Preliminary schedule
The South Surrey Interceptor (SSI), built in 1971, is a major
sewer facility serving large portions of Surrey, Delta,
Langley and White Rock. Significant population growth
within the service area has sparked the demand to install
an additional 10 kilometers of twinned sewer along the
SSI. Metro Vancouver, formerly known as the Greater
Vancouver Regional District, began this long-term
phased twinning project in 2000. To date, approximately
5.5 kilometers of the SSI has been twinned.
Beginning in the spring of 2010,
Metro Vancouver is planning to
construct the next section of
twinned sewer south of Coulthard
and Trites Roads in Surrey. This
work will involve building a
second sewer, along the existing
King George Section. See map to
the right.

The new sewer will extend
from south of Coulthard Place
to a proposed chamber at
King George Highway. When
complete, the new Trites Road
Section will have the capacity
to meet the next 50 years of
population growth within the
service area.

2008/2009 Design activities
The design of the Trites Road Section of the SSI is currently
underway and is scheduled to be completed by 2009.
During this period, a detailed traffic management and site
access and security plan will be developed in partnership
with the City of Surrey. This stage of work also includes
surveying, geotechnical, and environmental investigations.
During this phase, there will be surveyors or drilling
equipment working along the right-of-way.
Wastewater from the South
Surrey Interceptor is treated at
the Annacis Island Wastewater
Treatment Plant in Delta, one of
five wastewater treatment plants
in Metro Vancouver.
The Annacis Island Wastewater
Treatment Plant treats wastewater
from businesses and more than
800,000 residents. Sewer flow
peaks at 7:30 a.m. and again
between 7 and 8:30 p.m.
2010/2011 Construction activities
Construction of the Trites Road Section of the SSI is
scheduled to be completed in two phases, occurring in
2010 and 2011. Pipe installation is expected to start south of
Coulthard Place in the west and progress toward a future
chamber near the King George Highway to the east. Valve
chambers will be used to regulate flow and collect grit that
accumulates in the sewer.
80% of wastewater treated at the
plants come from our homes.
The goal of wastewater treatment is
to protect and maintain
healthy waterways.
Wastewater contains pollutants.
If they are not removed, they will flow
directly into waterways — our rivers
and oceans — threatening fisheries,
habitat for wildlife, recreation,
quality of life and public health.
For the proposed routing of the new sewer, please refer to the
map on the first page.
During periods of construction, there may be dust, noise,
loss of tree cover and habitat disruption. Metro Vancouver
and the City of Surrey are in partnership to identify potential
impacts and develop appropriate mitigation measures.
The area will be fully restored once construction has been
completed.
Your community
Public involvement
Traffic management, environmental management, restoration
and planting plans will be developed in conjunction with the
City of Surrey during the design phase.
During design and construction, Metro Vancouver will
provide residents with updates on project milestones
through letters or fact sheets.
During design and construction, Metro Vancouver will
consult with the community and respond to any related
issues that may arise. Staff will also be on-site to monitor
project progress.
