7th Grade Social Studies UNIT 1 Dates Unit/Content Topic Week 1 2012-2013 Skills Essential Questions and Concepts Exploring Maps of the Eastern Hemisphere 1 I can explain and use a variety of maps to study the world. I can draw an accurate sketch map from memory of the eastern hemisphere. I can use information from GPS and GIS. • • • • • • Week 2-3 Landforms, Bodies of Water, and Vegetation of the Eastern Hemisphere Climate Regions of the Eastern Hemisphere Phil Quinlan UPDATED June 2012 Lesson • Week 1-2 CURRICULUM MAP 2 3 I can locate the major landforms of the Eastern Hemisphere. I can answer questions by observing air photos. I can use the five themes of geography. I can describe the landform features of the Eastern Hemisphere. I can use info from GIS to compare the surface of the EH. I can use the five themes of geography. I can describe the landform features and the climate of the region. I can construct and analyze climate graphs. • • • • • • • • • • • What are the significant physical characteristics of the Eastern Hemisphere? Maps are used for a variety of purposes. Maps come in many scales including global, interregional, regional and local. A mental map is useful for understanding the world. Modern technology can help us when studying the geography of the Eastern Hemisphere. There are many similarities as well as differences between the geography of the Eastern and Western hemispheres. RH.6-8.7 WHST.68.10 How has physical geography affected history and cultures? Physical features include landforms, bodies of water and vegetation. Physical features help to define regions. The five themes of geography can be used to describe places on earth. Technology is useful when comparing and contrasting the regions of the Eastern Hemisphere. Regions are one way to organize geographic information. 7-G1.2.1 7-G1.2.3 7-G1.3.1 7-G2.1.1 7-G2.1.2 Weather is the condition of the atmosphere on a daily basis. Climate is based on the average of the weather characteristics of the atmosphere over a long period of time (for example, one hundred years). One way to record the precipitation and temperature of a climate is with a set of graphs called a climograph. Geographic questions can be answered by comparing and contrasting climates of various locations. Knowledge of a region’s climate can aid in understanding patterns of the region. 7-G1.3.1 7.G2.1.1 7-G3.1.1 Small Group Discussion Think/Pair/Sha re RH.6-8.7 Resources Assessment Atlases and iPads with Internet and geographic technology loaded Examples of maps Geography journal Paper and markers for world maps Population Video Compare what students know about the geography of the Eastern Hemisphere to what students know about the Western Hemisphere. I can describe the human characteristics of the Eastern Hemisphere. • How have humans used, adapted to, and modified different environments in the Eastern Hemisphere? • Human characteristics or human features include languages, religions, foods, clothing styles, economic systems, form of government, and traditions. Human characteristics are those features made by people. Human characteristics help to define regions of the Eastern Hemisphere Many things can be learned about regions of Africa and Asia by studying the human characteristics found there. Regions change, overlap, and can be defined in many ways. • • • • Week 5-6 Population Patterns of the Eastern Hemisphere 5 I can draw the general population distribution of the EH on a map. I can describe the patterns of settlement by using historical and modern maps. • • • • • • Week 7-8 Week 8-9 Human Environment of the Eastern Hemisphere Putting It All 6 7 I can use the five themes of geography. I can identify places in the EH that have been changed to be livable. I can explain that a change in the environment can have an impact on people. I can use the five themes of • How have physical and climatic events and features shaped the population patterns of the Eastern Hemisphere? Population distribution is the way people are spread out over an area. Population density is the average number of people living in a square mile or kilometer Settlement patterns can be studied through a variety of maps The Sahel is a semi-arid region in Africa between the Sahara on the north and the savannah in the south Settlement patterns are linked to physical features of the Earth as well as human features • How have people been shaped by historical experiences? • Human/environment interaction shows us the ways in which people use and interact with the Earth. • People can adapt to the environment by changing their behavior because of certain natural conditions. • People can modify the environment by changing physical features of nature to accommodate their own lives. • Human/environment interaction can be either positive or negative. • The Peace Corps is an American organization of volunteers who assist with projects in developing countries around the world.
