Our Parish is looking to establish a program that will make
it easier for individuals and companies to make charitable
contributions to our parish or school. We envision the use
of designated beneficiaries of life insurance, annuities, retirement programs, and trust. These are some of the things
we are considering:
• Gifting of Required Minimum Distributions.
• Using RMD to pay premiums on policy with parish as
beneficiary.
• Use of matching contributions from employers.
• Gifting of stock.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
A Vigil Prayer Service will take place on
December 11th at 11:00 p.m. in the church.
Join us on Wednesday, December 12th to
celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A
special Mass will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m.,
followed by a reception in the parish hall. All are
welcome to join the festive traditions of this feast.

Pope Benedict comments on the
Immaculate Conception
Pope Benedict XVI marked the Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary by reciting the Angelus
in St. Peter’s Square. The Holy Father said the mystery of the
dogma proclaimed by Pius IX in 1854, is “a source of inner
light, of hope and comfort”. In the midst of life’s trials and contradictions, which man experiences within himself and around
him, Mary, Mother of Christ, tells us that grace is greater than
sin, that God’s mercy is more powerful than evil, and knows
how to turn it into good.
At the root of all evil, the Pope said, is disobedience to God’s
will on the part of human freedom, which has succumbed to
the temptation of the devil. And now the evil has its root in the
human heart, a heart sick and wounded, unable to heal itself.
He said God has prepared a new and everlasting covenant,
sealed by the blood of his Son who, to offer himself in atonement, was “born of a woman.” This woman, the Virgin Mary,
benefited in advance from the redeeming death of her Son for
she was preserved from the contagion of guilt since conception. The Pope said Mary helps us above all to have faith in
God, to believe in his word, always to reject evil and choose
good.

NO ACT OF KINDNESS IS MEANINGLESS
BEFORE GOD
Vatican City, 11 November 2012 (VIS) - At midday, Benedict XVI appeared at the window of his studio to pray the
Angelus with faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square. He
commented on this Sunday's liturgy of the Word, which presents two widows as examples of faith: one in the First
Book of Kings, the other in the Gospel of Mark.
"Both these women are very poor, and it is precisely in this
condition that they demonstrate their great faith in God. The
first widow appears in the cycle of narratives on the prophet
Elijah. During a period of famine he receives an order from
the Lord to go to Sidon, therefore outside Israel and in pagan territory. There he encounters a widow and asks her for
some water to drink and a little bread. The woman answers
that all she has is a handful of flour and a drop of oil, but
since the prophet insists and promises her that, if she listens to him, she will no longer lack flour and oil, she grants
his request and is rewarded. The second widow, from the
Gospel, is noticed by Jesus in the temple of Jerusalem, in
the treasury where the people offer contributions. Jesus
sees that this woman throws two coins into the chest and
then calls the disciples to Him, explaining that her offering
is greater than that given by the rich as, while they gave
what was superfluous to them, she gave all she had to live
on".
These two biblical episodes offer us "valuable teaching on
faith", said the Pope. "The faith is presented as the interior
attitude of one who bases his or her own life on God, on the
Word, and who confides fully in Him. To be a widow, in ancient times, constituted in itself a condition of grave need.
Thus, in the Bible, widows and orphans are people of whom
God takes particular care; although they have lost their
means of subsistence on earth, God remains as their
Spouse or their Father. However, the Scriptures state that
the objective condition of need, in this case the fact of being
a widow, is not enough: God always asks us to adhere willingly to faith, which is expressed as love for Him and for
one's neighbor. No one is so poor that they are unable to
give something. And indeed, both these widows show their
faith in an act of charity: one towards the prophet and the
other in giving alms. They therefore demonstrate the indivisible unity of faith and charity, which is like that between
love for God and love for neighbor".
The Pope concluded by recalling the words of St. Leo the
Great, "No act of kindness is meaningless before God, no
mercy is fruitless".

St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery Association
During the past twelve months, we completed the
process of consolidating the Catholic cemeteries here in
Streator. Each cemetery will retain its original name while
all the assets are held by the newly created “St. Michael the
Archangel Cemetery Association.” The Association is comprised of the cemeteries of St. Casimir, St. Anthony, St.
Mary, and St. Stephen (both old and new). This enables all
of the equipment and machinery to be available for use for
all of our cemeteries while avoiding unnecessary duplication of equipment expenses. And because our cemeteries
are now centrally overseen, each cemetery will be maintained at the highest standards. The faithful of this city have
long taken pride in the maintenance of the Catholic cemeteries and they can expect that these standards will continue.
Our two parish trustees, Mr. Jason Schultz and Mr.
Steve Broadus, serve as the principal advisors to Monsignor Philip Halfacre who, as pastor, has responsibility for
the cemeteries. Mrs. Mary Rizzo continues as the Cemetery Association secretary. Mr. Daniel Ebker was hired several months ago as the sexton for the Association. His chief
responsibility is the maintenance of the records of all burial
plots and “keeping track of who is buried where” in our
cemeteries. He is presently in the process of putting our
burial records into a digital format to safeguard their permanence and to allow for easier access by the public. If you
are interested in acquiring a plot in one of our cemeteries,
please contact Dan. Both Mary and Dan can be reached by
calling the parish office. Mr. Kevin Kusnerik is the maintenance manager and functions as the supervisor of all our
groundskeepers.
St. Anthony Cemetery was the recipient of a recent
gift by Barbara Stipp who donated a new sign for the cemetery. It was given in memory of George and Betty Quaka.
We are grateful to her for her generosity and to the many
who donated their time, material, and know-how to help
with the installation.
We are especially grateful to Mr. Dale Blakemore
who recently retired after thirty years of dedicated service to
St. Mary’s Cemetery. Thanks, Dale! You will be greatly
missed.

Scholarship Fund Grants
Tuition assistance scholarship grants from the endowment fund established as a result of the Diocese of
Peoria ROOTED IN FAITH Campaign and named in
honor of Archbishop Spalding, the first Bishop of Peoria, will be available for the 2013 - 2014 school year
for students enrolled in or intending to enroll in grades
kindergarten through 12 in any Catholic school located in the Diocese of Peoria whose families are
members of a Catholic parish in the diocese. All
grants will be based on financial need objectively assessed. Information about the grants and application
materials may be obtained from any Catholic elementary or secondary school in the Diocese of Peoria or
on the Diocesan website www.cdop.org: Click on
EDUCATION; then on OFFICE OF CATHOLIC
SCHOOLS; and then on SPALDING SCHOLARSHIPS. Families of students currently receiving grants
are reminded that all grants are for one year only, and
anyone seeking to renew a grant for 2013 - 2014
must reapply. Deadline for the completed application
is February 15, 2013. Notification of grant awards will
be made by mid-April.
