INTRODUCTION TripAdvisor, the most trusted source for where to eat, sleep and play in thousands of destinations around the world, has collected the best insider tips from its 50 million monthly visitors to produce a unique series of travel guides. In addition to the best hotels, restaurants and attractions for every type of traveler, you’ll get great advice about what to pack, how to get around and where to find the best views. Be sure to check out the guides at www.tripadvisor.com. Inside HIDDEN YUCATAN You’ll find reviews for more than 520,000 hotels, 125,000 vacation rentals, 155,000 attractions and 715,000 restaurants on TripAdvisor.com. Learn from other travelers what to expect before you make your plans. PACKING TIPS 1. Don’t forget your passport—even for travel from the United States. It’s required for all air and sea border crossings. 2. “Take protein bars in case you’re somewhere remote, and good food isn’t available.”—TripAdvisor Member 3. Sturdy waterproof sandals are good for trekking and also protect feet from rocks and coral along the beaches. 4. “Hats or bandanas are a must” to prevent sunburn on day hikes.—TripAdvisor Member, Maine 5. “If you have a preferred brand of sunscreen or repellent, bring it. “— TripAdvisor Member, Tulum Bypass the spring breakers downing frozen margaritas in Cancun. Look beyond the sun worshippers in Playa del Carmen. Yucatan Peninsula locales like Tulum, Akumal, Chetumal, Chichen Itza and Merida offer an authentic taste of Mexico and its people. The Yucatan’s dry season, which lasts from November to May, brings the most pleasant weather for tourists. The average temperatures are lower, as is the humidity. The hot, humid rainy season lasts from May to October and may occasionally bring severe weather, such as hurricanes. Precipitation can occur every day, especially along the coast, although in the heat of the Yucatan summer, the cooling rain can be a blessing. Akumal and the more Caribbean-style Chetumal, near the border of Belize, deliver delectable white-sand beaches and great snorkeling. Merida, Chichen Itza and Tulum, with their ancient ruins, offer passage into the Yucatan’s native history. Nature lovers can trek in the jungle and swim in the abundant cenotes, the subterranean sink holes filled with crystal clear water that dot the peninsula. Although cruise ship passengers and day trippers have infiltrated some of these out-of-the-way spots, they only have a few hours per stop. Abandon the time clock and spend a few nights (or weeks) around these towns and discover the beat of the Hidden Yucatan. tripadvisor.com 2 Top VIEWS HIDDEN YUCATAN’S BEST VIEWS “Celestun is a sleepy fishing village” where “the sunsets are spectacular.”—TripAdvisor Member, Olmsted Falls, Ohio Celestun, 60 miles southwest of Merida Climb 136 feet to the top of Nohoch Mul, the highest pyramid at the ancient Maya ruins of Coba. “The stairs were steep, but we made it and were glad we did, since we had one of the most amazing views!”— TripAdvisor Member, Rabat, Morocco “The view from the top of the Maya ruins of Tulum is breathtaking and beautiful.
