ExCLAIM newsletter for 2nd quarter 2014

2ND QUARTER 2014
Medigap guide revised with more information
I
applaud CLAIM Director
Carol Beahan and her team
in their quest to reach nearly
55,000 contacts this year.
Our department stands ready to
provide the tools to meet that goal.
Like you, our mission is to educate
Missourians about their Medigap,
Part D and Medicare Advantage
options.
To help make those decisions
easier, we have revised our 2014
Medigap Shopping
Guide. We have
included two
pages (10 and 11)
that provide eight
situations where
you are guaranteed
the right to obtain
John M. Huff
a Medigap policy.
DIFP Director
These situations
include when your policy ends
through no fault of your own, or
when you have Original Medicare
and a supplemental plan with an
employer group that is terminating
coverage.
Look for the 2014
guide. It also can be
found online at
insurance.mo.gov/
consumers/seniors.
Again, thank
you for your
outstanding outreach efforts.
It’s about helping people and making a difference

NEWSLETTER FOR CLAIM VOLUNTEERS
Missouri at a national level.
Some of the help you give
requires an explanation to
complex problems, requiring
research and coordination with
other agencies.
You make a difference to every
individual you help.
Our goal for 2014 is to reach
54,985 contacts and we will
get there – together.
Sometimes I feel like I’m
counting beans – although when
I take the time to see how these
numbers affect so many people
I realize it can’t be done without
you and all of us together.
It’s not just about the numbers
– it’s about helping people and
making a difference.
Thank you!
Partner provides multiple services for seniors
R
olla Apartments has been a
CLAIM community partner for
two years. Located in Phelps
County, the Sansone Group property
provides seniors affordable housing
with many perks, including an onsite service coordinator and 24-hour
maintenance.
The Section 8 housing residence
bases rent on income, although not all
residents are low-income. Its mission is
to keep seniors living independently as
long as possible.
CLAIM events have proven very
successful due to the widespread
marketing by Rolla Apartments.
Advertisements are placed on the radio,
in the local newspaper, on communitydistributed posters, and in the apartment
newsletter.
Daphne Alcorn, service coordinator
for the apartments, says, “The CLAIM
volunteers in the Phelps County area
are some of the most kind and patient
people I have ever worked alongside.”
Being a partner has been a rewarding
experience for both Daphne and the
apartment complex. “The look in
someone’s eyes after you have informed
them that you saved them money
(sometimes over a thousand dollars), is
priceless,” Daphne says.

CLAIM volunteer enjoys empowering seniors
J
ackie Dover, benefits
counselor at SEMO Area
Agency on Aging, will
celebrate her five-year anniversary
as a CLAIM counselor in May.
Jackie became a counselor
because she enjoys helping and
empowering seniors when making
Medicare decisions that best fit
their needs. “I love working with
CLAIM. The training and support
they provide is the best.”
What does Jackie find
most rewarding about being a
volunteer? “With CLAIM, you
can instantly see how much you
are helping someone, whether
you save them money or make
something so overwhelming seem
so manageable.”
She tells the story of a man
who, at his own detriment, was

caring for his wife. Jackie enrolled
them in new, affordable drug plans
that allowed his wife to buy all of
her medications and him to buy
and start taking his again. Jackie’s
help brought the man to tears.
How rewarding it is to have
such selfless volunteers who make
it their mission to help seniors
through the Medicare maze and
find plans that best fit their needs
and budget.
In her spare time, Jackie enjoys
reading and spending time with her
four boys who keep her busy with
sports and other activities.
