can restock their shelves after a busy start to the holiday season. We appreciate the
donations.
For December, we are going to be supporting another local non-profit, the
Family Resource Center. We will be offering a 50/50 sale. For every $2,000 you
spend on flooring, Precision Flooring will donate $50 to the Family Resource
Center of Truckee and give you $50 off your purchase. At the Family Resource
Center of Truckee, their motto is “Building Community One Family at a Time”.
We believe that the group is a wonderful resource to our town. To learn more

We’re approaching
our longest night here
in the northern
hemisphere, but with
the solstice the
daylight hours begin to
lengthen again.
In a few weeks the skies will fill with the creatures who
journey as the seasons turn: the robins, wrens and most
distinctive of all, the v-shaped flocks of Canada geese with their
unique calls.
Each fall, Monarch
Butterflies make the
journey from Canada to
the southern States or
Mexico, a distance of
some 3,000 miles.
These journeys aren’t only for those with wings. Some
creatures travel great distances over land, mostly in response to
the presence or absence of food. The great Serengeti Migration
in Africa involves millions of wildebeest and their fellow travelers
in a circular trek over 1,800 miles long.
But the distance champion in the world of migrations remains
the Arctic tern, who travels almost pole to pole, Greenland to
Antarctica, for a round trip of 44,000 miles or 71,000 kilometers.
These little birds can live 30 years or more, so over the course
of its lifetime, an arctic tern will migrate around one and a half
million miles (almost two and a half million kilometers). That’s
about three trips to the moon and back again!
Answer to last month’s quiz: “Horse”
Congratulations to last month’s
winner: Amber Bohnet

Have you heard of the annual Ig-Nobel Awards? Modeled on the
Nobel Prizes, they are dedicated to the achievements that make
people laugh and then make them think. Here are some of the
winners:
Medicine - Alan Kligerman, inventor of Beano, for his work with
anti-flatulence liquids.
Chemistry - Ivette Bassa, for the invention of bright blue Jell-O.
Psychology - Shigeru Watanabe, Junko Sakamoto, and Masumi
Wakita of Keio University, for training pigeons to tell the difference
between the paintings of Monet and Picasso.
Art - Don Featherstone of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, for the
invention of the plastic pink flamingo.
Physics - Robert Matthews of England for studying Murphy's Law
and showing that toast does often fall on the buttered side.
Computer Science - Chris Niswander of Arizona for the software
PawSense, which detects a cat walking across your keyboard.
Physics - Andre Geim of the Netherlands and Michael Berry of
England, for the levitation of a frog.
Peace - Daisuke Inoue of Japan for the invention of karaoke.
Physics - Lianne Parkin, Sheila Williams, and Patricia Priest of New
Zealand for showing that people slip and fall less often on icy surfaces
if they wear socks outside their shoes
Probability -Bert Tolkamp, Marie Haskell, Fritha Langford, David
Roberts, and Colin Morgan, who found that the longer a cow has been
lying down, the more likely it will stand up, but that once it stands up,
you cannot readily predict when it will lie down again.
Arctic science -Eigil Reimers and Sindre Eftestøl for studying how
reindeer react to humans disguised as polar bears.
Literature -Mark Dingemanse, Francisco Torreira, and Nick J.
Enfield, for discovering that a word equivalent to "huh?" seems to
exist in every language, though they could not determine why.
The Ig-Nobel Awards are the brainchild of Marc Abrahams, editor
and co-founder of the magazine Annals of Improbable Research.
The awards are handed out by actual Nobel Prize winners.

Personalize Your Office Space
Client of the Month
Whether you work at home or away from home, having a work space
to call your own is vital to your well-being and productivity.
Though you might not need a
piano beside your desk for
inspiration, it is important to
personalize your work area
with items that have meaning
for you, whether they’re
photos, artwork or stuffed
animals. Plants have a
beneficial influence as well.
Studies have proven that sterile cubicle-offices have a detrimental
effect on productivity. So keep it clean and tidy, but don’t hold back on
the personal touches!
New Year’s Eve
Round the World
Noisemakers and fireworks, popping champagne and watching the
ball drop – New Year’s Eve is celebrated all sorts of ways. Here are
some different customs from around the planet:


In Stonehaven Scotland, paraders swing balls of fire on a rope
People break plates on their neighbors’ doorsteps in Denmark
In Turkey, people wear red underwear
Folks in Brazil serve lentils for luck
Romanian farmers try communicating with their animals
Celebrators in Venice have a mass kiss-in
In Spain, people eat twelve grapes at midnight, one with each
stroke of the clock, to bring luck in the coming year
Taking your empty suitcase for a walk in Ecuador guarantees
you a holiday in the coming year

LIFETIME INSTALLATION WARRANTY
Buying flooring is different than buying any other piece of interior
décor, such as a sofa or a lamp. Why? Because unlike other
products, flooring is installed or “manufactured” in your home. This
makes the installation critical. We offer a lifetime installation
warranty at Precision Flooring. You NEVER have to worry about
something going wrong with the installation. If it does, we’ll fix it
FREE! And we’ll do it quickly!
