General Guideline for creating a Flyer (Chapter 1):
Choose the right words for the text
Identify how to format various elements of the text
Find the appropriate graphical images
Establish where to position and how to format the graphical images
Determine whether the page needs enhancements (borders or spacing)
Correct errors and revise the document as necessary
Determine the best method for distributing the document
Flyer:
Organize in three areas: Headline, body and signature line
Headline: first line of text and conveys the product or service being offered.
Body: All text between the headline and signature line. It highlights the key points of the message in few
Signature line: Contact information or identifies a call of action, also, it is the line of text on the flyer.
Default Preview:
Print Layout: is the default view, it shows the document in a mock sheet of paper in the document
window.
Formatting character or nonprinting character:
A character that is displayed on the screen but not visible on a printed document
Formatting character each time the Enter key is pressed
Raised dot (.) is displayed each time the spacebar key is pressed
Wordwrap:
Word wrapping allows you to type continuously without pressing the Enter key at the end of each line.
Word create a new paragraph each time the Enter key is pressed so it is recommended to only press the
Enter in the following circumstances:
To insert a new line
To begin a new paragraph
To terminate a short line of text
To respond to questions or prompts (dialog boxes, task panes, and other on-screen objects)
Spelling and Grammar Check:
Word automatically checks for possibly typing and grammar errors. A blue check mark icon on the status
bar means the grammar is correct. A red X icon in the status bar means there is a potential grammar error,
then Word flags the word in red, green, or blue wavy underline.
Red wavy underline means word is not in the dictionary
Green wavy underline means the text may be grammatically incorrect
Blue wavy underline means the text may contain a contextual errors such a misuse of
homophones (word that are pronounce the same but different meaning).
Formatting characters:
Paragraph formatting: process of changing the appearance of a paragraph
Character formatting: process of changing the appearance in how character appears on the screen and in
print
Dark letters and light background (Default setting)
Font or typeface: defines the appearance and shape of letters, numbers, and special characters (Default is
Calibri)
Font size: specifies the size of the character and its unit of measurement is point. A point is about 1/72 of
one inch in height (Default Font size is 11)
Document Theme: set of unified formats for fonts, colors, and graphics (default theme is Cambria)
Shading: is the process of coloring the rectangular area behind a text or graphic
Bulleted list: is a series of paragraphs, each beginning with a bullet character
Color scheme: is a document theme that identifies 12 complimentary colors for text, background, accents,
and links in a document. There are more than 20 predefine color schemes.
Resizing: Enlarging or reducing the size of a graphic either by using the sizing handles or entering the
exact measurements.
Selection rectangle: a selected graphic which has small squares and circles called sizing handles, at each
corner and middle location
Picture Style: is a group of formatting characteristics, there are more than 25 picture styles that allows to
easily change the appearance of a picture (variety of shapes, angles, borders, and reflections)
Picture Effects: to enhances furthermore the appearance of a picture (variety of shadows, glowing, soft
edges, bevel, and 3-D rotations)
Spacing before/after a paragraph
The default spacing above (before) a paragraph is 0 pt. and below (after) is 10 pts.
Types of modifications made to Documents
Additions: Adding additional words, sentences, or paragraphs
Deletions: The process of removing certain words, sentences, or paragraphs
Modifications: The process of revising certain word(s) in a text and make changes if it is required.
Document Properties
It provides details about a file. The document properties is also known as metadata. Document properties
can include the following: Author’s name, title, subject, and keywords (word or phrase the further
describes the document)
Document Information Panel: contains areas where you can view and enter document properties
