Dear 2017-2018 Incoming 6th Graders,
Congratulations on your promotion to Pearl Junior High School! We are looking
forward to a year filled with interesting stories, novel conversations,
group activities, and achievements in language arts. We are certain that you
will be able to balance your fun summer activities with your required
assignments so that you are ready for the beginning of the school year.
In alignment with the Mississippi College- and Career-readiness Standards, we
have chosen James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl as your summer
reading novel. You must have your own copy of this novel to read at home
during the summer and to be used in class with assignments during the first
nine weeks. This novel can be purchased online or at your local bookstore.
James and the Giant Peach is written on Lexile level of 870, which is an
appropriate reading level for the beginning of the sixth grade year. Please be
prepared for the beginning of school by having read the entire novel before
school begins in August.
Several minor writing assignments and a
comprehensive test will be assigned for James and the Giant Peach
during the first full week of school. It is important that you have read the
novel and are prepared to begin classwork and class discussions as soon as we
return.
As you read the novel, keep this essential question in mind: Why did James
choose to stay with his aunts?
*Any student who requires extra reading support should have an adult read
with him/her allowing the text to be read fluently. Reading together provides
opportunities to hear good reading techniques and allows for conversations
about characters, plot, setting, etc. found in the novel while leading you to the
answer of the essential question (see above).
Thank you,
Sixth Grade Language Arts Department
