E Introduction
The superlative of a word is the form we use to compare three or more things and to pick out ONE thing as more ‘X’ than the others.
Generally, ‘THE’ comes before the superlative.
E.g.
Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It is also the most famous mountain in the world.
In Britain we have eight coins. The 1p coin is the smallest and it is also worth the least.
To form the superlative, we use the ending –est or the adverb most.
Rules
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Short adjectives with one syllable, just add –est. Some adjectives double the last letter before –est e.g. hot > hottest
Longer two-syllable adjectives which end in consonant + -y. Remove the –y and add i-est e.g. busy > busiest, pretty >
prettiest
Some other two-syllable adjectives can take either –est or most, like: .adjecives ending in –ly, -ow, -le, -er e.g. common>
most common or commonest You CANNOT use both i.e. most commonest
There are irregular forms of the superlative, e.g. best, worst, least, furthest or farthest
Adverbs which have the same form as adjectives can take –est to form their superlative e.g. hard > hardest, late> latest
