CONCON-AID / CBR PLUS in Haul Roads
Haul roads forms an important part in the transport industry. They are
used mainly in opencast mining, forestry and sugarcane operations.
Haul trucks with tare of 60 tonnes and a payload of 150 tonnes are
commonly used in the opencast mining industry. While forestry and
sugar cane estates used logging- and fire fighting trucks in excess of 25
tonnes.
CON-AID has extensive experience in assisting in maintenance of haul
road projects.
SOME OF THE PROBLEMS:
Due to the size of the haul trucks used in the mining industry roads up
to 30 meters wide and more are required. Drainage and maintenance is
often difficult and costly.
The gooseneck of articulated haulers are very sensitive to unevenness
and roughness of the road and blade maintenance is continuously
required.
During dry seasons dust is the major problem contributing to driver
fatigue.
During rainy weather slipperiness and deformation becomes the major
problems creating loss of productivity.
Because of the high tyre pressure and heat generation by the wheels
normal bitumen seals are unsuitable and a natural soil or gravel surface
is accepted.
CON-AID / CBR PLUS – spray-on technique:
CON-AID / CBR PLUS has been successfully used on natural gravel roads
to reduce maintenance cost in:
•
•
•
Grading.
Minimizing application of water for dust preventions.
Increase production during rainy seasons.
Haul roads in the mining industry is designed and constructed
conventionally to carry abnormal loads.

CBR PLUS
CON-AID
CON-AID / CBR PLUS is applied in small quantities on the surface by
using a water tanker normally used for dust control.
This surface treatment has
the following purposes:
•
•
CON-AID / CBR PLUS
reduce the amount of
dust produced by
vehicles, therefore
reduce the number of
water spraying
operations for
example from four
application per day to one per day.
After a relatively short period the road surface becomes more
negotiable during rainy weather, which results in less grading.
Grading is reduced on a road from ten times to one over a certain
period, thus result in maintenance cost savings.
It should be clearly understood that when heavy vehicles used a haul
road frequently such roads should be designed and constructed
according to engineering requirements. CON-AID / CBR PLUS can only
successfully used in the top layer.
In most cases where roads are being used the surface is reasonably
maintained and in fair condition. In such cases there is no need to
break up the surface to introduce CON-AID / CBR PLUS and the spray-on
technique may be used. Small amounts of CON-AID are put into the
water tanker when wetting the surface as for dust suppression. Normal

CON-AID
procedure is CON-AID treated water one day followed by pure water
application the next day. This alternative spraying is continued until
the prescribed amount of CON-AID has been applied.
These remarks apply to existing roads with a sound substructure.
