MEREDITH
Meredith can be spelled or misspelled in many ways. Following are some, but certainly
not all of the alternative spellings approximately in the order of the frequency of their occurrence:
Merideth, Meridith, Meredeth, Meredah, Meridah, Mereday, Meriday, Merriday, Meridy,
Merrideth, Merridith, Marridith, Merrydyth and Merrydeath.
The relationships between the various Merediths in 18th and early 19th century America is
far from clear. Many of these early families lived in Virginia and sorting them out is a work in
progress. The one thing that appears certain is that the Daniel Meredith from whom our Meredith
family descends was born in Virginia in 1792. 1
Daniel Meredith was the son of William and Nancy (Skaggs) Meredith of Russell County,
Virginia, and Green County, Kentucky. 2 William had signed a petition in 1795 for separating a
new county (Tazwell) from Russell, but by the time the new county was formally established the
Merediths no longer lived there. 3
William and Nancy (Skaggs) Meredith went to Kentucky about 1799 to join Joseph and
Nancy (Skaggs) Meredith who had preceded them there a few years earlier. 4 William's wife was
the aunt of Joseph's wife.5 William and Joseph are found together on 1787 through 1794 Russell
County, Virginia, tax lists.6 It is presumed, though not yet proved, that Joseph and William
Meredith were brothers. William Meredith disappeared from the Green County, Kentucky, tax
records by 1801. 7 It has not been possible to locate him or his wife beyond this date.
Daniel Meredith was referred to in the Green County, Kentucky, estate papers of one
Moses Skaggs, brother of Nancy (Skaggs) Meredith. Daniel with his brothers John, James,
Matthew/Matthias and William were heirs of the deceased Moses Skaggs. This came about
because at the time of the settlement of the estate of the childless Moses Skaggs in 1836, both
William and Nancy (Skaggs) Meredith were deceased. The estate papers note no place of
residence for the five Meredith brothers, only that they had removed from thatjurisdiction. 8
It was attested to that William and Nancy Meredith had the five sons when they left
Virginia about 1799.9 None of the five sons appears on the 1795 Russell County, Virginia, tax list
with William. 10 Beside William one male between 16 and 21 is found on the 1799 and 1800
Green County, Kentucky, tax lists. 11 Thus it would seem that the sons must have been under age
at the time of the move to Kentucky. In addition to the Moses Skaggs estate case, Daniel
Meredith was associated later with members of the Skaggs family. Besides the presence of Jacob
Skaggs, (brother of Nancy) and his sons James and Mastin in Weakley County, Tennessee, in the
late 1820's and early 1830's with Daniel Meredith, Mastin and James Skaggs are found later with
Daniel in Missouri. 12 Daniel named of his oldest son Mathias 13 (a somewhat unusual name)
perhaps to honor a deceased brother. These facts serve to reinforce that Daniel Meredith of this
study and Daniel Meredith of the Moses Skaggs estate case are one.
Family records indicate that Daniel Meredith married Margaret O'Neal in Logan County,
Kentucky, in 1817. 14 There were land purchases and sales in the northern part of Logan County on
the Gaspar River in 1814 and 1817 in which a William Meredith bought land and later sold it to a
1
11-2
Daniel Meredith. JS William Meredith Jr. and Daniel also appear on tax lists there in 1814 through
1817.J 6 These could have been the Daniel of this study and William who was possibly his brother.
There were members of a second Meredith family in Weakley County, Tennessee, at the
same time Daniel was there. 17 These were some of the children of David Meredith of Logan
County, Kentucky. JS David Meredith followed a different migratory route from Virginia than that
taken by Daniel, that is, by way of North Carolina rather than Kentucky. We know that David
came from Virginia because his oldest daughter, Nanc~ Meredith Edmonson/Edmiston, says in the
1850 Kentucky census that she was born in Virginia. 1 Two of David's younger children, Samuel
B. and David, Jr., indicate that they were born in North Carolina. 20 It is probable that there was a
relationship between the family of David Meredith and the Daniel Meredith of this study, but no
such relationship has been established.
The following of David Meredith's children went to Weakley County: Nancy Meredith
and her husband Archibald Edmonston, Lucretia Meredith and her husband Charles Bradshaw and
Samuel Meredith. 2 J On 25 January 1809 David Meredith's daughter Judith was married in
Christian County, Kentucky, to a James Meredith. 22 Could this have been the James Meredith,
brother of Daniel, mentioned in the Green County, Kentucky, estate case of Moses Skaggs?
As early as 1797 there is a tax record of a resident, Samuel Meridey/Meredith, living on
the same watercourse (Whippoorwill) as David Meredith in Logan County, Kentucky. 23 David's
24
son Samuel was born in approximately 1785 and would have been too young to have appeared
on a tax list in 1797. Therefore this Samuel was another adult Meredith in Logan County in the
late 1700's. His relationship to David Meredith, and almost surely there was one, is unknown.
Logan County tax records also indicate living on the Whippoorwill watercourse in 1807
were William and John Meredith. 25 As they were not the children of David Meredith, this opens
up the possibility that they could have been two of the Meredith brothers of the Moses Skaggs
estate case.
At least two of David Meredith's children, Samuel and David, Jr., eventually settled in
Greene County, Arkansas. 26 Also in Lawrence (later Greene County) were William, James and
John Meredith. 27 As these men were not the sons of David Meredith, it is a possibility that the
latter three were the brothers of the Daniel Meredith of the Greene County, Kentucky, estate case.
No record beyond his mention in the estate case was found for Matthew/Matthias Meredith so he
may have died before or shortly after reaching maturity.
An 1841 description of a road which ran from Tuscumbia (Miller County, Missouri) to
Forsythe notes that shortly after entering Kinderhook (Camden) County it ran past Samuel
Meridah's place. 28 This is the same place where our Daniel Meredith lived upon coming to
Missouri. 29 What was this Samuel's relationship to Daniel? He doesn't appear to have been the
Samuel Meredith, son of David of Logan County, Kentucky, as that Samuel was living in Greene
County, Arkansas, in 1840. 30 Was he the older Samuel Meredith who had been in Logan County
in the late 1790's? Is it possible that the name "Daniel" was misinterpreted as "Samuel," as this
did occur on another occasion, and no other record was found of anyone named Samuel Meredith
in the area?
2
11-3
A number of factors conspire to make researching the Meredith family difficult. The area
of western Tennessee which became Weakley County in 1823 had been Chickasaw Indian
territory. Margaret O'Neal, Daniel Meredith's wife, was purported to have had Indian ancestry,
31
whether Chickasaw or not, is unknown.
Records for the territorial period are virtually nonexistent and for early Weakley County sparse. After Daniel Meredith's move to Pulaski County,
Missouri, in 183232 the possibility for research in civil records does not improve. The area of
Pulaski County in which Daniel resided became Kinderhook (Camden) County in 1841. The
courthouse in Camden County burned in 1902 destroying the records and there are no Pulaski
County records before 1903.
Regarding Daniel Meredith, he is positively identified on an 1828 tax list for Weakley
County, Tennessee. 33 He was in Tennessee as early as 1818 as his daughter Mary indicates she
was born there in 1818.34
Daniel Meredith may have served in the War of 1812-1814 from Tennessee. There was a
Daniel Meredith in Pipkin's 1st Regiment of West Tennessee Militia. 35 As noted previously, and
according to a Meredith family Bible, Daniel was married to Mar9aret O'Neal 5 January 1817. 36
Purportedly the marriage took place in Logan County, Kentucky. 3 No church or civil record of
this marriage has been found. After Margaret's death 29 July 1852,38 Daniel married Elviara
(Elvira?), maiden name unknown, by whom he had a daughter. 39 Daniel Meredith died 10
40
December 1865 in Camden County, Missouri, and was probably buried on his home place.
Mathias Meredith, born 25 April 1820 in Weakley County, Tennessee, was the second
oldest of Daniel and Margaret's ten children. 41 Mathias married Surrilda/Sarilda Wiseman,
daughter of Benjamin Wiseman and Sarah \Vinfrey, 25 September 1842 in Miller County,
Missouri. 42 Surrilda was born 16 August 1824 and after her death 20 March 1863,43 Mathias
44
married twice more, but had no children from these unions. Mathias Meredith served in the 47th
45
Regiment of the Missouri Militia (Union) during the Civil War and died 10 August 1906. Both
he and Surrilda are buried in Glover Chapel Cemetery in Camden County, Missouri.
46
Like his parents, Mathias and Surrilda Meredith had a family of ten children.
Samuel
Meredith, their fourth child, was born 15 October 1849 in Camden County, Missouri. 47 Samuel
48
was married three times. His first wife was Rebecca Barnett with whom he had six children.
49
The name of his second wife is not known. His third marriage about 1898 was to the widowed
Emma (McCollum) Clubb, daughter of Stephen McCollum and Nancy E. Rice. 50 Emma was born
17 October 1873 in Chariton County, Missouri, and died 2 August 1924 at Crestline (Cherokee
County) Kansas.51 Samuel, who was a long time section foreman on the Frisco Railroad, died in
Coffeyville (Montgomery County), Kansas, 11 September 1940.s 2 Both are buried in Wirtonia
Cemetery at Crestline.
The younger of the two sons of Samuel Meredith's third marriage was Norman Vernon
Meredith, born 5 August 1904 in Poplar Bluff (Butler County), Missouri.s 3 On 10 Au~ust 1922
4
Norman was married in Galena (Cherokee County), Kansas, to Violet May McCleary.
Violet,
the daughter of John Howard McCleary and Jennie Allen, was born 12 August 1904 in Galena
(Cherokee County), Kansas. ss Norman and Violet Meredith' s marriage which produced one child,
Samuel Lee Meredith, s6 was dissolved by divorce 3 May 1946.s7 Subsequently Norman married
Catherine (Ice) Carruthers with whom he had a second farnily. 58 He died in Plumas County,
59
California, 10 April 197 6.
