May 18, 2017 Issue Page One “As base a thing as money often is, yet it can be transmuted into everlasting treasure. It can be converted into food for the hungry and clothing for the poor. It can keep a missionary actively winning lost men to the light of the gospel and thus transmute itself into heavenly values. Any temporal possession can be turned into everlasting wealth. Whatever is given to Christ is immediately touched with immortality.” – AW Tozer Money is everything in our culture. We need it to pay our bills, to save for the future, and to put food on the table. It very easily for many becomes an obsession and an idol to be worshipped. Despite it being so significant a piece of our lives we are sometimes hesitant to talk about money in a church setting. Jesus never hesitated to discuss money. Dozens of times the gospels record him teaching on how we spend, give and earn our money. We will be spending the next 4 weeks participating in this conversation that scripture has over 800 times from Genesis to Revelation. Having a right approach to how we make, keep, save, give and spend our money is essential for a disciple. As Tozer states above our money does not just have to be a temptation we overcome in this life but rather it can be another tool we use to glorify God in this world. Join us on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights and get in on the conversation! In Scripture we see this happen in some pretty spectacular ways. No matter what age a person may be, it would be pretty awesome to receive a clear message from God indicating exactly what one’s calling for life is. But there’s one story of God giving someone a message that stands out to me because the specific calling for the boy’s life isn’t the only thing he is being call to. The story of David is one many of us know well. God tells Samuel to go to the sons of Jesse so that he can anoint the boy who God has chosen to be the future king. After looking on the sons of Jesse it is David, the youngest and seemingly least likely to be chosen as future king, who God tells Samuel to anoint. So there it is, a clear calling for David’s life. He is going to be the king of Israel. But immediately after being anointed, David returns to the fields to continue his duties as shepherd. And later he is called in to play the lyre for Saul, the current king. I imagine for some of us, pride may have gotten in the way of us completing that task. And then David faces Goliath. And then David has a contentious relationship with Saul in which Saul tries to kill him. All these things and more happen before David becomes king. The point is this: David is called specifically to be king but his more general calling is to be faithful wherever he is in life. The same is true for us. God’s word is a clear message from God that we are called to be faithful where we are. Your call, your created purpose is to bring glory to God (Isaiah 43:7).
