Meet Artie
Beat and
his friends
Artie’s a heart health
superhero. He works
at BHF headquarters.
Aarjun is sporty. He likes
anything to do with running,
jumping and climbing.
Together they are Artie and
friends. They can save the day,
whatever the problem.
2
Rochelle’s good at science.
She knows everything
about how your body works.
Brooke loves playing
outside and she is always
prepared for anything.
Connor is a fruit and veg
fan. He’s an expert on
having a balanced diet.
3
Artie and friends were relaxing
at BHF headquarters when a
message came in on Artie’s
health hotline.
“Here we go!” said Connor
“Is everyone ready for
another emergency?”
4
5
“This is from a museum manager”
said Artie. “She says that no one goes
to her museum anymore and it’s going
to shut down! She says there’s only
one thing that can save the museum
and she needs our help!”
“Right!” said Aarjun,
“Let’s get going!”
6
7
“Thank goodness you’ve come”
said the museum manager.
“Only you can save the museum from
being closed down! There’s a priceless
ruby heart lost somewhere in the
museum, so I thought of you guys. It’s
really ancient and if we can find it, loads
of people will want to come and see it.”
“Don’t worry,” said Brooke,
“I’m sure we can find it!”
8
9
Artie and his friends looked under
stairs, in cupboards and on top of
display cases, but they had no luck.
“It looks like a little crossword
puzzle” she said, “We have
to write in four words to find
a secret password.”
Artie read out the riddle.
“I’m so tired” said Rochelle
as she leaned against an
ancient mummy. Suddenly it
moved! And stuck on the back
there was a small dusty note.
“And that’s a picture of a
Viking helmet” said Brooke.
“It must mean that we should
go to the Viking room!”
10
11
When they got to the Viking room
Artie and his friends looked at all
the displays. They saw a helmet
with a note under it.
“The heart pumps me round
and round?” said Artie,
“What can that be?” Everyone
started to think very hard.
“I know” said Rochelle all of a
sudden, “it’s blood! You have blood
pumped around every part of your
body! The word must be blood!”
Artie wrote ‘blood’ in the first
row of the crossword. Then
they went to find the skeleton.
12
13
When they got to the skeleton
room Artie and his friends looked
for the plastic human one.

“Here it is!” said Aarjun,
“But what’s that sticking
out of his hat?”
They found a rolled up piece
of paper and read it out.

“I know what that is” said Connor,
“an invisible gas that gets carried by
blood is oxygen! We breathe oxygen
into our lungs all the time.”
A rtie wrote ‘oxygen’ in the crossword.
“We’ve got 2 words now – only 2 more
to go!” he said.
“That looks like a picture
of a Greek urn to me – it’s
a kind of vase. Let’s head
for the Greek room, quick!”
14
15
In the Greek room Artie and his
friends looked everywhere for the
urn. Finally they found it. It had the
third riddle sticking out of the top.
onnor read out the next riddle.
C
Everyone went silent.
“I know this one!” said Aarjun
excitedly. “It’s arteries! Your
arteries carry oxygen-rich
blood to the rest of your body.”
“Arteries” said Artie writing it
in the crossword. “And look,
there’s a picture of a bench.”
“But the museum doesn’t have
a bench display” said Rochelle.
“Not a display!” said Artie.
“There are benches in the
main entrance. Let’s go.”
16
17
There were a lot of benches
in the entrance hall. Brooke and
Connor searched everywhere.
Then Artie saw the final note
under the oldest bench.
“This is the hardest riddle
of them all” said Connor.
“What should we be for
60 minutes a day?”
“Active!” shouted Rochelle.
“You need to be active for
60 minutes every day to help
keep your heart healthy!”
“Of course!” said Artie.
“And now we have all 4 words.”
He wrote ‘active’ on the crossword.
18
19
“Look!” said Aarjun. “If you read
down there’s the fifth word…
b, e, a, t. Beat! The secret word
is beat! Beat like a heart beat!”
“Hang on, what’s this under
the bench?” asked Rochelle.
She pulled out a small rusty
box with a big lock on it.
“Beat like ‘Artie Beat’”
said Connor laughing.
“The lock’s got letters on it instead
of numbers” said Connor. “I think
this is what we’ve been looking for!”
“But what do we do now?”
The friends all sat on the
bench and thought hard.
Artie quickly entered the
letters b, e, a, t – to spell
out the word ‘beat’.
The lock made a creaking
noise and then sprung open.
Artie carefully opened the box…
20
21
“Wow! The ruby heart!”
said Rochelle.
“That’s so beautiful”
said Brooke.
“Yes” said Connor.
“Everyone will want to
come and see this!”
“This is going to save the
museum” said Aarjun.
“Let’s go and tell the
museum manager the
good news!” said Artie.
22
23
“Thanks for saving the museum”
said the museum manager.
“You know so much about the
heart and how it works, you
solved all the riddles.”
“It’s all part of a day’s work for us”
said Artie. “Just look after your own
heart by doing at least 60 minutes
of activity a day, every day!”
24
“And don’t forget to eat
at least 5 portions of
fruit and veg a day!”
25
You don’t have to do all
your activity at once.
A message from
Artie and friends
Your heart is a very important part of
your body. To keep your heart healthy
you need to do at least 60 minutes of
activity and eat at least 5 portions of
fruit and veg a day.
You can do a few minutes
here and there – just add
it all up and make sure
it comes to at least
60 minutes over a day.
Eating well also helps to keep
your heart healthy. Try not to
each too many sugary and fatty
foods and make sure you eat at
least 5 portions of fruit and veg
a day. A portion is about the size
of the palm of your hand.
Five fun things
Try not to sit around
watching TV or gaming
too often. Stay active.
Anything that makes you feel all
warm and a bit out of breath counts
as physical activity and is good for
your heart. You can run, play games,
ride your bike or do ball sports like
football or catch.
26
Make sure you drink
enough too. Water is very
good for you and you
need to drink more when
you’re being active.
1
Think of 3 ways to be
active for 20 minutes.
Do them all today so you
know you’ve been active
for 60 minutes or more.

Ask your family if there
is a museum nearby.
If you ride your scooter
or bike there it can
count towards your
60 minutes.
Get your friends to
play football or
another ball sport.
Games are a brillia

way to be active.
