Thank you to all of the students statewide that participated in this year’s contest
and to the Lions Clubs that sponsored them.
The response to the contest was outstanding
and the entries were very hard to judge. The
talent that was shown was tremendous. The
contest is a great way to connect with your
community and encourage youth to express
their vision of peace.

“Train up a child in the way he should
go, and when he is old he will not depart
from it”.
— Proverbs 22:6
On Monday, December 5th Alabama
Lions Sight was honored to host a group of
Leo’s from Tuscaloosa hosted by Lion Coneta Guinn. The students had the opportunity
to tour the Lions Eye Clinic at Callahan and
meet the clinic director Dr. Jeffery Yee and
a number of the Ophthalmology residents
training in the clinic that day.
Dr. Yee and the residents were generous with their time explaining how the Lions
Eye Clinic serves the needs of the poor and
indigent in Alabama and the great opportunities the clinic provides in the residents
training.
The Lions Clinic works hand in hand
with the emergency room at Callahan which
is 1 of only 3, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the
year eye trauma centers in the United States.
The Leo’s had the opportunity to tour
the exam rooms and get detailed information from Dr. Yee on the equipment used for
comprehensive eye exams and eye disease
diagnoses. The Lions of Alabama should
be proud for it was through their financial
support during Campaign 72-72 back in
2014 that much of the new eye exam equipment in the Lions Clinic was purchased
and is used every day for emergency room
and Lions Eye Clinic patients. Last year
approx. 5,000 poor and indigent patients
were served through the Lions Eye Clinic
at Callahan, a number that should make all
Lions in Alabama proud!

Before the Leo’s toured the Lions Eye
Clinic, Alabama Lions Sight Executive
Director PDG Durden Dean gave the students a brief history of Alabama Lions Sight,
the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital and the hospitals founder, Dr. Austin Callahan.
I often ask that clubs submit articles
and pictures to recognize and honor long
serving Lions. I would be remiss in my
duties if I did not report the sad news of the
passing of a long serving Alabama Lion, B.H.
“Tubby” Hall of Opp, Alabama. Lion Tubby,
also known affectionately as “Coach” to generations of children in the Opp area, served
over 50 years as a member of the Opp Lions
Club and was a board member and past
president of Alabama Lions Sight. Even at 95
years old, Lion Tubby served in the honored
position of board advisor to the Alabama
Lions Endowment fund. Lion Tubby’s wisdom and sage advice will be sorely missed
by Alabama Lions Sight and all that knew
him. I have included an abbreviated version
of Lion Tubby’s obituary
B. H. “Tubby” Hall, aged 95, passed
away Thursday, December 15, in the Opp
Health and Rehab Center, Opp, Alabama.
He was born on March 8, 1921, in Pickens
County to Oren Lee and Robert Lee Hall.
He and his brother, Gray, shared a life-long
love of baseball inherited from their father.
Tubby (also known as Coach to many)
helped manage a Pickens County baseball
team at age 13, and played both baseball
and football in high-school. After graduating
high school in 1938, he went into the Civilian Conversation Corps but was encouraged
to apply to college. He attended the Univer-
sity of Alabama, graduating with a BS degree
and dreams to become a career baseball
coach. While in school, and also working, he
met his wife, Erna Davis, and they married
in 1942. In 1943, he entered the Army where
he served with George S. Patton’s Third
Army in World War II; several years later,
he served again during the Korean Conflict.
He never lost his love for baseball,
and in 1953 he helped organize Opp’s Little
League program; he coached the Pirates
until the mid-1990s. He loved Opp -- the
community and its people. He was a committed member of the First Methodist
Church from 1949 until his death; served
with the Opp Lions Club for over 50 years
and Alabama Lions Sight for over 20; was

difference that you have lived and lived well.

Lion to honor them! Do it while they can

that we inspire through sports like Lion

Cullman Lions Club presents check
The Cullman Lions Club presented Cullman Caring for Kids a
very special gift Monday: a check for
almost $19,000.
The club’s meeting, held at the
All Steak Restaurant, started with
a quick game of Christmas trivia
and a few updates on the health of
fellow members, followed by President Barry Willingham announcing
upcoming birthdays and events.
When all announcements were finished, a check of $18,860 was presented to Cullman Caring for Kids
(CCK) from the Cullman Lions Club
and friends.
More than half of the donation
- $10,000 - was provided by the Lions
Club. The rest of the money came
from projects such as paid parking
for Rock the South (which raised
$6,558) and community donations.
“It’s fantastic, it’s incredible,
it’s needed. The Lions Club always
comes through,” Javon Daniel, executive director of CCK, said about the
generous gift. “Cullman Caring for
Kids can’t say enough good about
them.”
CCK is able to provide roughly seven pounds of food for every
dollar donated, so the check provided will help the nonprofit procure approximately 132,000 pounds
of food. Even more great news, the
Lions Club announced that they will
match any funds donated to Cullman Caring for Kids through the
Cullman Lions charity after the new
year.
The night concluded on a
merry note with Lion Jim Walker
leading the members in a series of
Christmas carols such as “Joy to the
World” and “Angels We Have Heard
on High” before singing one last solo
of “Sweet Little Jesus Boy.”

In and Around the District
Well here we are starting off a new year
and the 100th year of a club started at a
lunch table in Chicago, IL on a warm June
day that would become the largest service
organization in the world, The Lions Club.
Lions Club International, in the next 100
years, grew to over 1.4 million members in
more than 200 different countries around
the world helping over 100 million people.
Doesn’t it just make you proud to be a Lion?
Come join us in Chicago from 29 June - 4
July 2017 for our 100th Anniversary and be a
part of a celebration that will propel us into
the next millennium and beyond. Boy what
a time we’ll have!!!
Our District Convention will be held
on March 18, 2017 at the Oxford Civic
Center, 401 McCullars Lane, Oxford, AL
and our guest speaker will be International
Director Nicolin Carol Moore from Trinidad
and Tobago. She will bring us all the latest
information from LCI and share some of the
unique ways her clubs visits and conducts
business where she’s from. PDG Durden
Dean will speak on the new Vision USA
program which will help cut down the price
we pay for glasses to $65, so come out and
join us and get to know what your district is
all about. We have attached a registration
form in this newsletter.
The VDGs’ and myself have been
very busy visiting all the clubs within the
district and find that like all districts within
LCI, we have things we could improve on
like: summiting activities reports, and low
membership in a few clubs. But, when it
comes to helping people and supporting
our communities 34B wins hands down.
Congratulations to the Multiple District 34
Peace poster winner this year from Drake
Middle School Lina Sim sponsored by the
Auburn Lions If we haven’t been to your
club yet, give us a call or drop us an e-mail
([email protected]) and I assure
you we will visit. This is your district and
only you can make it Great!

In and Around the District
Hello Lions!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and holiday season.
Here we are midway through the
2016-2017 Lions year. Many service activities have been performed
throughout our district by selfless
lions. Thank you! With 6 months
still in front of us to fulfill our club
and district goals, we still have
mountains to climb; growing membership, seeking and training new
emerging leaders, and continuing
existing and new service activities.
Membership Growth
One district goal is to reduce
the number of members dropped
by 10% over last year. We are on
pace to meet that goal, even though
we all hate to see that we have
dropped 86 members to date.
One other goal, which is the most
important, is that each club be
“plus one” by June 30th. Having
added only 51 new members to
date indicates we have work to do
regarding membership growth.
There are resources available to
help develop your club’s membership growth program on LCI’s
website; Blueprint for a Stronger
Club, Your Club Your Way, Club
Excellence Process, Women’s
Membership Initiative, and more
(http://members.lionsclubs.org/
EN/resources/membership-leadership-development-booklet.php).
If you desire hands-on assistance,
please contact your GMT, PDG Ron
K. Mitchell.
Chicago Centennial
Celebration
I am sure there is information in this newsletter regarding
the International Convention this
summer, but I want to encourage
each of you to consider attending
this once-in-a-lifetime Lion’s experience. It’s going to be a grandiose affair! Check out all the details
regarding the convention and registration on the LCI website.

District Convention
We are nearing our annual
district convention to be held in
Demopolis, hosted by our wonderful lions of that community.
The registration form and tentative agenda has been distributed to
your club president and secretary.
These documents are also available on our district website. Early
registration will help us determine
food service needs. We will have
a dynamic International Director
visiting our convention, ID William (Bill) Phillipi and his wonderful wife, Lion Vickie from Kansas.
Club presidents and secretaries are
advisory members to the district
governor, so I especially hope to
see these club officers attend to
help guide your district in a direction that supports your club.
Centennial Service
and Legacy Projects
Please share your centennial
service activities and legacy project
ideas with other clubs in our district by posting them on our district
Facebook page or sharing with us
all via email. I would also encour-
age you to report your centennial
activities to your district Centennial Coordinator, Lion Hank Lahti
with Bay Minette Lions.
Club Reports
From Eight Mile Lions; in
November, Eight-Mile Lions participated in the “Sock It to Mobile
Project”- an organization that collects socks to give to the homeless and to nursing homes. Another
club project performed in December was donating turkeys and all
the food necessary for a Christmas dinner to three elementary
schools (4 boxes at each school) in
the Prichard-Eight Mile area. EightMile lions also worked at the Salvation Army Angel Tree warehouse
and passed out fruit at a Senior
Citizen Apartment complex.
In closing, I look forward to
seeing you in March at our (your)
district convention. Until then, I
encourage each club to share activities and ideas by communicating
through our Facebook page. It’s so
easy!
In your service,
District Governor Daryl
Eight-Mile Lions participated in the club project of donating
food for Christmas dinner to three elementary schools.

Our centennial year has arrived!
The excitement continues to grow as we quickly approach our
100th anniversary. There are only 150 days between February 1st and
the beginning of our 100th International Convention in Chicago, Illinois
on June 30, 2017. There is still time for you to help us reach our goal of
100 individuals in our Alabama delegation and 100 band members in
the Alabama Lions High School All-Star Band. This convention will be a
once in a lifetime opportunity as we travel back to our birthplace, reflect
upon our incredible legacy, and launch our second century of service.
We would like to have as many Alabama Lions as possible in Chicago to
witness this historic event.
If you are unable to attend the convention in Chicago you will still
be able to be part of our Centennial Celebration. Our Multiple District
Annual Convention in Hoover, Alabama May 19 – 21, 2017 will also celebrate our 100 years of service. The Multiple District Convention Committee and the Centennial Committee are working together to insure this
will also be an exciting, fun-filled convention and celebration. Festive
decorations, unique displays, Centennial Give-A Ways, presentations
and activities are only part of what is in store for you at our 2017 Multiple
District Convention. With the venue being centrally located in the state
we hope to increase our attendance this year. Wouldn’t it be great to
have 100 attendees from each district to attend the convention in honor
of our 100 years of service?
Whether you celebrate in Chicago, Hoover, or both, 2017 is a
time of great reflection upon our countless acts of service, the lives we
have touched, and how our lives have been touched by serving others.
There has never been a better time to be a Lion than the present. As we
celebrate as Lions let’s remember to include our communities in our
celebrations and recognize the bonds and relationships that have been
built over the years by conducting a Community Legacy Project. A legacy project will not only remind the citizens of how the Lions provided
service and strived to make it a better place to live but it also shows our
appreciation of the tremendous support we receive from our communities that allows us to do what we do best…WE SERVE.
I would like to thank each of you that have participated in a service
project, sponsored a new member, worked with a legacy project or have
in some way contributed to the success of our centennial celebration.
Your service fulfills our centennial motto: Where There Is A Need…There
Is A Lion.
Sincerely,
PCC Ron Seybold

Fellow Lions
I wanted to provide an update on our 100 member BAND initiative. We are getting closer and closer!!!
See below for pledged clubs and donations, by district as of this
writing. We are more than Halfway to our GOAL of 100 students.
We need 39 more sponsorships ASAP. The cutoff date for sponsoring a band student is the end of March, 2017, BUT, in order to plan
and reserve lodging, events, transportation, etc., we need to know
RIGHT NOW how many students the Lions of Alabama want to send
to Chicago.
If I have not included you on the list above, please let me know,
so I can add your name to the list.
The time to ACT is NOW.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s)
• How much does it cost to sponsor a student?
• We are finalizing the amount at this time, but for 100 students,
the amount is $900. Funds can come from ANYWHERE, or ANYONE.
• What type of student are we seeking?
• The typical band student is a sophomore or junior, although
we occasionally see a senior or freshman. Seniors have already
graduated and may not be interested, and freshmen may not be
mature enough for this trip.
• How does a student become a member of the Lions Centennial Band?
• Once funds have been received from, or on behalf of a Lions
Club, the Club specifies the school the student should be from. Our
Band Director contacts your band for an appropriate student, based
upon character, leadership, musical ability and instrumentation
needs of the Lions Band.
