WELCOME to Crawick Multiverse.
The site you stand on today is the
result of a truly unique transformation.
Formerly an open cast coal mine, Crawick
had been abandoned for over 30 years
and was a blot on the beautiful landscape
of Upper Nithsdale. However, landowner
The Duke of Buccleuch saw new potential
and committed £1million to putting
Crawick firmly back on the map as
a world-class artland.
Working with the renowned landscape artist,
theorist and designer, Charles Jencks, the
Multiverse was created using materials found
on site, including thousands of boulders
half-buried below the ground. This striking
landscape represents various cosmic patterns
and combines four opposite ecologies –
grasslands, mountains, a water gorge and a
desert. It takes you on a journey past the Milky
Way to a supercluster of galaxies, and then to
the multiverse. The ‘high road’ up the site is a
ridge walk past comets to the highest point,
a dramatic panorama; while the ‘low road’
is a gentle walk giving you a choice of routes.
We hope you enjoy your visit.

The spiral galaxies, A N D R O M E D A and MI L K Y WAY ,
are represented by towering mounds of earth standing at
20 metres high, with boulders atop each. Unlike most of the
other 100 billion galaxies which are travelling away from us,
Andromeda and the Milky Way are converging at speed and
predicted to meet in four billion years’ time. The result is a
‘cosmic ballet’ shown as the two galaxies strip each other
into long lines of stars and planets.

The S U N A MP H I T H E AT R E – which can hold 5,000 people – is
at the heart of the Crawick Multiverse. It captures the beauty of a
total eclipse, replicating its iconic shapes and forms with a circle of
boulders and ridges, representing the sun. The Amphitheatre faces
due south, and two glittering lagoons add to its magic and drama.
A N O RT H - S O U T H L I N E splits the site down the middle. This 400 metre
path is bordered with large boulders leading you to the site’s northern lookout.
Intersection boulders mark additional pathways, running east and west, while
other large rocks create shelter points from the wind and rain.

The MU LT I V E R S E follows a
corkscrew path constructed from
mudstone composed of black
and white layers. It presents the
whole ensemble of universes, and
the stones are carved with lines
symbolising different types of
universe, and their different fates.

In classical Greece and
Jerusalem the OM P H AL OS
is the centre, or navel, of the
world. Here on the outside
v-shaped silhouettes frame
the cliff scallop overhead,
while on the inside special
rocks signify the mythical and
actual centre of the Earth.
The S U P E R C L U S T E R of galaxies shows the larger
structure to which the Milky Way and Andromeda belong.
Here it features a distinctive pattern of abstract triangles
which aim south-west to create similar shadow patterns.
Holding these vast structures together are the ‘rivers of
gravity’ marked as grey pathways between galaxies.

point, and also on the south-west and south-east axes. Not only do
they protect from the strong winds, rain and sun, but these boulders
show the violent and creative collisions of comets and asteroids,
which bring water, and maybe transport life around the universe.
Whilst all reasonable measures have been taken to ensure the
safety of visitors and to provide information and warning signs,
each adult visitor has a responsibility for their own safety and for
the safety of their fellow visitors whilst on site.
