Thank you to those parents who have sent in

The whole school show, ‘Vaudeville’ is under
four weeks away now. Rehearsals are going really
well and tickets are going fast, so contact the box
office if you would like to come to the show of the
year. You will not be disappointed.
We have had a large number of families looking
around the school in preparation for choosing a
secondary school for next September. The comments
received from them have been incredibly positive as
always and they love the learning environment here.
On Thursday we held our biennial Whole School
Photograph. This gets harder to complete each time
due to the growth in size of the school. However, as
always our students were perfect and I am sure the
photograph will be another outstanding memento to
cherish.
We have ongoing issues with some parents
parking in challenging places whilst waiting to
collect their children at the end of the day. The roads
around the school service a number of buses and
these have to be able to get through without
obstruction. If you do need to collect your child by
car, I would be most grateful if you could park a little
further away from the school gates and the top end of
Skyswood Road. Remember also that there are parking restrictions in certain places and the traffic
wardens will be out on a regular basis to police these.
Thank you for your help.
May I wish everyone a very enjoyable half term
holiday and I look forward to seeing you all back
safely on Monday 31st October.

HOUSE WHO’S WHO
Name: Sar ah Jackson
How long have you been Head of House? This is
my 3rd year
Which clubs/activities did you take part in at
school? I used to be par t of Histor y society wher e
we used to read different history articles and talk
about them over cake!
What are your current interests and activities
outside of school? I do genuinely love a good
museum - particularly living history ones such as
Beamish or Stansted Mountfitchet. I have always
been extremely unsporty but have set my aim on the
fun run next year (to get more house points for
Erikson!) so I am currently running twice a week.
What is your happiest memory from when you
were at school? Going on a Histor y tr ip to Russia.
As well as getting to see the sights of the Russian
Revolution (one of my top two favourite topics
in history) we got to overnight on a train from St
Petersburg to Moscow.
Which three words would you use to describe
yourself? Passionate, Har dwor king, Determined
What’s the best thing about your House? The
students. I have worked with so many amazingly
talented and creative students it genuinely blows my
mind. I cannot believe the dedication of some of
Erikson and the hours of effort they put in. You guys
make me so proud!
Please report A LL absences before 9:15am on
the first day of absence. This should be followed
up by a letter on return.
Which House event are you looking forward to
most this year? House Ar ts. It is a LOT of har d
work but the performances are truly amazing.
Stuart Kemp, Assistant Headteacher
In one sentence, what words of encouragement
would you offer students in your House this year?
Whether you a dancer, musician, mathematician,
spelling-bee enthusiast, house-point collector or just
like
making
cake...
you
can
make
this an unbe'leif'able year for Erikson!

D of E Silver Practice Expedition
Dates for the Calendar
D of E Presentation Evening:
Thursday 23rd February 2017
Our expedition season for 2016 came to a close this
weekend with a highly successful expedition to the
South Downs. Forty nine Year 11 students (our biggest
Silver group ever) met at school early on Saturday
morning for a prompt departure heading for Sussex and
the South Downs. The terrain on Day 1 was largely low
level heath and farm land. The overnight camp at
Plumpton Scout camp was somewhat wet but the
participants coped well, striking camp early on Sunday
morning for a hike up on to Ditchling Beacon and
along the South Downs way for most of the groups.
Gold Training Expedition:
Thursday 30th March- Saturday 1st April 2017
(Year 12)
The views were spectacular and the rain held off all
day although the wind was consistent in strength but
not in direction, shifting from South Easterly to South
Westerly as groups made their way along the Downs.
Night 2 at Park Wood Scout Camp was drier in the
evening with a very bright full moon which soon
disappeared under the rain clouds which provided some
heavy showers overnight. Day 3 started much like Day
2 with some heavy rain but again the day cleared up
well as all groups made their way along the Downs
again , this time over Edburton Hill to Devil’s Dyke for
the finish.
Gold Practice Expedition:
All the staff on the trip were impressed by the
positive attitude shown by all the participants and I was
particularly delighted by the fact that so many of them
commented on how much they enjoyed their
experiences, in spite of the rain, the mud, the heavy
bags and the steep hills. I would like to thank Mr
Swann, Mr Hassett, Mr Allday, Mrs Gibson and Mr
Hopkins who gave up their time over the weekend to
support the expedition- their experience and expertise
was invaluable to the students. Well done to all the
participants- I am extremely proud of you and you were
great ambassadors for the school but also for the
Award.
Bronze Training Walk:
Monday 8th May 2017 3.15-6.00 (Yr10)
Bronze Practice Expedition:
Friday 19th-Saturday 20th May 2017 (Yr10)
Bronze Qualifying Expedition:
Friday 9th- Saturday 10th June 2017(Yr10)
Monday 19th-Friday 23rd June 2017
Silver Qualifying Expedition:
Sunday 25th-Tuesday 27th June 2017 (Yr11)
Gold Qualifying Expedition:
Friday 7th- Wednesday 12th July 2017
D of E Presentation Evening:
Thursday 23rd February 2017
Participants who have been working towards their
Bronze, Silver & Gold Awards over the past 12 months
should be uploaded their evidence to their eDofE
accounts. I will be checking accounts over the next few
weeks and submitting completed Awards to County for
verification in preparation for our Presentation evening
next February. Can I please ask that parents support and
encourage participants to upload their assessor reports as I
cannot approve Awards until all evidence has been
submitted.
Please
contact
me
on
[email protected] if you have any difficulty
in uploading the necessary evidence.
New Bronze Participants
All new Bronze participants in Year 10 should be
busy uploading the details of their activities to eDofE. If
you are having any problems, please do not hesitate to
contact me. Participants should also start thinking about
expedition groups which should be between 4 and 7 in
size. I will be requesting group names shortly after half
term.

Spanish Exchange Trip
It is fair to say that it was an amazing, unforgettable
trip,
and we were all very sad to leave. I learnt so much
From the 5th to the 12th of October, 36 about and experienced a totally different culture, whilst
Sandringham students visited Seville in Spain to take greatly improving my Spanish language skills and
part in an exchange trip with students from ‘Colegio making friends for life.

week. A huge thank you to Miss Unsain for organising
the trip and also to Ms Lyons and Miss Stothard for lookOnce we arrived at Seville Airport on ing after us when we were out there.
Wednesday, we were warmly greeted by the families
Lucy Grubb - Year 13
who had created a banner for us and had waited in
arrivals to greet us. We then spent the evening
getting to know our families.
On Thursday, we spent the day at school,
beginning with a welcome breakfast of churros and
melted chocolate in the canteen and then a welcome
ceremony where speeches were made and the
national anthems were played. We got to experience
being students at a Spanish school and how the
school compares and contrasts to Sandringham. The
school day was significantly longer than at Sandringham, starting at 9am and finishing at 5.30pm. After
school, we spent the evening with our Spanish
family.
On Friday, both the Sandringham pupils and their
exchange partners took an excursion to the stunning
nearby Andalusian coastal city of Cadíz. We spent
time on the beach which included games of beach
volleyball and football, and then we headed through
the narrow, cobbled streets to look at the beautiful,
grand Cathedral of Cadíz. Afterwards, we had some
time to look round the shops and cafés before
heading back to Seville.
We spent the weekend with our families and had
lots of fun. For example, some people travelled over
the border into Portugal and had a day at the beach.
Others stayed in Seville and visited the many
intriguing sights such as the Plaza de España, which
has been featured in many films such as Star Wars:
Attack of the Clones, and the Seville Cathedral,
which is the third largest church in the world.
On Monday, we had another day at school, in
which we had special Spanish lessons in the morning
On Tuesday, we visited the city of Córdoba for
the day and looked round its famous, intriguing
Mosque-Cathedral, which is actually a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. It is defined as a Visigothic
Catholic Cathedral but is divided into Muslim and
Christian halves. Afterwards, we had time to look
round the surrounding area which included souvenir
shops and cafés.
On the last day, we spent time with our Spanish
families for the final time. They took us to the
airport, and after a group picture, we had to say our
goodbyes which was very sad.

Pop Music Quiz – THANK YOU
“Oh, what a night. Late December back in ’63” or
in our case mid-October in 2016! A massive thanks to
Nick Grubb, our superb Music Quiz Master, and his
family for a pop-tastic evening last Friday. This was our
first music quiz and we had an amazing turnout. Everyone who came along had a fantastic time and helped
raise in excess of £1,250 which is staggering, thank you.
As part of our programme of eSafety education, we
partner with ParentZone who specialise in making online
safety understandable and accessible to parents. Children
in Year 7 had an assembly on Tuesday this week and
were all given a printed copy of Digital Parenting

on issues such as gaming, developing digital resilience
and advice on cyberbullying. We would encourage other
parents to access the magazine via ParentZone at;

Tesco has shortlisted a local schools initiative, the
Alban Way Carer Project, for an environment grant
funded by the 5p plastic bag levy. It’s for a community
garden retreat behind Camp School, one of the five
schools in the Alban Way Community Network. It will
be used out of hours by unpaid family carers of people
with support needs and disabilities and by the children
when the school’s open.
The Camp Community Group put the project
together and will be running a programme of outdoorbased workshops and networking events for carers too.
There’s a chance to vote for the shortlisted projects in
local stores, including St Peter’s Street and Hatfield
Road from 31 October to 13 November, and the Camp
School team would be very grateful for your support.

A number of the key committee members (Chair,

years at the helm and Fo$S will cease to exist if new
post holders do not come forward. Whilst I appreciate
that parents have many other commitments, I would ask
you to consider if this is something you could do with a
group of friends and therefore share the responsibilities.
Please join us, everyone is welcome, and it’s a great way
to meet other parents whilst having your say as to where
the money we raise through fundraising events is spent
across the Faculty bids.

Year 8s had a treat on Thursday 13th October, when
Sarah Crossan spoke to the whole year group. Her talk was
very interesting and enlightening and resulted in many
students borrowing her books (before and after the talk)
and over £80 –worth of her books being bought by year 8
students. She often writes in poetic prose and gave a
wonderful dramatic performance of a scene form Romeo
and Juliet to bring the story to life.

Student reviews
On Monday 11th October, we took part in the
Last House Standing Year 7 singing competition.
I'd been waiting all day to perform, I had mixed
feelings of being terrified but also excited to see
what it would be like. Finally lunchtime arrived
and we all went into the SandPit waiting for it to
start. It was a very nerve wracking experience,
waiting for your turn to perform and watching the
other forms produce amazing performances. When
we had to go on I could hardly breath I was so
nervous, I couldn't stop thinking I'd forget the
words or something. I can't really describe the feeling of being on stage in front of our entire year
group, I can say it was terrifying but it was also
really amazing having all the support of everyone
else. During our performance, I was so petrified I
could feel my hands shaking. However when we
finished everyone applauded, the feeling of everyone clapping for you and your form is amazing.
After all the forms had performed I was amazed by
some of them, it was time to hear the results. I was
on the edge of my seat half thinking that I knew
some of the other forms were incredible and deserved to win but I also wanted to win. In the end,
we didn't come in the top three. Seacole won, I
think they deserved to as they produced an award
winning performance.
Lucy Topp 7E
On Monday the 17th everyone took part in the Year 7
Last Choir Standing house competition. We were all a
mixture of excitement and nerves as the whole of Year
7 were watching. We had to go there straight away
carrying our lunches. During the performance I could tell
we sang together and the soloists sang very strongly. We
were all listening intently after the happy end of the competition with VG singing ‘Happy’. In the end the three best
were announced, Seacole with a magnificent
win. Although we missed out the chance of winning we
can all be proud of our performance even so.

Also on Thursday the Y8 Football team played

hopes of having a good run again in the cup this
season. Leventhorpe were a very tough
opposition and it took extra time for the boys to earn the
win, but eventually we overcame the opposition 2

throughout the rest of the season.
On Saturday the Y7,8 and 9 Rugby teams faced
up against Nicholas Breakspear School. The Y7
team again showed a superb early display
demonstrating much talent and potential for this year
overcoming the opposition 5 tries to 2. In the Y8 game
the low numbers of the opposition didn’t stop all enjoying the game and a 35-15 win was another statement for
the strong side. The Y9’s continued their unbeaten run
and took victory 63-12 with Jack Kelly scoring 4.
The Year 9 Girls Basketball team went to the district
basketball tournament this week. All of the girls fought
extremely hard in all 6 round robin games against the
local schools. Only losing to Beaumont, the girls placed
second and consequently progress through to the county
tournament later in the year. Stand out performances
came from Emily Pollard and Amalie Newman-Booth.
The Senior Girls Netball Team had a match against
Roundwood Park School, a team who they had closely
lost their previous two meetings against. Understandably, our girls were fired up and ready to go. Everyone
played amazingly well, with some fabulous defence,
causing the ball to be turned over numerous times and
some excellent shooting. A special mention must go to
player of the match, Chloe Pettengell, who was truly
outstanding and whose unwavering leadership skills,
kept the girls motivated throughout the match. The final
score was 21-14, meaning the girls are currently unbeaten in the District League.
The Y10 Rugby team after a recent win against

the duration, however with some injuries and a slightly
weakened team were unable to overcome the opposition
eventually losing to the better team on the day.
Two weeks ago the Boys swimming team took part
in the Eastern Region Relay Champs at Woodside in
Watford. This is a very prestigious and high standard of
swimming that brings the best teams from across the
area. The junior, inter and Senior teams all performed
well and have given the school the first marker at this
level. The teams consisted of Ollie Carpenter, Tudor
Ursache, Hector Ali, James Small, Ryan Hussain, Zak
Mohammedbhai, Jo Hirst, George Jones, Felix Ali,
Alasdair Mitchell, Ben Muckleston, Matt Small, Tom
Sear and Ewan Langford. Well done to all the boys who
