cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the u.s. it’s the second overall killer
behind accidents. approximately 12,700 new cases of pediatric cancer were diagnosed in children
0-20 years of age in 2008. the peak of childhood cancer incidence ravages infants to 5-year-olds,
barely starting their lives. unfortunately, cancer among children is not one disease type. there are
25 different types to research and treat. Each type has its own set of challenges.
the constant obstacles to improving survival rates are time and money. For children
with cancer, time is never on their side. Money for research is as precious as blood. Less than 2%
of federal funding for cancer research is directed toward solving cancers that aff lict children. this
inequitable situation challenges not only the affected children and their families, but the humanity
in all of us. a monster is one thing. an unfair fight is another.

cancers that affect children are very different from the cancers adults get. they are not
minor or slighter versions, but singularly different. they need and deserve their own research,
drugs and therapies for effective treatment and cures. unfortunately, funding for child-specific
research is a small percentage of that appropriated for cancer research in general. the funding is
small, like the children themselves. Kids are easily lost in the crowd of adult cancer patients.
that’s exactly why cuRE was founded in 1975. the founders were a group of parents
of children with cancer and a dedicated pediatric oncologist at Emory university. they joined
forces to provide critical funding for life-saving research aimed specifically to cure cancers that
impact children.
Early on, funding from cuRE established and equipped the research lab at Emory for the
training and research by pediatric hematology/oncology doctors. continuous funding has led to
collaborative efforts between Emory and the national cancer institute where clinical trials are
testing the effectiveness of new, potentially life-saving therapies.

the national cancer institute was formed in 1937 to conduct and foster cancer research
for all cancers in people of all ages. although progress has been historic, most of the research that
has been conducted relates to adult cancers. again, funding priorities have dictated that.
cuRE is committed to helping solve childhood cancers, with or without the help of federal
funding; with or without funding from the major drug companies. We know what child-specific
research can accomplish. the discovery of chemotherapy is a historic example. chemotherapy was
formulated to treat acute leukemia, the most common cancer in children. it has been a life-saving
therapy for cancer patients of all ages.
Research focused specifically on childhood cancers has dramatically decreased mortality
in children with cancer. Doctors and scientists conducting this targeted research know the wonders
it yields. they battle every day to discover yet another test, another therapy, another treatment.
Every precious effort of research depends on transfusions of the targeted funding cuRE provides
to keep it alive. Be assured, every dollar of cuRE funding is fighting hard – for the children
who shouldn’t have to.

cuRE childhood cancer focuses our research investments at the af lac cancer center and
Blood Disorders services at children’s Healthcare of atlanta and Emory university. During fiscal
year 2008-2009, cuRE invested $1.2 million in 6 specific research projects conducted by scientists
at these institutions. the projects concentrated on developing new targeted treatments for childhood cancers such as neuroblastoma, refractory leukemia and medulloblastoma.

cuRE also invested in a crucial new initiative to ensure pediatric cancer survivors in
georgia and beyond receive recommended survivor care. there are more than 270,000 childhood
cancer survivors in the u.s. survivorship studies are looking carefully at the long term impact of
conventional drugs and therapies used to achieve a cure. our objective is to reduce the incidence
and severity of late effects in pediatric cancer survivors. understanding the implications of current
treatments is critical to ensuring children are cured, but with quality of life left intact.

the devastation childhood cancer hurls upon a family is unimaginable. Physically,
psychologically, financially – it is absolutely crushing for families walking this road. the common
pain and struggle are the essence driving cuRE’s patient and family support programs.
in 2008-2009, cuRE was an integral part of thousands of lives of childhood cancer
patients, survivors, family members, bereaved families and caregivers on the front lines.

We engaged more than 300 newly diagnosed children and their families, arming them with
essential information and guidance. our staff built a hands-on relationship with each family from
week one to help sustain them throughout their journey and beyond.

CURE provided hot meals for 5,500 hospitalized children, their families and caregivers
at our weekly dinners at Scottish Rite and Egleston Hospitals. We provided $105,000 in financial
assistance to families in financial distress as a result of their child’s diagnosis. We comforted more
than 100 parents during our annual Bereavement Weekend. We hosted a Hispanic Health Education
Seminar where Spanish speaking doctors and caregivers could counsel Spanish speaking families.
Ca r ing f or the Ca r e giv er P ro gr a m.
CURE recognizes the unique and sometimes debilitating emotional strain on nurses, family
support team members and other caregivers of young cancer patients. These caregivers are often
like family to our stricken families, and their physical and emotional health is important to the
children who depend on them for care. Each month, we recognized exceptional nurses with special
award-gifts. We provided pick-me-up sessions for caregivers to mutually process their experiences
and grief. And we invested in the continuing education of the caregivers on the front lines.

Knights preparing for a crusade. it’s a fitting portrayal of the fellows, or physicians,
who undergo specialty training to prepare them for a career in research, teaching and/or clinical
practice. We believe it is crucial to have new teams of skilled researchers and clinicians to carry
on the search for the ultimate cure and to care for our children expertly.
in fiscal year 2008-2009, cuRE fully funded two pediatric oncology fellows at the Emory
university school of Medicine: Dr. Wes Miller, a graduate of stanford university and Louisiana
state university and Dr. tanya Watt, a graduate of Harvard university. We’ve been responsible
for training nine pediatric oncologists who are now on the staffs of children’s cancer hospitals
all over the country.
through these dedicated doctors, cuRE continues to touch, if not rescue, the lives of
children with cancer across america.

in addition to the special funds that raised money for cuRE, significant contributions and
attention also emerged from some rather special events in 2008-2009.
L aur en ’s Ru n a nd the A nn ua l C U R E P icnic.
this day, in its 15th year, was inspired by two little Laurens who lost their heroic battles
with cancer and their families’ desire to find a cure. the event, on May 3, 2009, was a glorious
success. it not only raised $130,000 for childhood cancer research, but also gathered together 1,200
brave young patients, long time survivors, family members, friends and schoolmates to celebrate
hope and survivorship and to pay tribute to the courageous young warriors lost to the disease.

tom glavine was back again, staring down childhood cancer. on september 8, 2008, the
two-time cy Young award-winning pitcher hosted a golf tournament, with sports celebrities and
friends participating, to raise money for cuRE childhood cancer. the tournament at the
country club of the south, and a live auction, raised more than $185,000 for cuRE.

this event was hosted for the fourth time by chris glavine, wife of superstar Major League
pitcher tom glavine. the inspiring event paid tribute to mothers of children with cancer whose
tireless dedication guides their families through an unimaginable journey. More than 500 guests
honored 200 mothers of children with cancer. the event raised more than $250,000 for cuRE.
the glavines continue to champion cuRE with their passion, time and resources.
they truly believe that if you build a cause, people will come. With all their heart.

Jeff Foxworthy. the popular, down-to-earth humorist, who tells everything like it is, ardently

spokesman in an on-line video and tV and radio spots that grab attention and pull no punches.
He is the best-selling comedic recording artist of all time, but there is no trace of Hollywood in
his public service message – where he admits to being ‘never more serious in his life.’

a hundred years ago, a child with cancer had almost no chance to live. Fifty years ago, 10%
of children survived the dreaded disease. today, children diagnosed with cancer have nearly an
80% survival rate.
We have come so far out of the darkness of this disease. and cuRE has been at the center of
this surge. Like no other organization, we have devoted our existence solely to the relentless, plodding
hours of research needed to solve childhood cancers. there is life-saving progress occurring even
as you read this. But research is fueled by funding. and inexplicably there continues to be a meager
share of federal funding for childhood cancer, and little funding from the major drug companies.
so we work harder, think deeper and reach out further – for help.
