PROGRAMME
Hynek Martinec: The Birth of Tragedies
Hynek Martinec's second exhibition at Parafin develops his work’s ongoing engagement with art history
and his search for visual connections between diverse historical moments. Martinec’s paintings and
drawings explore ideas about time, history, reality and spirituality, often appropriating imagery from
vintage photographs and the Old Masters, and these new works have been developed in response to
an invitation from the National Gallery in Prague to respond to the museum's Baroque collection.

The Life & Death Of Puppet King Richard II: BowerBird Prague
King Richard faces a great reckoning in a little cell. The one-time golden boy is tarnished. He can’t stop
crying or talking, in his ragged prison walls. Did he go, or was he pushed? Voices, choices, gilded loam
and painted clay – who was pulling his strings? And if the King isn’t in charge, then who is?!

Journey to the Interior
A multi-sensory participatory performance involving food, inspired by George Bellas Greenough, (1778
– 1855), a geologist and a founder of the Geological Society of London, and Jules Verne’s Journey to
the Centre of the Earth. Using themes of geology and the uniqueness of the particular London location
(Kensal Green cemetery) as the core concept, the performance aims to explore the space beyond the
visible, through an intriguing dialogue between sensory impressions and our imagination’s ability to
elaborate and construct inner worlds. Every participant will therefore become an explorer along the
journey of their own imagination.

In celebration of translation
Sales of translated fiction in the UK have soared in recent years. Once deemed to be a niche interest of
the cultured elite, the improved visibility of translated literature, and of translators themselves, has
signalled a welcome move to the mainstream. Yet despite this progress, the number of translated titles
on sale in the UK remains low. Join the panel as they discuss the positive shift in sales and attitudes,
current industry challenges, and their hopes for the years ahead.

Such is Life + live musical accompaniment by Miloš Orson
Štědroň
This beautiful digitally restored version of Such is Life represents the pinnacle of European silent era
filmmaking. Director Carl Junghans captures the tragic tale of an aging laundress whose profligate
husband, a brutal alcoholic, takes advantage of her labours. Bold editing, reminiscent of a Soviet
cinematic aesthetic, creates its own emotive and symbolic rhythm, advancing the movie’s social aspects
- the wrath of marital bickering, frantic dancing on a pub table, and the burden of destiny.
