What are the significant physical
characteristics of the Eastern Hemisphere?
Maps are used for a variety of purposes.
Maps come in many scales including global, interregional,
regional and local.
A mental map is useful for understanding the world.
Modern technology can help us when studying the geography
of the Eastern Hemisphere.
There are many similarities as well as differences between the
geography of the Eastern and Western hemispheres.

How has physical geography affected history and
cultures?
Physical features include landforms, bodies of water and
vegetation.
Physical features help to define regions.
The five themes of geography can be used to describe places
on earth.
Technology is useful when comparing and contrasting the
regions of the Eastern Hemisphere.
Regions are one way to organize geographic information.

Weather is the condition of the atmosphere on a daily basis.
Climate is based on the average of the weather characteristics
of the atmosphere over a long period of time (for example, one
hundred years).
One way to record the precipitation and temperature of a
climate is with a set of graphs called a climograph.
Geographic questions can be answered by comparing and
contrasting climates of various locations.
Knowledge of a region’s climate can aid in understanding
patterns of the region.

I can use observations from air

about the world.
I can describe the human
characteristics of the Eastern
Hemisphere.
•
How have humans used, adapted to, and
modified different environments in the
Eastern Hemisphere?
•
Human characteristics or human features include languages,
religions, foods, clothing styles, economic systems, form of
government, and traditions.
Human characteristics are those features made by people.
Human characteristics help to define regions of the Eastern
Hemisphere
Many things can be learned about regions of Africa and Asia by
studying the human characteristics found there.
Regions change, overlap, and can be defined in many ways.

•
How have physical and climatic events and features
shaped the population patterns of the Eastern
Hemisphere?
Population distribution is the way people are spread out over
an area.
Population density is the average number of people living in a
square mile or kilometer
Settlement patterns can be studied through a variety of maps
The Sahel is a semi-arid region in Africa between the Sahara
on the north and the savannah in the south
Settlement patterns are linked to physical features of the Earth
as well as human features
• How have people been shaped by historical
experiences?
• Human/environment interaction shows us the ways in
which people use and interact with the Earth.
• People can adapt to the environment by changing their
behavior because of certain natural conditions.
• People can modify the environment by changing physical
features of nature to accommodate their own lives.
• Human/environment interaction can be either positive or
negative.
• The Peace Corps is an American organization of
volunteers who assist with projects in developing
countries around the world.

Hemisphere different from and similar to the geography
of the Western Hemisphere?
Physical features of the six inhabited continents are similar.
People have created a variety of human features to make each
continent unique.
The Earth can be divided in a variety of ways, hemispheres
being one of these ways.
Eurasia refers to the continents of Europe and Asia while AfroEurasia refers to the three continents of Africa, Europe and
Asia.
There are many patterns that are global in scope.
