The andprint Headlines Issue 5 7 October 2016 At this time of year many families are considering which secondary school to select for September 2016. We have held four open mornings where hundreds of families have come in to see the school in action. The comments received from our visitors have been overwhelming and affirm the outstanding ethos at the school. Our student guides were amazing and clearly love their school and love showing it off to visitors. A very big thank you to everyone for spending time with families and helping them to understand more about Sandringham School. On Wednesday evening Year 7 families came in for the Parents’ Forum, giving us valuable feedback on things that have gone well in the first four weeks at Sandringham and what can be done to improve further. The comments were very positive and helped to identify a few things that we can do differently to make the school even better for young people. Thank you for coming in and spending time with us. Rehearsals for the main school show, ‘Vaudeville’ are going well and this will be a show not to be missed. It is to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the SandPit Theatre. You can purchase tickets from the box office as usual, and it is probably best to get them early to avoid missing out. Dates of the show are Thursday 17th – Saturday 19th November 2016. Look forward to seeing you there. The PE faculty have been very busy at the start of the season coaching teams in a number of disciplines ready for matches. You can read all the reports in the sports section of the Sandprint. There have been a large number of successes already and I would like to congratulate the students on their achievements. German Exchange 2016/17 The students and staff of Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Gymnasium arrived last Thursday to spend a week with their exchange partners from Sandringham. The exchange started in 2009 and has been a key part of the MFL calendar since then with many students and families setting up life-long friendships over the years. The combined group spent a day at Oxford, seeing the Treasury of the Bodleian library where the English students were excited to see the original manuscript by Wilfred Owen’s famous poem, ‘Dulce et decorum est’ with annotations, which they have just studied at school. The weekend was spent with families and Monday and Tuesday in lessons at school including a Food Tech lesson, courtesy of Mrs Flahive. On Wednesday, the German group visited the Tower of London and had a ride on a London bus to see the sights. The pizza party on Wednesday night brought the successful week to a close before the German group left for Hamburg on Thursday. We will look forward to the return trip next July and in the meantime, watch out for letters for next year’s exchange if you want to benefit from this wonderful opportunity of experiencing another culture from the inside and not as a tourist. Bryce Breen again won the Inter boys race with Elliot Breen, Evan Howgego and Alex Smith all once again placing in the top 10. This week we race at Verulam in the final league match before the District Championship next week. On Saturday the Y7, 8 and 9 Rugby teams played Latymer School with the 8 and 9’s at home and the 7’s travelling for their first game at the school. The Y7’s were superb winning 7 tries to 1 with Harrison Taylor impressing Mr Chopra greatly. The Y8’s got off to a great start with Will Huke dominating the game and eventually taking the win 29-24. The Y9’s continue their winning streak with a 26-17 win with tries from Tom Byrne, Matt Hilton and 2 from Jack Kelly. The Y10 boys basketball team played St. Columbas in the District League on Monday and once again have shown signs of improvement. Their offence was quick and Carlos Romero-Martinez was again a force under the basket. Columbas were as strong as always and took the game away from us in the second half. A good performance from the team and more positive signs that the team are progressing this year. A huge well done to the U14 Badminton Team who became District Champions on Tuesday in the tournament held at Verulam School. The A team of Andre Raath, Evan Williams, Tom Byrne and Alex Smith were superb, especially after losing their first match. They went on to win the tournament and will now represent the District in the County tournament at the end of this year. The B team of Johnny Parker, Ivan Raath, Ryan O’Sullivan and Luke Hensman were also very strong and narrowly lost their games 3-2 in every round. Well done to both teams and a huge thank you should go to Ilze Raath for helping take the team on Tuesday. In addition, Andre has been selected for the 14u Hertfordshire County team to represent the County at the Hildon 12 Counties Championships 2016 – 2017 on Saturday 15th October in Corby. Four boys have been selected for the team, which demonstrates the level Andre is playing at. Congratulations to Katie Weaver, Katie Holder and Amalie Newman-Booth on their U14 County Football selection this year. They were all successful in making the squad and have all been picked for the team’s first game versus Essex. Also, well done again to Jack McShane, Ben Kirby, Jude James, Ryan Orde, Jack de Groot and Jake Clarke on again representing the District in the Inter-District Football competition. In what was a thrilling game, the Y7 football team went to Essex to play Davenant School away in the English Schools National Cup. The team went 2-0 up before conceding 3. In the last minute of normal time the team equalised to send the game to extra time. In the additional period no goal was scored and the game went to a penalty shoot-out. On 3 occasions after taking the first penalty Davenant had the opportunity to win the game, however Matthew Mcree in goal was the hero and denied the home team victory before Mattie Hargreaves scored the winning penalty. On Monday the Y9 girls played their County Cup football game V STAGS. We conceded an early goal, however this seemed to wake the Sandringham girls up and with a lot of determination and excellent play, we scored 3 goals, with 2 coming from Katie Weaver and 1 from Amalie Newman-Booth. We went into the second half leading 3-1, but we got complacent and STAGS had several shots on goal, scoring a further 2 times. Daisy Charnock made some fabulous saves to keep us in the game, with the score at full time 3-3, taking it to extra time, where unfortunately STAGS scored another goal, meaning that they won the game 4-3. Player of the match was Daisy Charnock for some fantastic keeping, but notable mentions must go to Katie Weaver, Katie Holder and Amalie Newman-Booth, who were all outstanding. A depleted senior squad travelled to St George's School to play in the County League. The girls played fantastically, with some excellent passing and defending, putting the opposition under constant pressure. Emma Goldingay and Francesca Boost stepped up from Year 11 to play in the game and both were brilliant, really holding their own on court. Charlotte Nichol was outstanding as Goal Shooter, showing accuracy and incredible spacing. St George's put up a good fight, but in the end, Sandringham were victorious, beating them 28-15. Well played to all of the girls. MVP: Francesca Boost.
