Registration, refreshments and the Trade Show will be held in the Staff Common Room on the 5th floor. 9.00am: Coffee and Registration 9.30am: Welcome by the President: Mr Tim Fry 9.45am: ‘Ethics in dentistry’ - Dr Colin Campbell Oral Surgeon, The Campbell Clinic, Nottingham Colin is a GDC registered Specialist in Oral Surgery who qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1994. Colin has worked previously in oral and maxillofacial surgery units in Glasgow, Nottingham and Derby before entering practice as a vocational trainee and then becoming a vocational trainer. He secured one of the first waves of PDS oral surgery contracts in 1999 and has provided Primary Care Trust oral surgery for over 10 years. Colin became involved in implant dentistry as a clinician in 1998 and began lecturing in 2000. He was awarded Fellowship of the International Team for Implantology in 2006 and was the Communications Officer for the UK and Ireland Section sitting on the Leadership Team of the organisation from 2011 – 2014. Colin is the Clinical Director at The Campbell Clinic, which is a multi-disciplinary private specialist practice in Nottingham and also the Clinical Director of Refine Specialist Dental Care in Derbyshire, which provides NHS oral surgery and orthodontics along with private implants and orthodontics. www.campbell-clinic.co.uk 10.30am: ‘Periodontal Illumination, where a scaler and blade just will not do’ Dr Rana Al-Falaki (q BDS, Barts and The London, 1997) Specialist in Periodontics, Al-FaPerio Clinic; Member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry Rana has been on the UK specialist list in periodontics for over 10 years. She has worked in the hospital system helping with the undergraduate and post-graduate tuition, and as an associate specialist. Most of her time is now spent in specialist practice, as well as lecturing worldwide. She was the first UK periodontist to use lasers in her daily practice. She is conducting research on its applications and also lectures both in the UK and internationally on the subject and is pioneering its use in this field. She has published articles and presented research on the use of Er, Cr:YSGG lasers in both periodontology and peri-implantitis, is a visiting professor to the Medical University of Taipei, and a founding member of the Global Periodontal Laser User Society. Rana qualified from the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1997, with distinction. 11.15am: Coffee and Trade Show 11.45am: ‘Oral Medicine and Pathology: A Snapshot of 6 weeks in Zimbabwe’ Mr Corwin Hine 2013-14 Malcolm Jenkins and John Richards scholar 12.00pm: ‘Oral Cancer – Changing demographics’ - Dr Phil Atkin (q BDS, The London, 1977; MSc Experimental Oral Pathology, 1995) Consultant & Honorary Senior Lecturer in Oral Medicine, Cardiff Dental Hospital & School Dr Phil Atkin is consultant and honorary senior lecturer in oral medicine and lead for teaching in human diseases/clinical medical sciences at Cardiff dental hospital and school since 2004. He has a background in oral surgery and aspects of special care dentistry and examines for the Diploma in Special Care Dentistry (RCS Eng), as well as MFDS and FDS (Oral Medicine) examinations. He has been external BDS examiner in dental schools in the UK and overseas, and has recently returned to the East End as external examiner for BDS at The London. 2.15pm: ‘Amalgam – will we miss it when it’s gone?’ Dr John Good (q BDS, The London, 1990) Specialist in Prosthodontics, No. 8 Partnership John qualified from the Royal London in December 1990 then did a 2year Masters at Eastman in Fixed Prosthodontics from 1994-96. He worked as a Clinical Lecturer at Eastman part time from 1996 to 2005. Rest of time in general practice with other specialists doing a mix of general and specialist work. John is also a speaker and study club director for ITI (International Team for Implantology). 3.00pm: Tours of the new Dental School 4.00pm: Tea and Trade Show 4.30pm: Welcome by the Dean: Professor Mike Curtis 4.45pm: Presentation of the Slack Medal 5.00pm: Evelyn Sprawson Lecture: ‘The future of dental devices is digital’ Professor Richard van Noort Professor of Dental Materials Science, University of Sheffield 5.45pm: Drinks reception 7.00pm: Dinner SATURDAY, 28th February 2015 On Saturday, all events will take place in the Perrin Lecture Theatre, Blizard Building, Newark Street, E1 2AT. 9.45am: ‘Cleft Lip and Palate surgery – new horizons and busman’s holidays with Operation Smile’ - Mr Per Hall FRCS(Plast) Consultant Cleft Surgeon, Addenbrooke’s Hospital NHS Trust, Cambridge Mr Per Hall was appointed as a consultant plastic surgeon to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge in 1995. He has lead the development and of the East of England Cleft Lip and Palate service since its designation in 2002. Children born with Clefts in the UK follow a 20 year pathway of care delivered by a multidisciplinary team which he leads. Per is on the medical advisory board of Operation Smile UK and has been instrumental in the establishment of a training program for Ethiopian surgeons to learn Plastic Surgery with an emphasis in Cleft Lip and Palate, burns, trauma and cancer. 10.30am: ‘Murtuza’s crash course in orthodontics, is “fast orthodontics” really safe?’ Dr Murtuza Hasnaini (q BDS, Barts and The London, 1997) Specialist Orthodontist and Practice Principal, The Brace Orthodontic Practice I trained at Barts and The London and passed the Bachelor of Dental Surgery with distinction. After further training at the Royal London Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children I returned to the Royal London for three years of full-time specialist training in orthodontics. My special interests are orthodontics for adults and patients with advanced gum disease, the business of orthodontics, marketing and teaching. I regularly work with other specialists, such as periodontists (gum specialist) and implantologists, and this allows me to solve very complex problems. I am actively involved in teaching and training. 11.15am: Coffee 11.45am: ‘Peri-Implantitis, a ticking time-bomb’ - Dr Craig Kennett Dental Surgeon and Specialist in Periodontics, Rainham Dental Surgery Craig qualified in dentistry at Kings College, London in 1990. He worked in the hospital environment and in general dental practice whilst gaining his PhD, which he received at Kings in 1995.
