play a few holes at ANY pace of play they need, perhaps get some tips on the range, enjoy a movie, etc. If you have suggestions about what you think will work well on Family Night, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. RCC Senior Golf Association Larry Rooker Our sixth tournament of 2015 was a Chapman that was held on Friday June 26th. The winners were: GROSS: Jim Trowbridge and Gus Meehl with 79. NET: DeWayne Sills and Gary Dykeman with 62. Congratulations to all the winners! RCC Men’s Senior Golf Assoc. is open to all members of RCC over age 50. Annual dues are a modest $65, but are now prorated to $45 since we’ve completed five of our tournaments. There are two dinners to go and six more tournaments. Your dues cover the costs of the dinners and all tournament prize money. What a great bargain! To join or renew in the Senior Golf Association just give a check to our Treasurer Fritz, or Marya in the Club office. We also administer the Gangsome that plays every M-W-F mornings at 9:00 AM and which is open to all adult members and guests. No membership fee is required to play with the Gangsome , just a $3 pot fee. At the conclusion of play the pot is equally divided between the winners of the front, back and total net scores. Come on out, meet the folks and have some fun! R o s e b u r g C o u n t r y C l u b Page 3 GOLF COMMITTEE Chairman Rick Holland Early Twilight Golf Open Play Program The Board passed a limited public play program that is scheduled to start July 1 st. The reasons we are doing this: We may be able to reach players our normal membership efforts have not. If people play a few times they may decide to look into joining. The big reason is that through green Fees and cart rentals it may help us bring in extra cash to help us meet our financial goals as we outlined in the annual meetings in 2014 and 2015. What is the PROGRAM? The Early Twilight Golf Open Play program will run from 7/1/15 to 10/31/15 After 1:30 pm on Monday through Fridays only. Holidays are excluded. Open play must yield for any membership usage and be managed the same as any other play. They must adhere to all of our rules of use and dress code. Prime time golf is for regular members and their guests. That is before 1:30 pm Monday through Friday and Saturday and Sundays. Regular guest rules apply at regular rates and each play counts to the 6 time usage. It should be noted that if people play after 1:30 in our program that does not count against their normal 6 annual plays for the year. Remember this program only runs until 10-31-15. The fees will be $35 for 18 holes and $17.50 for 9 holes. Carts will be $30 for 18 and $15 for 9. Single players $15 for 18 and $7.50 for 9 holes. These players will be able to purchase food and beverages in the 19 th hole on the day that they play. GOLF CART TRAIL FEES The board also passed daily trail fees for use of private carts also effective 7/1/15. These fees apply to the public players using the course during the Early Twilight Open Play Program. IT ALSO APLLIES TO ALL MEMBERS ANY TIME. Members that trailer their carts or drive their carts to the course can either pay the Daily fee or sign up for our annual trail fee program at $225 per year. They may also choose to store their carts at RCC. The fee for both storage and trail fees is $450 per year. The daily fee is $25 per day. Some exceptions may apply for certain tournaments. From the Greens, By Richard Weight, Golf Course Superintendent Happy Independence Day! On behalf of the Roseburg Country Club Greens Department we would like to thank all the sponsors and volunteers of the 2015 Abby’s Invitational for their generous support of this fantastic event. We always look forward to hosting this great event every year. Special thanks goes out to all the volunteers for helping the greens crew get the course ready for the Abby’s Invitational. The additional help made a huge difference in getting the course ready for tournament play. Once again, it is the involvement from our membership that makes the Roseburg Country Club the best club in the state. We appreciate the extra effort from all our volunteers, Thank You. I would like to this opportunity to give special recognition to one of our golf members; Kyle Miller DMD of Murphy and Miller Dental, LLC. Mr. Miller went above and beyond the act of generosity when he performed oral surgery, free of charge, for one of our members on the greens staff who was suffering greatly and desperate for help. Mr. Miller, your act of kindness and generosity has not gone unnoticed, and I sincerely thank you. By the time you read this article we will have completed the overdue face lift to our Maintenance buildings. We had a number of volunteers come out and help with the painting and then enjoyed a fantastic BBQ for our volunteers and greens staff. I want to say thank you to everyone who helped, our buildings look great!! With the results from the score cards entered, we can now update our Handicap Stroke Allocation. New Score cards will be available as of 7-16-15 with updated Handicap per hole as per the program provided by Oregon Golf Association. This allocation will update all tees for the ladies and men. Going forward the Handicap Committee members, Neal Brown, Patty, Sherry, and I will be selecting cards to review for posting. We will randomly select days of play from the tee starting sheet in the Pro shop. In the event a player has played and not posted, the Handicap committee will enter a score of PAR for the missing round. Post all scores after playing nine holes or 18 holes. Drop your score card in a drop box provided in 19th hole or by the Handicap computer outside the Pro Shop. On your score card: Check Tees Played, Place date of play on card, Sign and place First Name and Last Name of ALL players on the card, then drop in one of the boxes provided. Have Fun!
