SIRIS 2 Virtual SIRIS:
Datto Virtual SIRIS brings intelligent business
continuity to virtual environments through the
most robust and flexible hybrid cloud
architecture in the market. As the newest
member of the SIRIS 2 family, Virtual SIRIS is
designed for mission critical virtual environments
where downtime is not an option and an
aggressive recovery time objective (RTO) is
essential.
Datto SIRIS 2 is the only Backup
and Disaster Recovery (BDR) and
Intelligent Business Continuity
solution to offer instant local and off
-site virtualization, Screenshot
Backup Verification,™ and Backup
Insights™ all from one simple
management interface.
The addition of Virtual SIRIS to the
SIRIS 2 product family is the next
step in Datto’s mission to eliminate
downtime across all environments.
The solution is built on the same
core software and interface that is
found in the award-winning physical
SIRIS appliances, however, it is
deployed as a virtual appliance.
Leveraging an existing virtual
platform simplifies configurations
and lowers costs because the
virtual appliance is able to run on
the same platform, as well as use
the same pool of resources, as the
existing virtual infrastructure.
Designed to take advantage of the
proven reliability and centralized
resource management of VMware’s
industry leading hypervisor, the
initial release of Virtual SIRIS is
compatible with VMware ESXi
versions 5.1 and 5.5.
Virtual Appliance
Virtual SIRIS is an easy to download virtual appliance that is deployed on a
hypervisor as a virtual machine (VM). It lets users protect both virtual and physical
Windows systems on the network. Virtual SIRIS features the same capabilities that
have made SIRIS and SIRIS 2 industry standards for business continuity.
(See Figure 1)
Image-Based Backup
All Datto SIRIS 2 solutions use image-based backup technology to take a complete
picture of the workstation or server. Advantages include quick full system restores,
easy recovery of individual files, bare metal restores (BMR) capability, and the ability
to boot individual backups as virtual machines. (See Figure 2)
Screenshot Backup Verification
No more guessing if your backup is working properly. Virtual SIRIS on all SIRIS 2
solutions boots backups as virtual machines, capturing an image of the login page to
give you visual proof that your data has been successfully backed up. An industry
first. (See Figure 3)

Instant Local Virtualization
When a business experiences a server failure, Virtual SIRIS can instantly boot a
virtual copy of that server on the host. From there, the business can either continue
running the virtual copy in place of the production server, or, if the disabled server
was part of a physical configuration, Virtual SIRIS can restore the image back to the
repaired bare metal environment. In the face of downtime, the solution ensures a
“business as usual” experience for users on the network.
Figure: 2
A key competitive advantage of Virtual SIRIS is that it deploys failover VMs as true
guests on the host through a process called new guest virtualization. This is in direct
contrast to an alternative process, used by competitors, called nested virtualization,
which entails deploying failover VMs within a third party hypervisor that is already
running within the host hypervisor. The major benefits of new guests are that they
perform better than nested VMs, and that resources can be allocated to them, initially
and on the fly, without the need to reboot the Virtual SIRIS appliance.
Instant Off-Site Virtualization
Datto protects clients from site-wide outages using instant off-site virtualization. In the
event of a local disaster like a fire or flood, the entire network can be recreated in the
secure Datto cloud in a matter of minutes. Secure connections are provided to
employees and a business can resume normal operations.
Hybrid Cloud
Figure: 3
Virtual SIRIS utilizes a Hybrid Cloud architecture, meaning that it stores backups
locally on the virtual appliance before automatically replicating backups to the secure
Datto cloud. User data and systems are always restorable in this secure model
because the virtual appliance is capable of rapid recovery directly on the hypervisor,
while the cloud provides redundant recovery options in the case of a disaster.
In contrast, local-only backup solutions can be rendered useless by site disasters,
theft, network outages and hardware failures. Cloud-only solutions are also at a
disadvantage because they are dependent on bandwidth speeds, which makes them
prone to time-consuming recovery processes.
eDiscovery Software
eDiscovery gives Datto users the ability to search keywords within their backup
data, emails, and attachments and review in an easy to read format. Powered
by the industry-leading Kroll On-Track software, it is compatible with dozens of
file formats and systems including Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint.

ShadowSnapTM
Virtual
SIRIS
Datto utilizes the image-based ShadowSnap™ agent, developed in conjunction
with StorageCraft. ShadowSnap is based on the premise of dual backup
engines: application-aware VSS by default, with the engine as a safety net.
ShadowSnap is particularly useful in performing bare metal restores as it
supports dissimilar hardware.
End-to-End Encryption
All data is protected by AES-256 encryption both in transit and in the cloud.
Additionally, users have the option to encrypt data locally, and passphrases
can be specified per appliance or per protected machine to meet compliance
regulations. (See Figure 4)
Bare Metal Restore
Figure: 4
Datto’s end-to-end encryption prevents data viewing,
tampering or theft during the entire continuity process.
Restore full machines quickly and efficiently through our Bare Metal Restore
(BMR) process. Kick the process off with a PXE (network) boot, or just image a
USB thumb drive with the included wizard. Go from physical machines to virtual
(P2V) or vice versa (V2P) with our unique dissimilar hardware tool that allows
for maximum flexibility when restoring. No drives or cables are needed as the
process runs over the local network.
Backup Insights
Would you like the power to see what happened in between backup points?
Has an mployee ever asked to find a folder that was deleted, and you need to
know when? Or, do you need to determine which files were affected by a virus?
Datto’s proprietary Backup Insights can give you the answers you need, fast.
Backup Insights has the ability to identify file and application changes between
any two backup points. It recovers files and applications directly from the
interface with almost no information about when they were lost or even where
on the machine they resided. Users can intelligently track trends over time to
see what files have been created, modified and deleted. This tool is extremely
easy to use and can be accessed right from the user interface. In a matter of
seconds you can simultaneously mount points and see all files broken down
with an easy to read file tree. (See Figure 5)
Inverse Chain TechnologyTM
Figure: 5
Datto’s proprietary Inverse Chain Technology eliminates the problem of broken
backup chains – the place where most issues arise in the backup process.
Each time a backup occurs data is saved in a universal virtual file format
(VMDK). These backups are not dependent on previous snapshots, giving you
the freedom to change retention and delete snapshots without resetting the
chain or having to take a new base image. Since each backup is a fully
bootable virtual machine, there is no need for complex, time-consuming
conversion processes before performing a restore. Data is always available
immediately, both on and off-site, for near-instantaneous recovery and
virtualization.
