2016 Annual Report - American Red Cross

ANNUAL REPORT 2016
A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
From July of 2015 through June 2016, the American Red Cross of Western and Central
New York completed its first full year as a combined region. The stability we have
gained by working together as a team is evidenced by our ability to deliver our services
to so many. Not only were our volunteers and disaster staff there for 1,397 local families
to provide comfort and direction after a house fire, we also prepared over 4,000
households to prevent fires by installing smoke alarms and offering fire safety
instruction. More military servicemen and women received services from the Red Cross
than ever before; while over 600 active duty families in our region received emergency
communications, travel clearances, and/or financial assistance, another 846 were provided with non-emergency
services and post-deployment resiliency workshops. In addition, 39 families were reunited with loved ones thanks
to our International Services program, while over 450,000 people across New York State benefitted from the
156,000+ blood donations made by Western and Central New Yorkers. Seventy eight thousand people learned
life-saving skills at classes offered throughout our footprint, while over 800,000 Western and Central New Yorkers
downloaded life-saving mobile apps.
Fiscal Year 2016 also yielded an organization-wide surplus of $40 million due to more efficient staff models in all
three of our lines of service (Biomed, Health and Safety, and Humanitarian Services). As you can see from some of
the information on the next page, this savings is being reinvested in improved service, growing our volunteer base,
and increasing the productivity of our service tools and software to extend our reach. (Full financial statements are
available at www.redcross.org/about-us/who-we-are/governance.)
Here in the Region, we were able to combine the energies of our chapter Board members with those of former
Board members of the NY Penn Blood Region, who formed committees to oversee increased turnout at area blood
drives while better aligning with our corporate community to offer both financial support and employee engagement
opportunities. These leadership volunteers, along with a host of other fundraising volunteers, also assisted in making
our special events – including Bash, Casting for Caring, our Real Heroes Breakfasts, and the State Fair Parking lot
– all profitable.
As for our volunteers, we continue to be blessed by the dedication to our mission. 53 volunteers deployed to Texas,
California, Canada, and other distances during the first six months of 2016 to assist with a host of high level
disasters that required many, many hands to provide relief to people after floods and wild fires.
None of these activities would be possible without the generous support of our donors, who put the mission of the
Red Cross and our organizational needs on the “front burner” of their philanthropy. Fiscal year 2017 is in full swing
and we are pleased to see continued growth in the number of people we serve with our mission. Faster responses,
more relevant financial support, and lives saved!
Your support makes it possible.
With great thanks,
Rosie Taravella, Regional CEO

“THE BENEFITS CAN’T BE PUT INTO WORDS”
Sarah Perkins began her Red Cross journey back in 2005 when, as a recent
retiree, she wanted to help those devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
“After researching the American Red Cross, I decided that was the best fit for all
my life’s experiences, training, and interests,” said Perkins, a military veteran. She
began volunteering in September 2005, and was deployed to New Orleans two
weeks later, “with no training!”
11 years and 50 deployments later, Perkins is now the one doing the training.
The Pittsford resident was called upon eight times last year to provide her
disaster assessment skills and expertise during relief operations following
disasters including wildfires in California, flooding in South Carolina and
tornadoes in Louisiana.
“I get so much out of each deployment, each opportunity to serve,” Perkins says.
“Exercising my leadership skills to form cohesive, well-functioning disaster
assessment teams that go out and do what they do so well, collecting the most
information for decision makers so the Red Cross response delivers what is
needed, where it is needed, when it is needed, invigorates and energizes me.”
Perkins shows no signs of slowing down, and with the Western and Central New HIGHLIGHTS FROM FY 2016
York Region having deployed 130 volunteers to national disasters in addition to
our work locally last year, she hopes more volunteers will join her.
3,732 Dedicated
“As long as there is a need, as long as there are disasters and people suffer loss,
are hungry, suddenly homeless because of disaster, and in need of immediate
relief and support, I will continue to serve,” Perkins says. “I am compelled to share
this life-changing opportunity with others, to help them understand every person
can and should serve in any way they choose to make even one person’s life
better, even if only for one moment in time. The benefits of such service can’t be
put into words.”

Not all of the nearly 4,000 Western and Central New York volunteers are able to
leave home eight times a year to help strangers in need like Sarah, but they all
share the same desire to help their community. For more information on the many
volunteer opportunities the Red Cross has to offer, please visit
www.redcross.org/local/new-york/western-central-new-york/volunteer.
TEACHING INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW
The Western and Central New York region received a $4,800 grant from National
Headquarters (NHQ) for last year’s International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Action
Campaign, where youth learn about IHL and create and implement their own
campaign to teach their community about the rules of war as set by the Geneva
Conventions. Teams from Cornell University, Elmira College, Mercy HS and New
Roots Charter School reached over 700 people. In addtion, our region hosted
the IHL Action Campaign “Training of Trainers” in Syracuse. This was an amazing
achievement for our region as NHQ delegated us to manage this training for 13
regional leads across the east coast.
The IHL Action Campaign is just one of the many ways the American Red Cross
is taking action to help save lives around the world. To learn more about the many
International Services we provide, visit

SUPPORT IN FRIGHTENING SITUATIONS
Imagine finding out a loved one has been trapped in a mine, with a rescue
operation underway. Where would you go for support and information? For the
relatives of 17 miners at the Cargill Salt Mine near Ithaca in January 2016, they
went to a Red Cross reception center at All Saints Church in Lansing, where
volunteers provided refreshments and support as they waited for news.
Eventually, all 17 miners were rescued, and many were reunited with their families
at the reception center.
“One by one, they came in, and they stayed around until everybody was
accounted for,” volunteer Steve Tamas told the Ithaca Journal. “It was quite a
sight, how they got reunited with their family.”
The miners were trapped in the cold elevator for about ten hours. While they
huddled together, their families had the support of Red Cross volunteers during a
HIGHLIGHTS FROM FY 2016
very emotional time.
“The emotional component can make all the difference in how you recover,” said
Disaster Mental Health volunteer Peggy McGee-Smith, who has helped provide
emotional support after disasters including the Alberta, Canada wildfires and the
Orlando nightclub shooting. “If we pay enough attention to where they’re at, let
them know we really do care, we can make differences for them in small ways, it
can make all the difference in their recovery.”
The Red Cross makes emotional support available at every disaster it responds
to, from single family house fires to hurricanes affecting thousands. At the Cargill
reception center, that recovery was made easier as reunions began.
“You could tell the look of relief on their faces: ‘Oh, it’s finally over,’” Tamas told
the newspaper. When the last miner was rescued, there was a “collective sigh of
relief.”
The Red Cross responds to an emergency every eight minutes. For more
information, visit www.redcross.org/about-us/our-work/disaster-relief.

PARTNERING TO MAKE OUR COMMUNITY SAFER
Time Warner Cable often reports on the work of the American Red Cross during
their news broadcasts. Now some of their employees are doing more than
sharing our stories, they’re helping create them.
In May 2016, Time Warner employees in Auburn and Oswego trained to become
Home Fire Campaign smoke-alarm installers. These new volunteers are helping
fill requests made by families throughout Onondaga, Oswego, Madison, Cortland
and Cayuga counties to have free smoke alarms installed in their homes.
You have as little as two minutes to safely escape your home in a fire, and
working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in half. Since launching in 2014,
the Home Fire Campaign has saved more than 110 lives by providing smoke
alarms and fire safety information for families in high-risk areas.
The Home Fire Campaign is generously supported in Western New York by
National Fire Adjustment Company, Inc. (NFA). For more information, visit

“IF IT WASN’T FOR BLOOD...”
Jan Schichtel has been volunteering as a Blood Services Donor Ambassador
with the Western and Central New York Region since 2007. However, her
connection to the Red Cross goes much deeper.
“In October, 1982, I had a kidney transplant,” Jan remembers. “Before the
transplant, I was on Hemodialysis for almost two years. I received 47 units of
blood. They didn’t have the same medications back then that they do now. The
transfusions were the only way they could keep me functioning.”
Due to the transplant and medications, Jan is unable to donate blood herself, but
that hasn’t stopped her from giving back. She and her husband began organizing
blood drives at their large parish in Long Island for 17 years. When they retired
and moved to Olean to be closer to her husband’s family, she reached out to the
Red Cross and offered to be a part of blood drives.
“I’m able to share my story at the canteen,” Jan says. “I let them know, from a
person who’s been there, how important blood is, the difference it makes in the
life of the person receiving it as well as their families.”
Jan tells students at drives hosted by high schools that her transplant is now
twice as old as they are. She finds that donors are amazed that her transplant
has lasted that long, and she tells them how the blood she received was the only
way doctors could keep her functioning leading up to her transplant.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM FY 2016
156,185 Blood
donations from
volunteer donors
“I try to impress on people that I live my life in honor of my organ donor and their
family for the gift of life,” she says. “That carries out to the blood donors as well. If
it wasn’t for blood, I never would’ve made it to get the transplant.”
Jan hopes that donors that hear her story while donating blood will share it with
their families, so that in the future they’ll think about the impact donating has on
lives. Every successful blood donation can help save up to three lives. To learn
more and to schedule a donation, please visit www.redcrossblood.org.

RECOGNIZING EXTRAORDINARY PERSONAL ACTIONS
Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere. Every second counts in those
situations, and the skills taught at Red Cross Health & Safety Classes can prove
vital while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive. RED Rochester
Refrigeration/Water employee Gene Bernardo learned that lesson first hand.
Shortly after his team started their shift, Gene found his coworker, Ed Szozda,
unresponsive. He immediately started CPR, directed another coworker to call
911 and deployed their Department’s new automated external defibrillator (AED).
Ryan Clair, Mike Defendorf, Patrick Doerrer and Rod Speer of the Kodak Park
Fire Department (KPFD) took it from there, applying medical attention until Ed
could be transported to the local hospital, where successful heart surgery was
completed that morning.
Medical professionals credit Gene and the Kodak Park Fire Department with
saving Ed’s life, as the first minutes of this type of situation are the most critical.
On January 15, 2016, the American Red Cross was proud to present Certificates
of Extraordinary Personal Action to Gene Bernardo, Ryan Clair, Mike Defendorf,
Patrick Doerrer and Rod Speer. The Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action
is awarded to individuals who save or sustain a life by action that exemplifies the
mission of Red Cross Preparedness and Health & Safety Services.
If you’d like to learn how to perform CPR, use an AED, or other skills that may
help save the life of someone you love, visit www.redcross.org/take-a-class, or
contact Ken Vorie at 716-878-2148 or [email protected] to schedule a
training at your school, business or organization.

GROWING SUPPORT FOR OUR VETERANS
For over 130 years, the American Red Cross has provided comfort and
support to military members, veterans, and their families. At the VA Medical
Center in Bath, that support included a garden project to help our military heroes
at the facility with rehabilitation, mental health and stress reduction techniques.
“Even with my disease, I can still get outside and contribute,” says Air Force
Veteran Robert Snyder. “It’s a lot of fun.”
The garden project, a partnership of the Red Cross and the Medical Center’s
Voluntary Services program, has also donated more than 600 pounds of
vegetables to support the community through the Catholic Charities Food Bank.
The Red Cross recently launched the new Hero Care mobile app, designed to
help members of the military, veterans and their families connect to vital services
and find valuable resources that will help alleviate stress during emergencies and
provide important information right at their fingertips. Content in the Hero Care
App is available in both English and Spanish, and the call center is staffed 24/7
with multi-lingual translation services.
The Hero Care App is available to download for free in app stores, by texting
‘GETHEROCARE’ to 90999 or by clicking on the following link from a mobile
device: http://3cu.be/sharehc.
