Back to School!
Our Baptismal call is to a lifelong
spiritual journey and continual
development of our faith. Growing in
holiness and discipleship involves a
willingness to continue to learn
throughout one’s whole life about the
faith and how to live it.
We are invited to deepen our spiritual
and moral lives and to develop
households where all will know and love
Jesus Christ and follow in his way.
Take advantage of the many learning
opportunities offered around you. Study
scripture and read the Catechism, listen
to the Lighthouse CD’s or Catholic radio,
watch EWTN, spend time in Eucharistic
Adoration, and attend the Rediscover
Catholic Celebration offered this
October in Minneapolis. Many of us
share in a common statistic among
Catholics - that we have not advanced
in the education of our faith much past
the 8th grade! Where are you on your
personal faith journey? Are you able
to answer questions about the Catholic
faith from co-workers? or your children?
Our Eucharistic Adoration chapel is open for individuals to come
for 5 minutes or an hour and be with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Our chapel hours are: Tuesday 9:00 AM to Thursday 9:00
AM (closes during daily Mass and Funeral Masses).

From the Pastor’s Desk
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Please welcome our visiting priests this weekend. Fr. Troy
Przybilla is the Archdiocesan Vocations Director and will be
celebrating the 10:00 AM Mass at St. Mary’s. Fr. Patrick Barnes is
the pastor at the Church of St. Nicholas in Elko New Market and
will be celebrating the 12:00 PM Mass in Spanish. I thank them
both for offering to celebrate these Masses while I am in Faribault
installing their new pastor. Some of you may recall that one of the
Archdiocesan roles that I have had for the past four years is as
Dean of the southwest deanery of parishes – in addition to planning
monthly meetings with area clergy, one of the responsibilities of
this position is to be the Archbishop’s delegate in officially
installing pastors in their positions when they are assigned to a new
parish in our area.
This weekend our nation celebrates Labor Day, the unofficial end
of summer and the transition point into fall activities, including
school, sports, and other community activities. Labor Day
weekend, while typically a time to relax one last time at the lake or
the pool, is also a time to reflect on Catholic teaching about the role
of work in society and in God’s plan for mankind, focusing on
Catholic social teaching on labor and the dignity of workers.
Catholic teaching has a positive view of labor, seeing it as the
means by which we are co-creators in God’s ongoing creation,
building up the kingdom of God in our daily work. By taking the
raw materials provided by God, we transform them into something
useful. For example, we take the wheat that grows and transform it
into bread, we take the cotton and transform it into clothing, we
take the trees that grow and transform them into homes and
furniture. We do amazing things with what God has given us!
Have you ever considered that in doing so, we are working
alongside God? When we realize that we are coworkers with God
Himself, it changes how we approach our work, and we recommit
to giving our very best at the work we do.
All workers share in this co-creation of goods. It’s not just laborers
in the field. All workers—from farmers, to insurance agents,
distributors, salesmen, and cooks—share in the process of
transforming the raw goods of the earth into something useful by
society. We all have an important part to play. And Labor Day is a
time to reflect on the responsibility each of us have in the process.
Ultimately, in considering the work we do, it’s said that we are not
meant to have an “I just take care of myself” mentality. The work
we do, no matter what kind of work it is, participates in the care of
all. Do the best job you can at the work you do, knowing that God
has endowed your work with dignity and worth!
Have a blessed Labor Day weekend and a blessed start to school
and other fall activities!
God bless,
Fr. Chris Shofner

It is appropriate at this time of the year to
pray in a special way for all our children as
they head back to their studies and school
activities. We pray for their physical safety
as well as for the protection of their souls. We pray that
they will glorify God in their successes as well as in their
failures. And may their families and community be a constant
source of unconditional love and support.
Faith Formation
Time to register for Faith Formation Classes! Forms have
been mailed to all those who were enrolled last year. Additional
forms are available at all Parish entrances. Classes begin on
Wednesday, September 17th for students in their classrooms
and a mandatory meeting for Parents at the beginning of each
session.
Volunteers are needed, of course. Don’t wait to be
asked! Please contact Colleen or a board member to explore
how you can participate in the program – and receive a discount
on tuition fees. We work to accommodate a variety of schedules,
duties and age preferences. Come forward and learn along with
the students! God will bless your efforts!
New this year –
 Kindergarten classes will be held one Wednesday per month
during the Early Session. Dates are listed on the registration
forms.
 No Wednesday suppers this year due to the small numbers
of participants the last two years versus the expense of this
program. Students in the Early Session will still have a small
snack in the classroom.
 We will have a section of 5th grade in the Early Session and a
section of 4th grade in the Late Session. Families will be
contacted this week to be given that option with children of
volunteers having the first choice.
 Our first night – September 17th – will have students go
directly to their classrooms and Parents go into the church
for a mandatory meeting.
Our First Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be on Sunday,
September 21st at the 10am Mass. No registration
needed. Students aged 3 through/including Kindergarten are
invited to come forward when Father calls them after the Opening
Prayer.
We are blessed to have the following people represent our Faith
Formation Board ~ Jennifer Blaschko, Eric Closser, Gail
Beer, Megan Holicky, Sheila Huber, Hayley Hunt, Holly O’Malley,
Amanda Sladek and Cris Young.
VIRTUS Training on Wednesday, September 10th at 6:00pm
in the St. Mary’s Social Hall. We are fortunate to have this very
important, one-time training for all volunteers who have “either
regular or unsupervised contact with minors”. This free training
evening is open to all parishioners, parents and even older
teens. Go to http://www.virtus.org/virtus and click on
‘Registration’ on the left column. For those not online, paper
forms are available in our Parish Office. VIRTUS is the brand
name that identifies best practices and programs designed to
help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within
religious organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower
organizations and people to better control risk and improve the
lives of all those who interact with the Church.
Paul said: “I urge you, then - I who am a prisoner because I
serve the Lord: live a life that measures up to the standard God
set when he called you. Be always humble, gentle, and
patient. Show your love by being tolerant with one
another.” Ephesians 4:1-2

Minnesota taxpayers have been required to fund elective
abortions since the MN Supreme Court’s 1995 Doe v.
Gomez ruling. In fact, over 33% of all abortions reported
in MN are paid for by taxpayers. In 2012, for which the
most recent figures are available, taxpayers were billed
over $820,000 by the abortion industry for taking the lives
of low-income women’s unborn children. 3,571 innocent
babies did not live to see the light of day.
The fifth Commandment states: Thou shall not kill. Please
pray for the ending of abortion. Contact your legislator.
Ask him to put an end to taxpayer funding of abortion.
