-- She rejected his proposal of marriage four times. Even so, the lady was
always his muse. Down by the Salley Gardens, for example, was inspired by Maud Gonne. In the poem, Yeats put
his lovesickness in rhyme and parallelism. 46 he was young and foolish, he couldn’t grasp the meaning of
what his lover bade him: take love easy. Instead of 47 with love patiently, he was impatient to possess her,
which led to a tearful ending. He realized that love could bring not only happiness, but sorrow and regret as well.

<D> Tornadoes come in many shapes and sizes, but most of them take on the 48 of a narrow funnel. They
usually do not last long. 49 , they may inflict considerable damage because they occur with little or no
warning and their paths are unpredictable. Tornadoes vary in intensity from F0 to F5 on the Fujita scale regardless
of shape and size. Sixty-two percent of tornadoes are weak (F0 to F1) with a maximum wind speed less than
about 50 mph and they cause only minor damage, while some are strong tornadoes with wind speed up to 300
mph. They bring not only death but also destruction. For instance, a strong tornado that struck the central U.S. in
May 1996 was reported to 50 at least 49 dead and 30,000 50 . Since tornadoes can be very destructive,
in order to understand tornadoes better, scientists have developed special vehicles and weather-monitoring
equipment that __51__ them to make close-up observations of these dangerous storms. Radar equipment is put on

<E> Whether there is life in outer space has always been a mystery and a fascinating question to many. A great
number of people reply to this in the affirmative. They believe aliens exist and 53 they visit the Earth
regularly. Believe it or not, people seem to have common knowledge about the aliens’ appearances. Roswell, a
town made famous for the Roswell incident, is __54__ the tales about aliens and flying saucers began. Rumor has
it that alien bodies had been discovered after a spaceship crashed on some farmland. Although the American
government denied it, many people believed its authenticity and assumed that the government tried to 55
things and conceal the truth from them.
Today, Roswell has become the Mecca for alien zealots, who gather together to share their enthusiasm. Why
do aliens continue to fascinate people? First, people question new technologies and are concerned about problems
on Earth. With the belief that there are more intelligent beings out there, they hope to be taught to lead a better life.
Second, many consider it a lucrative business. The stores and hotels, 56 , are making profit as the tourists
flock to this famous town to see the alien landing site. Responding to this alien phenomenon, we have, on the one
hand, the 57 who claim that this is all nothing but a myth. On the other hand, there are still those in quest of
the mysterious creature out in the universe.

She Walks in Beauty
By Lord Byron (1788-1824)
5
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling _______.
And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent !

<B> In the Hollywood film Twister (1996), a group of scientists chased tornados close enough to drop a
“Dorothy” device, which scattered sensors into the heart of twisters to measure their power. The film was loosely
based on a real, far less successful, science project.
But next month the biggest tornado-chasing project in history will go much farther than Twister. Dozens of
scientists will be armed with an array of instruments – radar mounted on trucks, lasers, unmanned flying drones,
mobile weather stations, weather balloons and much else. They will venture out across a broad swath of Tornado
Alley, the heart of the US where powerful tornados most often strike, and surround thunderstorms with their
instruments to find out how tornados form.
The basics are known. A clash of warm, humid air and cool air erupts into violent thunderstorms. If the
winds high up in the storm blow at different speeds or from different directions, they can send the storm spinning
like a whirling top, and a funnel of spinning air drops to the ground as a tornado.
The most powerful tornados come from thunderstorms called supercells, which also have the power to
unleash torrents of rain, huge hailstones and violent gusts of wind. But crucial questions remain – why do so few
6
supercells spawn tornados? And why do apparently similar storms produce weak or strong tornados? The
answers will help to improve tornado warnings and save lives.

<C> Crop circles first appeared in the fields of southern England in the mid-1970s. Early circles were quite
simple, and simply appeared, overnight, in fields of wheat, rape, oat, and barley. The crops are flattened, the
stalks bent but not broken. As the crop circle phenomenon gained popularity, formations have also been reported
in Australia, South Africa, China, Russia, and many other countries, frequently close to ancient religious sites.
Circle-makers consider their practice an art. However, they still do secret work in the dead of night, and they
never claim credit for specific formations they created. Some explained that is because doing so would drain the
mystery of crop circles. The art form isn't just about the pattern making. The myths, the folklore and the energy
that people give them are part of the art. John Lundberg, a graphic design artist, Web site creator, and
acknowledged circle-maker said “It is pushing boundaries, opening new doors, working outside of the established
mediums. It is the greatest art in the 20th century.”
Adamantly opposing the crop-circle-as-art-form position are the “croppies”—researchers of the supernatural
phenomenon. They are merely curious, open to the existence of supernatural activity and willing to consider the
possibility that at least some of the circles were created by extraterrestrial forces. The phenomenon has become its
own science: cereology. Cereologists are quite vocal in their criticism of the admitted artists, accusing them of
being liars and agents in government disinformation campaigns.
However, on the question of whether all such circles are human made, Lundberg is perched firmly on the
fence. “I don't care. I have an open mind. It would be great if people could view circles as an art form. But really,
to me, anyone can believe whatever they want to believe.”
Hillary Mayell for National Geographic News
August 2, 2002
64. What does perch firmly on the fence mean in this article?
(A) Lundberg speaks against neither the circle-makers nor cerelogists.
(B) Lundberg really has no idea about this issue.
(C) Lundberg actually stands for one of the statements.
(D) Lundberg thinks that everyone should express their own statement.
65. Which statement is TRUE according to the article?
(A) Circle-makers think that crop circles are the great art of aliens.
(B) Circle-makers create the circles during the daytime and made them known to the public.
(C) Circle-makers’ works are highly valued by John Lundberg.
(D) The crops in the circle are all broken and destroyed.
66. Which one is NOT the belief of cereologists?
(A) They believe that some circles were created for certain religious purposes.
(B) They are open to accept the phenomenon as supernatural.
(C) They think that circle-makers represent the government, which is unwilling to tell the truth.
(D) They are willing to accept that some circles are created by UFO.
