Bulletin תשרי–חשון October 2014 !חג שמח Hag Sameah! Simhat Torah Honorees 5775 see page 6 from the Rabbi Bows and Arrows RABBI NEIL ZUCKERMAN I n his book ReThinking Synagogues, Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman defines religion like this: “Religion is a moving theological target. Religious Jews are those who keep trying to hit it somewhere rather than give up Jewish archery altogether. Synagogues should at least hand out bows and arrows.” I love this image because it is a powerful metaphor with which to measure our spiritual lives. Implicit in the metaphor is that moving targets are difficult to hit, but as long as we are striving to hit the target, we are doing okay and can feel good about calling ourselves “religious Jews.” We do not expect perfection; if we do, then we are surely setting ourselves up for disappointment. But just as a failure to hit the bull’s-eye every time doesn’t mean we should give up on archery, missing the mark in our spiritual lives doesn’t mean we should give up on living Jewishly. It may seem odd to describe our spiritual intentions with the image of a weapon. However, the notion that our best efforts to live with integrity are like aiming arrows at a target is embedded in the language of our prayers. We hear it over and over again on Yom Kippur as we list our shortcomings in lines that begin 2 Park Avenue Synagogue Bulletin Al het sheh-hatanu. In our mahzor, our High Holiday prayer book, the phrase is translated “We have sinned,” but while the English word “sin” most likely comes from the Latin meaning “guilty, criminal,” the Hebrew word het comes from archery, and refers to “missing the mark.” In the activities of our daily lives, as in our spiritual and ritual lives, we do not always hit the bull'seye. We acknowledge that we've fallen short, ask for forgiveness, realign our sights, and try again. There is also an important statement in the last sentence of Rabbi Hoffman’s definition of religion, and that is the critical role synagogues play. It is our job, at least, to hand out the bows and arrows so Jews can strive to hit the targets. While I have been at PAS for four years as Director of Congregational Education, the move to the pulpit is very exciting for me. In the weeks and months ahead, I look forward to meeting many more members of the Park Avenue Synagogue community and discussing with you how we can better equip you as archers! In this holiday season, I wish you all a Shanah Tovah, a happy and healthy New Year, one in which you have opportunities to aim again for your most cherished goals. May we all be blessed with health, happiness, and peace in the coming year. Do not separate yourself from the community. Charles Yellen is uncomfortable calling attention to himself, but he is always ready to step forward to call attention to the good work of Park Avenue Synagogue and especially, the Men’s Club. Whether it is in worship, service to the community, or simply showing up for events, Charles embodies the charge in Pirkei Avot, attributed to the sage Hillel: Do not separate yourself from the community. Charles celebrated becoming a bar mitzvah in a Conservative synagogue, but his family didn’t participate in that community, and as a teen and young adult, Charles walked away from Judaism. After college, he went on a UJA mission to Israel and came home ready to reengage. When he met his wife, Jodi Krieger, she suggested that they include Kabbalat Shabbat services in their Friday evening dates. They attended Brotherhood Synagogue in Gramercy Park, became members, and attended services regularly. Charles and Jodi were married at PAS by their rabbi from Brotherhood Synagogue, Rabbi Lincoln and Cantor Lefkowitz. By the time their first child, Phillip, was born, they lived on the Upper East Side. When it became clear that they needed a synagogue closer to home, Jodi and Charles looked at the many synagogues on the Upper East Side. They decided to join PAS. The services were familiar and the community just drew Charles in; he felt embraced by the people. Phillip attended the ECC; his brother, Jonathan, was born while he was in the Green Room. Both boys spent three years in the ECC, attended the Congregational School, and are regular participants in various aspects of the high school programming and community service events at PAS. Among the activities in which they participate, Phillip reads Torah several times during the year and blows shofar for the High Holidays; Jonathan has become a regular participant at the Food Pantry. It is truly a second home for the Yellen family, a safe and comfortable place. There is a member of the Yellen family at PAS almost every Shabbat and on many days during the week. They have made lifelong friendships and know that at PAS they will always have support during tough times and celebration during good times. Charles is the immediate past president of Men’s Club and served as co-president in prior years. In addition to the time he volunteers at PAS, Charles has coached sports teams for West Side Soccer League and for Yorkville Youth Athletic Association. He has been a mentor to at-risk inner city youth, including teenagers, working through the I Have a Dream Foundation. Charles is proud to engage with young children and teens, and when young people see him on the street and call out, “Hi, Coach!” you can see a big smile on his face and a light in his eyes. It reinforces his sense that although he lives in a large city, he is really part of a small community. Charles loves the combination of tradition and innovation at Park Avenue Synagogue. In this season of reflection and renewal, he sees the synagogue as an institution being evaluative and striving to become better. He hopes the synagogue will always do these things, while continuing to embrace and engage more people of all ages in Jewish education, values, and culture. Park Avenue Synagogue congratulates Charles Yellen and wishes him many more years of feeling embraced by the communities to which he contributes his devotion and energy. Simhat Torah Morning – Honoring Our Members Friday | October 17 | 9:15 am | Festival Morning Service For their significant contributions to the life of our synagogue and to the community, we honor Charles Yellen with the last reading from the Torah (Hatan Torah) and Barbara Weinstein with the first reading from the Torah (Kallat B’reishit). 6 Park Avenue Synagogue Bulletin Simhat Torah Honoree 5775 PAS Salutes Barbara Weinstein, Kallat B’reishit M in ha-ma·amakim karatikha, Adonai. Adonai shim’a v’koli, t’hiyena oznekha kashuvot l’kol tahanunai. Out of the depths I call to you, Adonai. Adonai, hear my voice, may your ears be attentive to my pleas. The opening verses of Psalm 130 might be a theme song for our Kallat B’reishit, Dr. Barbara Weinstein. Barbara has called to God in times of personal loss and joy. Over years of coming to services, learning and yet more learning, she has made herself at home in the Jewish tradition while making herself a home at Park Avenue Synagogue. She has come to an understanding of what it means for God to hear her voice. At the same time, as a professor of audiology, Barbara is passionate about enabling people to hear and be attentive to each other. When Barbara was growing up, her brother went to Hebrew School and had a Bar Mitzvah, but she and her twin sister received no formal Jewish education. They learned traditions at home and how to cook “Jewishly” from their grandmother. When Barbara’s grandfather died, the rabbi at their synagogue was new and did not take the time to get to know their family, although her parents were active at their shul. The rabbi who hadn’t known her grandfather officiated at his funeral. Barbara felt the service did not do right by a wonderful and accomplished man, and she resolved that as an adult, she would be part of a congregation and would have a rabbi who knew her. By the time Barbara had married Lou Bernstein, her parents were living on the Upper East Side and had joined Park Avenue Synagogue. Although Barbara and Lou lived downtown, they joined PAS in order to be with her parents on the holidays. The family was struck by several tragedies and losses, and each time, Rabbi Lincoln and Susan were present for them, until Barbara was the last of the five members of her than nuclear family standing. “I wanted a rabbi who knew me,” Barbara said, “but reflecting back, I wish he wouldn’t have gotten to know me so well.” under the watchful eyes of Rabbi Lincoln, went to the ECC and the Congregational School, and celebrated their Bnei Mitzvah at PAS. Barbara is especially proud that she read from the Torah at her daughter’s Bat Mitzvah, teaching herself with the help of Cantor Nancy Abramson, who supported her learning style, until she mastered her portion of the parashah. Since then, wanting to know more about Torah and Jewish tradition, Barbara has completed the core Melton course and has taken grad courses. Two and a half years ago, she joined the Adult Bat Mitzvah class at PAS and celebrated her own Bat Mitzvah on Shavuot. The class honored her by asking her to give the dvar Torah. When she delivered it, Barbara shared her journey about being in a relationship with God, bravely and passionately sharing the realization she came to after a long time: You can’t ask why bad things happen because there is no answer. “That frees you up,” she commented. At the same time as she is working professionally, studying, and coming to terms with God, Barbara gives her time to Park Avenue Synagogue in many ways, from securing a grant for the Food Pantry to working with Darcy Dalton on a “Night of Shabbat Dinners,” when congregants shared Friday evening dinners in each other’s homes. She led the planning for Cantor Nancy Abramson’s farewell concert, and she has served on the Shabbaton committee for many years. “Once you’re engaged in the synagogue community,” Barbara says, “you don’t want to miss anything or anyone with whom you have bonded.” Barbara wants people to know that behind the formal façade of Park Avenue Synagogue there is a friendly, welcoming community that embraces everyone who enters. At the same time, she advocates for the synagogue to become even more welcoming and accessible by making accommodations for people who are hard-of-hearing, have limited mobility, or any disability which prevents them from experiencing the voices of our clergy and distinguished speakers on the bimah. Park Avenue Synagogue congratulates Barbara Weinstein and wishes her many more years of learning and active involvement in our community. The photos are the product of a unique workshop, a joint project of JDC-Eshel, the Israel Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services and UJA-Federation of New York. Through the project, which operates throughout Israel, participants express their personal stories, memories and feelings. Through December JDC-Eshel, the Association for Planning and Development of Services for the Aged in Israel, works to ensure adequate housing, social and health services to seniors, regardless of their ability to pay, and has been the foremost organization in Israel working for the welfare of the elderly since 1969. www.pasyn.org 212–369–2600 October 2014 Tishrei/Heshvan 5775 13 Youth Education & Events For details, please refer to the Fall Program Catalog or pasyn.org Congregational School Schedule For the schedule of youth programs and worship on Yom Kippur, please see the PAS website.
